I will be more specific. Name a hardware company that sells more laptops, desktops, mobile phones, personal media players, tablets, routers, and TV accessories. The pippin was a failure, by any measure, but that was years ago. Apple is a significantly different company now.

Do companies beat apples sales in one or two of those areas? Totally. Combined? Not even close. We are getting off on a tangent, however. This thread is to discuss the implications of such a partnership.
Does intel or AMD count? cause unless apple has it's own factory making it's own individual parts for their macbooks I'm pretty sure theres one of em in their computers.
I was under the impression that apple just cobbled a couple of pieces together and slapped their logo on it while installing their own (very simplified) OS onto the thing.

Besides, sales isn't that big a deal if the products they make suck >.> you can probably tell by now that there's a lot of hate for apple, I'm willing to bet it's because of it's bad hardware and incompatible software throughout the years.

Such a partnership would be rocky to say the least though that could be different now with Steve Jobs gone. Steve was a ridiculously secretive boss, so he could've just had everything under wraps, not informing valve of any progress until the reveal... only to have it too sucky and underpowered for their games...

It makes a certain kind of sense, the Portal turrets DO kind of look like Apple products, although I've had one shooting at me for at least 10 minutes and I'm pretty sure I've never used an Apple device that could hold a charge that long.
I lol'd at this. Thank you.

Steam's core audience is completely different from Apple's core audience.
I don't know - Valve has made a point of targeting the entire universe of late, as does Apple. Their core audience may be dissimilar, but both companies are definitely gunning for world domination of some sort.

God what is it with the stupid rumours surrounding Valve of late?
It's probably just Gabe trolling us again.

I personally think it's more to do with people hating hipsters, and everyone who owns an Apple product is supposedly a hipster.

First of all...
Apple doesn't even come close to the top. GE is the closest you get to a winner in that area. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Secondly
Please tell me where you get this from.
"It is worth 100 billion dollars more than Microsoft and Google *combined*."
I call bullshit. Back it up or drop it.
Especially since the best sources I can find the respectively go for:
Microsoft 69.943 Bil $

Apple Inc. 108.249 Bil $

Most of apples income comes from software. Not hardware.

Doesn't fucking matter that they are successful at making consumer electronics when they are not a successful gaming related platform. It is different businesses. You might as well say Nokia. It isn't their area of expertise.
GE does much more than consumer electronics. They build everything from light bulbs to aircraft carriers. Apples and oranges.

Valuation of a company is based on share price multiplied by the number of outstanding shares. Thus:
http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/aapl?source=search_general&s=aapl $564 billion.
http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/msft?source=search_general&s=msft $258 billion.
http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/goog?source=search_general&s=goog $203 billion.

258+203=461 < 564.

And anyone who has looked at one of Apples earnings reports can see that the OVERWHELMING majority of its revenue and profit come from hardware. iTunes and the App Store run at near break even margins.

Also, Nokia hasn't been on top of the smartphone space for a while. The race is between Apple and Samsung (Both great companies!)

I think the problem with this is that he simply forgot a comma. Took this from Wikipedia:

''It is the largest publicly traded company in the world by market capitalization, overtopping ExxonMobil by some $150 billion, as well as the largest technology company in the world by revenue and profit, more than Google and Microsoft combined.''

Oh, lord above, no.

Apple's track record with consoles and gaming is abysmal. If (big IF here) this is about that whole SteamBox/Steamcast/Apple Valve Red Delicious, than if Newell and Cook decide to work together on such project (unlikely), the whole Red Delicious console will likely go to shit.

Though, like I said, it's double unlikely that will happen. And thank God/Vishnu/The Flying Spaghetti Monster that it's double unlikely.

captcha: hobby-horse. Yeah, that's right, captcha! Apple IS a hobby-horse!

Remember how you can get steam on a mac?

This has nothing to do with hardware. Valve isn't even making this bloody steambox you people keep talking about.

I hope not.

I do not care for apple. Their methods, Their products or their main consumer base. But hey lets see what happens.

Btw apple isn't the most successful hardware maker on the planet, and is indeed VERY unsuccessful when it comes to making gaming related hardware (apple pipin anyone? didn't think so).
I think I read about that on the 100 biggest technological fails list. ( it was named something like that I can't find it on google right now).

I second this. Mac has something like a 15% market share in the US and it keeps on growing, so it makes sense that Valve would want to get in on that.

O' lawd. I sincerely hope it either doesn't happen, or Valve milks Apple purely for their technical expertise (See: Immoral efficiency).
I absolutely despise Apple and everything they stand for in terms of user experience and marketing, whereas Valve is a stand-out awesome company that seems particularly opposite Apple on the spectrum. Basically I don't want Apple to be able to apply their sneaky underhand ways to Steam.

Captcha: "Happy anniversary"
Captcha seems to like it though...

Valve needs hardware help from Apple "the most successful hardware maker on the planet"? Makes sense, their latest 8-core iProc is probably the best CPU around and the 2TB 18000RPM iHard is probably the fastest non-SSD HDD, although the iForce 6GT could be better for the price and they never update the drivers.

Uhm.. was this not already put to rest by valve. They do NOT want to enter the hardware market. Much like the ME3 ending, people read something online and draw their own conclusions, assume they are fact and then start plugging their ears when anyone says anything points out how they are incorrect. Valve fans love Steam to a point that their wishful thinking went into overdrive and because Valve made a showcase system, people assumed it was the birth of the steambox.

So even though valve refuted that notion and said that they had no ambition to enter hardware, we still have people dreaming up conclusions to make the steam box a reality?

That is a big jump. They have business dealings with a lot of games being converted to run the MacOSX. But, that is about it. The thing is, the business models are completely different. Apple is closed format, controlling every little aspect of everything involved in the Apple business model. Steam is more open the way it does things.

I know that Steam is potentially looking to break into the hardware business, but Apple has zero experience in gaming consoles. I just don't see it the way the OP does. I also wouldn't want them teaming up since Apple is the bigger company and I don't care for them.
