The sad thing about this is that some people acually have a full buisness on Second Life, they have made a living off of it since all the money you have on the can can be transferd to real money, weather it be the Euro, U.S dollars, or Pounds. So even though you can engage in sexual activites you can also make a living off the game. Australia is really becoming a douche.
I forgot about that.

If they ban it then there will be a few pissed off people in Auz sueing the pants off the government for infringing on their legitimate business and loss of earnings.
Sadly we can barely claim money from the government that they actually OWE us without jumping through hoops.
If we try and sue them for loss of earnings through second life they will turn our whole Freedom of Expression back on us by saying that, since it was an online venture it does not come under our laws or jurisdiction thus making us, a third party, not to blame. Freedom of Expression being one of our key points in the argument about their censorship of the internet.

As was said in the article, it's a pretty backwards move for a developed nation. And you know what, this whole debacle would have been avoided if their government had an R18 rating or an equivalent.

One man on our senate voted against it.

We need the senates agreement as a whole for it to pass apparently.

Thats the thing its "democracy" apparently. Because of these freedoms that ALL people have, members of the government can use it against us, because that government can be technically viewed as a group of people, not a thing.

Not too sure on the government there, but over here, I believe its majority wins. Might not be correct though, our leaders always screw with us one way or another.

I did a little project on it and apparently the senate member from south or western Aus (can't really remember) is against it.

I think the reason we need full agreement is some are probably undecided and won't until more of the senate agree.

Also, by developed you mean piggy back off of the bigger nations or the most important one of the time.

I wonder how long this will last, I really can't see it being permanent.

Don't you mean one of the Attorney Generals? Michael Atkinson, the AG of South Australia voted against it, and the AGs need to be unanimous.

Ah thats it, sorry about the confusion. Thanks for clearing that up.

A friend and I got petition done a while ago about the R rating, 1000 in total.
I got a generic letter back saying thanks for my time 0.o

We're starting to see casualties from Australia's internet ban. Second Life was banned because the user can engage in sexual activities, which were which are added to the game through community objects. I think it's just a law of the internet: You give people tools, they're going to find ways to recreate their tools. Australia should ban XBox Live and all manner of online chat, because you can say and hear all manner of crude racial epithets involving your mother and a small equine.

That said, we all know what Second Life is really for.

Does that mean they will eventually ban The Sims for being able to conduct sexual activity too?

Now that the discussion has moved on to the ratings system and censorship, do you guys enjoy the cathartic thrills of splitting a man in half in [Prototype]? Also, judging by the inflated prices for games there, I'm willing to bet that your government is setting you people up to give up on videogames entirely.

Probably not, it is already censored after all...

I think I read somewhere that Michael Atkinson has a Wii in his office so he can better understand gaming...

It wouldn't surprise me though, don't forget the delayed release dates, we are after all like 6 months behind the rest of the world.

This is all coming from Kevin DuddRudd.
A man who went to a freaking strip club.
Actually, he has nothing to do with it.
It's the ratings board, who does it.

I just realised and i dont know why i didn't see it before.

It wouldn't be in their juristiction no, but you would be able to sue them for infringing on your right to work in a legitimate business area in a service that has commited no wrong. Plus when you are selling content such as that you can prove you arn't selling to people who are not legally allowed to buy it.

If people can sue other people for loss of earning through copying code for an object. I'm pretty confident you could sue the pants off the government for denying you access to a legitimate service (second life).

Your government enacted your rating system? That really sucks. Thank god for the ESRB being industry created.
