It can be set in a Burger King for all I care, as long as they make some sense in this shitstorm of a plot they've come up with. I'm still trying to figure out the end of Brotherhood. Not to say that it's a bad plot, but damn is it confusing.
LOL thats nothing compared to the MGS saga.

Would be good except for one thing: The reaction to the story.

Why? Assassin's Creed makes a big deal of showing every large event as being controlled from Templars on both sides, with Templars colluding from either side to twist things the right way. Also the South was fighting for state freedoms while the north was fighting for more centralised powers. The Assassin's would probably side with the decentralised power option, if they were to pick a side.

Either way there is gonna be some leaders of 'the North' that get killed or villainised. That will not go down well in the news (Fox getting a whiff of it being my biggest worry, really). The alternative to that is to water down stuff and make it crap.

So it's either gonna be controversial as hell, or a crap story. I doubt they'd go with the controversial option. And I like my AC story to be good, dammit!

I'm just reading up on some rumors on the possible setting of AC3. And it seems there's a lot of speculation emerging from Shaun Hastings last words in the game as being a possible reference to Civil War era America.

I'm not trying to appear critical but if the next game is set in America, as opposed to the locales in the other games, I might just cry.
Why? the main character lives in America.
At some point his family would have had to come here.
It only makes sense.

I'm with the Japan people. Anything close to resemble the Meiji Era without over-the-top combat will get me to actually buy a console. But the French Revolution doesn't strike as odd: I'd love to put the spear down Maximilian Robespierre's throat.

My suggestion would be Commodore Perry Japan and follow a Shogun-ish storyline. Actually, a Shogun-ish storyline fits perfectly with AC. It's basically what they've done. Other than that, I could care less about where it's set, I just don't want to have to deal with Ezio again. At least pick somebody new.
I would love to know more about Japanese cities at the time. As I said up-thread, Assassin's Creed really needs a particular type of city to function. You have to have a lot of densely populated houses, few taller than a few stories high; lots of zig-zagging streets; numerous towers; some churches or fortresses; and also some wide-open rural areas... and it helps if there are some well-known landmarks mixed in. Assuming Japan fits the bill, it would be a great setting for an Assassin's Creed game... but I don't know nearly enough about Japan to know for certain.
There weren't a whole lot of bustling metropolises back then, but Edo or Kyoto would be a good start. Lots and lots of countryside though. It would be interesting to know what kind of fun assassinations would take place through paper walls. Also, ninjas!
A nice cross between samurais, ninja clans, families, feuds and templars... I'D PLAY THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

See, this makes sense to me.

Now I am not educated in Japanese history but the thought of having a ninja assassin in Feudal Japan certainly appeals to me, plus there is much room for exploiting the beautiful aesthetics of Japanese architecture.

Frankly I'd like to see the next one be set somewhere like industrial revolution London or Nazi occupied France.
It would be a bit like the Saboteur though, won't it?
I've heard of it, but it passed rather far under my radar for the most part so I'm not aware of its story. I just have a soft spot for British locations and a fantasy of eagle jump stabbing someone from atop the Eiffel Tower.

Tell me you have heard of the Saboteur? It basically Assassin's Creed meets GTA in Nazi Occupied France. The parkour isn't quite as good but it's still fun, and the story is way better.

Think 'Inglorious Basterds- the Game' and you're about there.

Any game that can be summed up as "Inglorious Basterds: the Game" I think warrants I look into it. TO THE INTERWEBZ!! *poof*

Speaking as a relatively new fan of the series, I don't see what the big deal is. Ubisoft has shown that, in both this series and Prince of Persia, they're willing to put the time and effort into making a good story and immersive gameplay that most game developers put into making Space Marine Adventure VI. Wherever they decide to put the full sequel, isn't it reasonable to assume they'll do a good job of it? I mean, we're all in agreement that the previous installments have had solid, innovative concepts and realizations thereof, I hardly think the writers of this series, who have put a lot of work into this plot so far (despite it making about as much sense as a David Lynch film narrated by Charles Manson), are going to piss it all away just to pander to the American market. American audiences, and indeed audiences worldwide, have embraced the far-flung settings the game has come up with so far, it would be ridiculous to assume they would all stop doing so now.

Also, even if I am an American, I still feel that I have the right to be insulted that people of other nationalities would profess disdain for a new title in a series that they claim to be fans of just because it makes a tour of American Civil War times. Even if I personally believe they just won't take it there, rejecting the promise a title set in it could have because (and only because) it's 'another' game in America is just as groundless and wrong as an American passing up Assassin's Creed 1, The Sabetour or any other game that's outside their comfort zone. And I'm not singling out, both of these groups of people exist and need to be dutifully ignored while the rest of us grown-ups get our game on.

90% of rumours were pulled out of some attention whore's ass trying to pass it off as fact.

They won't. Not enough exploit ability of the free running in most periods of America.

I don't care where they do it, but let's not go for Desmond's game yet. Introduce him to us slowly. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is having Desmond do stuff now so that's a good start. Let's have another Assassin in the past, then we'll talk Desmond, maybe.

Calumon: Do they have hay stacks where that man is?

Look at it this way...

Assassin's Creed is unique in how it is one of the few titles not set in America.

People enjoy variety and it would seem less exotic and fresh to set it in America, where every other game is set.

It's nothing against Americans.

Now the French, on the other hand...
