While I'll admit the XM8 does have a bit wider functionality to it than the SCAR-L, I would also point out that the XM8 project was scrapped after trials after pieces started melting and soldiers found it too heavy. Plus, the OP asked what assault rifle, not what LMG.
(Edit, yes, I know the XM8 is basically an assault rifle that can be converted, but it's ability to be turned into a LMG doesn't necessarily make it the better rifle, just a more varied one. Personally I prefer specialized weapon systems that do one thing very well rather than a diverse one that does a bunch of stuff only sort of well.)
I actually started to rethink my decision in the long run though and I think I'd rather use a TAR-21 because of the compact design.
And yes, you can mount a GL on it as well.
MP5. Most likely, it'd be defense in a home or close quarters. I already have my 669, however, so I'm good for that.

First I'll say this, there's no such thing as an assault rifle. Any firearm can be used to assault people, assault rifle was a media coined termed to make them sound serious and scary. The only rifle that can be even considered an assault rifle is the sturmgewehr 44, because it's name means "storm/attack rifle". The rest are semi-automatic, or automatic rifles or carbines. And to answer the question, I'd take an FN-FAL semi-automatic rifle. It's accurate, powerful, and semi-auto is far better in any circumstance aside from providing covering fire. The added bonus is that it almost never jams, unlike M-16 and M-4's, and the AK-47 can't provide nearly accurate enough shots to protect anyone.
