Because the reaction is instinctual, the nature of man must be good. And as for the lioness argument, our opinion could never dictate what evil really is. The lioness is simply a creature of nature, she is programmed to hunt and mate and eat. Her real nature is nuetral if you think about it. As for humanity, I believe our nature ultimatly is good but stupid. there is an old saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.I believe that applies much to your question.I'll even go as far as to say, that if you think long and hard about it, evil is a by product of stupid lol.
Point well made.asteroth21nox said:True, the instincts are of nature and thus nuetral as most forces of nature but by virtue of the nature of his instincts to save the child, dosen't that make him good? You could argue the lion's instincts are evil because it tells the lioness to kill but it's for it's own survival because it eats what it kills. The man saves the baby without regard of consiquence. Now that I think about it, maybe it's because of instinct man is good but because of his intelligence, because of opinion, evil exsists.
That, really. 'Evil' is a fairly loose term, I'd say selfishness/greed combined with stupidity is the cause of human suffering.Radeonx said:Less stupid, more ignorant. And less evil, more selfish. That's how I see it, anyways.
I'm actually Canadian so your left is pretty moderate to me. I suppose you could call me "left of the left." Anyways, I don't know much about the American Green Party so let's take a look at their website [http://www.gp.org/index.php]! First thing I see is "Greens to attend 'Medicare: Made In America' rally on July 30, call for Single-Payer and an end to the insurance industry's 'death grip' on health care" so that's a good start, the USA has a horrid health care system. But I guess what I really want is their Platform Page which is from 2004, but it's the most recent I can find. I can't read the entire thing so I just read the 10 Key Values [http://www.gp.org/platform/2004/intro.html#998247] they hold. And I tell ya, they seem pretty solid to me. If someone in the American Green Party has done something remotely comparable to my favourite [http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907150016] nutcase [http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200904220010] Glenn [http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200905120037] Beck [http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200903170029], I'd be glad to hear it. Or tell me the specific crazy parts of their agenda, since I couldn't read the entire thing.Knonsense said:It sounds like you are simply too close to the left to see any of the crazy people on the left. Is it possible that you're left of them? Do you think that the American Green party is reasonable, for example?Ahhpple said:There is really no equivalence between the left and the right. There is no liberal version of Glenn Beck, for example. The left has nowhere near the amount of dishonesty, hatred, and factual errors the right has. This type of thinking--"well the far right is crazy so there must be someone just as crazy on the left!!!"--ends up going nowhere and is the laziest way to take a political stance. This Southpark style argument that the insanity is split equally between both aisles is crap and basically what I'm trying to say is pick a side and stick with it.
edit: this is offtopic though so ignore me
I suppose that their desire for what they call equal distribution of resources sends some red flags up in my mind, but it doesn't sound like you would have a problem with that. I also don't like government control and rationing of health care.Ahhpple said:I'm actually Canadian so your left is pretty moderate to me. I suppose you could call me "left of the left." Even if you don't think that's crazy, I think that most people would.http://www.greenparty.org/Platform.php said:Maximum Income: Build into the progressive income tax a 100% tax on all income over ten times the minimum wage.

You want to combat evil? Seek knowledge and the training to interpret it without following it blindly. In other words, an education, ideally a critical-thinking focused one that doesn't teach you to just parrot answers.
The fight against evil starts and ends with every individual's capacity to reason.
