Aww man, and I was gonna come into here and say, "You call it pessimism, I call it realism." Way to cut my legs out from under me; in the first sentence of the post no less. :p

Anyway:

The 3 states of the human condition:

1-Cynic, A person who has an accurate view of the world.
2-Optimist, a Cynic in the making.
3-Pessimist, A Cynic with a vivid memory
I shall have to remember that and use it where applicable, for it is too awesome to do otherwise.

Realistic pessimist mostly. Things generally aren't as bad as I imagine, but it never hurts to assume the worst.
It's funny how it's usually pessimists that call themselves realists, it's hardly ever an optimist that does so.

Me? I'm an optimist, raised by life itself.

I'm usually pessimistic, but occasionally I'll get a dose of optimism, I guess realist might be closer but it changes a lot depending on the situation.

I, like most people, am a realist.

ZeroMachine: "Prepare for the worst, so when the best comes you're pleasantly surprised" is a pessimistic attitude.

Monkfish: "I hope for the best, but prepare for the worst" makes you an optimist.

Sadly, this is an area that is often misinterpreted. There are only 4 attitudinal states, and they are mutally exclusive. That said, a person is never one or the other all of the time. They fluctuate from position to position depending on a whole range of factors. Just because you're realistic currently, doesn't mean you're not going to be cynical tomorrow.

I don't really care what happens in the future. If it's good alright if it's bad tough luck.

Optimist: The glass is half full.
Pessimist: The glass is half empty.
Physicist: The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

I never said I was a realist, just a realistic pessimist, I only presume likely terrible things to happen.

I'm optimistic in the fact that things are always going to suck, and will get noticeably worse at the exact worst instant.
Oh,...do you need a hug? Come here, I will give you a big one. I promise I wont strangle you.

As far as I know, A pessimist is what a optimist calls a realist. Well, and other names I dare not speak. I'm a Pragmatic.
