Actually, I've already played, and quit, and reactivated, and quit again. So, maybe you'll like it, but I couldn't stick with it.

I don't usually buy based on reviews, because I tend to know what I'm going to want when it's announced. Some exceptions exist; the current Prince of Persia is one of them.

Huh? What did it do?
He made it more popular. And obviously people ruin everything *rolls eyes*
Um, I believe I just mentioned, what it did was to flood these message boards with his idiotic fanboys, who endlessly parrot his views as a substitute for having their own.

No - I find his videos amusing, but his views are often incredibly distorted, and he focuses on his own opinion (they are really just rants) way to much for them to be considered fair reviews.
Exactly this. The man's funny, I don't deny it, but he's funny because he rants. If he was a fair and unbiased reviewer, analyzing every different piece and aspect of a game, he wouldn't be the same. So, he focuses on the bad points, maybe embellishes them a bit, throws in some swearing, and et voila! , a Zero Punctuation.
What the hell is a fair and unbiased review? As the man himself has said, a review is a subjective opinion. There's no EPICAC we could feed a game disc into and get a fair and unbiased opinion.

His reviewing process is something like this I'd imagine.

1) pick game based on supposed fun, interest, shittiness or bile it will generate
2) Play game
3) Write a review pointing out it's bad bits overtly, exagerrating them, unless game is actually worth your time, in which, point out how great valve is and how much money you should give them for making games that don't suck.
4) make a ZP episode
5) watch the fanboys froth at the mouth.

Okay, so he doesn't just love games by Valve, but they're pretty much the only game developers that will release a game that matches his incredibly high standards nowadays. Of course, maybe he has lower standards and just enjoys making fanboys angry, and seeing people bicker about his reviews on the forums, but who knows?

no, but mainly because I don't play the types of games that he usually reviews. although, I did get Age of Conan after watching his review, and I understand a lot of his rant now, and cancelled my sub after the first month.

let the weak cling to something?

But in regards to the thread, yeah, i take into account what his reviews say, he doesnt just make up problems, even though he might exaggerate them a shitload. when i go to buy a game though, i look at about 5 reviews or so, maybe the xplay review, an online one, yahtzees etc.

One of the first lines in his recent Sonic review explained the following:

. That he was LOOKING for a game he knew he would dislike
. That he wanted to dislike it
. That he would never give it a chance

If you honestly believe hes a good reviewer then by all means beleive that - but its kind of obvious its entertainment only.

Now thats an intelligent reply. I agree with that, he does exaggerate, but the flaws are there to begin with, he just highlights them, which makes me think he does a good review. The only difference being is that his is a vocal review, one to be entertaining. Most reviews are typed, or in magazines and you can't really portray frustration in a written review. I think Yahtzee just uses what he has to get his point across.

City of Heroes was a bit of a dissapointment for me. Sure you've got all this weird and wacky stuff going on, but the general pace of combat was so slow! It was almost Runescape-esque.

I wouldn't call it a good game, and after having watched gamedamage myself, I think the only actual amusement yahtzee got out of it was just the general madness of the other players around him.

I don't mind Yahtzee. (read: I think Yahtzee's in the top five of the coolest things on the internet) In fact, I agree with him even when he's ripping something apart. He doesn't like fighting games. I really like them. And it's a perfectly fine reason, as with why he doesn't like JRPGs. Which actually seperates him from 99% of the gaming community that will throw the word suck around and use retro-fanboyism, console-fanboyism, and graphics whoring as their excuse to do so.

But he makes entertaining cartoons so automatically he's a celebrity. And celebrities have iconoclasts and antifans.

By going by most of his reviews, that's looking at any game that isn't Condemned, Silent Hill 2, Prince of Persia, or the Half Life series. When he reviews games that everyone already knows is shit, it's entertainment. When he doesn't, it's a review. You may have to stop and think about the negative things he says, but it's a review nonetheless.

He hasn't influenced me that much; I already owned Psychonauts, and was planning on getting The Orange Box.

However, thanks to him, I completely avoided Assassin's Creed.

To be fair though, i started playing the Final Fantasy series at number 7, and it was awesome, 8 was ok, nine didnt interest me, 10 was cool cause it was the first one on ps2 ( i think) and thats about it as far as JPRG's go for me. I really don't know any others other than the FF series. True what you said though, if someone slates something that someone loves they will use the same come backs over and over til it's boring and predictable, and use it some more.

Reviews can be more or less objective. "It's stupid and it's boring" is entirely subjective, "The game is bad because it has a bad story" is a little less subjective, and "The game has extremely repetitive level design and brain dead AI" is objective enough to debate rationally. While understanding the distinction requires perhaps too much intellectualism to expect to see on internet message boards, it is there.

When Yahtzee reviews Eve Online, a game which is designed around player interaction and long-term commitment, and starts out by rejecting out of hand playing with other people or investing any real time into it, he has clearly gone into horribly subjective territory. His reviews are overly myopic and closed-minded (Honestly, The Witcher wasn't even remotely difficult to learn how to play. Somebody obviously wasn't even trying).

I don't even like fighting games, mostly because of the button mashing, but even I found his Soul Calibur review to be nothing but pure trolling.

City of Heroes was probley my faviourite MMO before I decided to quit them forever. Though to be honest, thinking back on it, I think I liked it for all the wrong reasons

-The awesome character creation (Spore has awesome character creation, doesn't make it a good game)

-The fact it was set in a comic book world

Thats it. The game itself is very slow paced. Gameplay only picks up once you get yourself a travel power (flight, teleportation ect) and thats a few days of leveling into the game (lvl 14 I think) Theres also a hell lot of balancing issues with PvP, which was added with City of Villains (a stand alone game and expansion pack). Basically, the Villain classes are either stupidly over powered in PvP or just useless. Also, from what I've heard (I never got there myself), end game doesn't offer that much to do, unlike in WoW where all the decent stuff is for elites only.

But, the CC does mean you see some pretty colorful characters around the place, and the RP community is one of the best, if your into that sort of thing, mostly because the City of Heroes universe allows them to create both serious and ridiculous characters and storys without fear of the breaking the lore. But honestly, if you like comic books, the feeling of just being the super hero (or villain) you've always wanted to be might be enough. Is it worth a monthly subscription?...probley not, unless you've got the money to splash out.

It was certainly a fun enough game that I've been keeping one secret eye on Cryptics next comic book MMO, Champions Online. It's basically City of Heroes. Cell shaded. And you can go to the desert and Canada...yes, I am ashamed.

I've gotten interested in a few games he's mentioned myself, City of Heroes included. I mostly tend to view his work as amusement rather than full-out review, however. They're generally less of an objective review than they are comical rants.

I take Yatzee's words with a grain of salt. in most cases when I buy a game I watch(Or read about three reviews, and if I can, I rent the thing. then and ONLY then will I buy the thing. the reviews are mostly there for me to see another persons perspective, but in the case of games like Halo, where reviewers were throwing perfects everywhere, I am glad I rented the thing. It is fun, but very... traditional(To the point of orthidoxy) But the POINT, I am trying to get to is that all I use reviews for, is to inform myself on what the games content is. because I won't even RENT a game involving certain subjects.

Like so many others I use his reviews for entertainment, not criticism for games I might buy, they are quite hilarious though.
