That is a big jump. They have business dealings with a lot of games being converted to run the MacOSX. But, that is about it. The thing is, the business models are completely different. Apple is closed format, controlling every little aspect of everything involved in the Apple business model. Steam is more open the way it does things.

I know that Steam is potentially looking to break into the hardware business, but Apple has zero experience in gaming consoles. I just don't see it the way the OP does. I also wouldn't want them teaming up since Apple is the bigger company and I don't care for them.
Apple actually does have experience with consoles.

One they would like the world to forget.

THE APPLE BANDAI PIPPIN!

And it was shit.

So we can only hope for the best for The Apple Valve Red Delicious.

And yes, I loathe any partnership between Apple and Valve as much as you.

Apple is successful, that doesn't mean it's the best stuff though. It's really just a popularity thing; a grossly expensive substandard popularity thing.

Wishful scenarios from what is going on, and what will happen:

1.) This is an awesome and genius plot by Valve to destroy Apple and remove it from the market.

2.) Valve and Apple come together to make a new gaming console, but it results in a major financial disaster, and somehow destroys Apple to the point of dissolving and never returning, and by some miracle, Valve survives and returns to its former glory within a couple or three years.

3.)Just plain: Something happens and Apple dies a horrible death.

well here's something to think about :

in the opinions of more than a few analysts the next big thing expected from apple is the "iTV". why ? because there's a fundamental problem with their core product being a handheld device and that is that battery technology doesn't keep place with moores law. in other words they can't keep just bringing out ever better handheld devices because the battery tech won't keep up with their ambitions. so what's the alternative ? something that doesn't need batteries and that's a consumer device for the home.

on top of that apple make a massive percentage of its money from its content delivery and has a massive amount of deals to distribute other people's work and make money from it. :p

hence the "iTV". internet connected. probably touch screen. apps and media content and...

well there's a thought...

because if the next thing is an "iTV" its basically a computer with net access running something akin to apples version of Windows Media Center Edition and running "apps" as well...and if it can do all that...why not "real" games ?..
I thought Apple already ventured into this territory and failed horribly, with the Apple TV(that box thing that was suppose to be the iTunes equivalent with movies and TV shows, to hook into your TV and computer.

Well, whatever Apple is up to, I hope they fail. For all the crap devices they release, I just wonder how they are still around. Well I already know that, its on the backs of people that like to buy the latest hoity toity gadgets so they can say, "Hey look at me! I bought the latest incredibly expensive thing, because that is what eeeevvveeerrrrybody that's anybody is doing!"

The people that actually buy the stuff and actually think that it is set up and works properly and is better than anything out there, are few and far between, though I still think those people are delusional and have been sipping too much "Apple" flavored Kool-Aid.

So, the company with the largest fanatic following teams up with another company that is known for also having a large, religious following.

This'll be fun to watch. From a distance.

That Apple has the most cellphones sold this year doesn't = most cellphones out there are Iphones.
According to this they sold the most smart phones, but nokia and samsung still beat them in cell phones. My assumption is that they combined smart phones and cell phones as one category, which is likely the case. So Apple still loses to Nokia and Samsung. I think he's trying to split the two categories, and showing the one that proves his point while ignoring others.

I really, REALLY hope not. Valve is without a doubt one of my favourite companies, if not THE favourite. I hate apple products. To me, Valve and Apple are from completely different worlds, dimensions, universes. Come on Gabe, don't F up now. You're one of our only hopes in this dark, cruel world that we call Gaming.

A wonderful entertainment company partnering up with a company that makes EA look like a wimp in terms of how evil their practices are? No thanks.
I despise Apple.

If anyone really thinks Valve is "teaming up" with Apple to make a console, I have a bridge for sale. I'll even throw in a monorail at no extra charge.

Apple is a large hardware company. Valve is a large software company. That they talk to each other frequently isn't even news. It's an absolute given.

Valve working with Apple?

I'm just gonna brace myself for the oncoming shitstorm.
Who's that in the GIF? Tom Cruise?

OT: I don't like Apple, though I love Valve, so whatever is coming out of this will probably be extremely mediocre IMO.
Though maybe they were just discussing how they could integrate the Steam name with App Store or something.

Is there room for more people in your bunker?
I hardly think that there will be a partnership, perhaps beyond Valve software on IOS. And that would be a good thing.
If they were doing something bigger though? Well, it depends on what they are planning, but I believe it will be good.

Uhm.. was this not already put to rest by valve. They do NOT want to enter the hardware market. Much like the ME3 ending, people read something online and draw their own conclusions, assume they are fact and then start plugging their ears when anyone says anything points out how they are incorrect. Valve fans love Steam to a point that their wishful thinking went into overdrive and because Valve made a showcase system, people assumed it was the birth of the steambox.

So even though valve refuted that notion and said that they had no ambition to enter hardware, we still have people dreaming up conclusions to make the steam box a reality?
They put to rest the idea that they were going to make a PC/console. Which, for some people, is where it ended. And, for others, is where they started making stuff up to reaffirm their assumptions.

The truth is, Valve is working on hardware concepts. Just not a "console".

Last year they applied for two hardware patents. One was a modular game-pad design [seen here - http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20110105231#b] and the other was for a new input/output system to make use of bio-feedback technology [seen here - http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20110009193].

Also, fairly recently, an engineer at Valve by the name of Michael Abrash revealed that he is currently analyzing the viability of, and researching the possibilities and capabilities of, wearable computers. Like something you'd see in a bit of science fiction; or more realistically, like what IBM had been doing in the early 2000's and Google is now doing with the Google Glasses.

Here's the letter/job posting Mr. Abrash posted - http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/abrash/valve-how-i-got-here-what-its-like-and-what-im-doing-2/

Apple doesn't really make any hardware, they have partnerships with actual manufacturers and borrow their hardware for the Mac series.
Exactly, while Apple may design their devices and even a specialised component or three that goes in them, most of the manufacturing in done in huge Chinese industrial parks.

As for current Mac hardware... zero proprietary tech in them.

Valve teaming up with Apple for hardware support makes little sense.
Any meetings are most likely to be about Valve wanting to get Steam up on every iPlatform they can.

I do not care for apple. Their methods, Their products or their main consumer base. But hey lets see what happens.

Btw apple isn't the most successful hardware maker on the planet, and is indeed VERY unsuccessful when it comes to making gaming related hardware (apple pipin anyone? didn't think so).
Well first of all.
Hardware means more or less everything, so trying to compare is stupid as hell. Are you comparing Apple to GE or only specific products? What about Phillips who make monitors, but also makes shavers. I want to know what statistics you a using to compare this?

What I pointed out was that they are very unsuccessful at the specific type of hardware you are suggesting they are about to make.
No, you changed what you said from "Apple isn't the most successful hardware maker on the planet" to "they are very unsuccessful at the specific type of hardware you are suggesting they are about to make."

Which of course isn't exactly true seeing as most what Apple offers for mobile gaming blows the pants off the competition.

Speaking of statistics, where are yours?
