To be honest, the only way they can really protect their citizens from sex/violence etc aka, the stuff those nasty "video games" are made out of, they need to ban the internet completely and while they're there, they may as well ban free speech, free movement, education. I'd go on but fuck that they may as well just ban life because eventually at least SOME of their populace are going to encounter one of these terrible things.

Seriously though, I really don't see why the Australian Government is pushing this at all. Is it because they already know that come the next election they're screwed? I was under the impression that basically all of their citizens are opposed to all this censorship and it makes Australia look backward to the rest of the world. How this seems like a good idea to them is a mystery to me but come election day, they're gonna have some problems.

We're starting to see casualties from Australia's internet ban. Second Life was banned because the user can engage in sexual activities, which were which are added to the game through community objects. I think it's just a law of the internet: You give people tools, they're going to find ways to recreate their tools. Australia should ban XBox Live and all manner of online chat, because you can say and hear all manner of crude racial epithets involving your mother and a small equine.

That said, we all know what Second Life is really for.

Does that mean they will eventually ban The Sims for being able to conduct sexual activity too?
Probably not, it is already censored after all...

Now that the discussion has moved on to the ratings system and censorship, do you guys enjoy the cathartic thrills of splitting a man in half in [Prototype]? Also, judging by the inflated prices for games there, I'm willing to bet that your government is setting you people up to give up on videogames entirely.
I think I read somewhere that Michael Atkinson has a Wii in his office so he can better understand gaming...

It wouldn't surprise me though, don't forget the delayed release dates, we are after all like 6 months behind the rest of the world.
the thing is, The Sims has entire websites to breaking those censors, and a Wii? get real, hardest console to play, smallest good game base, and i havent heard of a sane player base for it just old people and 5 year olds. he should have a seperate computer for playing games like Crysis, WoW, SC, Diablo 2/3, UT04, Gears of War, and other good games

Nobody plays Second Life in Australia anyway. Although the media can't stop crapping on about the damn game over here like it's some kind of life-changing cyber-experience of the future, the fact is it flopped badly and hardly anyone uses it on account of it being very boring. Therefore although the media will have a field day with this, it will affect very few actual gamers.

Australia started as a penal colony so we're used to this kind of treatment from our governments. We don't get those fancy "rights" and "freedom" thingies that they have in other countries.

This is what the world is coming too: CENSORSHIP
NOTHING is worse for a free society than censoring in service of the government
NOTHING

Why does Australia constantly ban everything that brings joy to peoples lives everyday
pretty soon, everyone will be the same down under and fun would become some sort of punishment

Revolution, people, revolution.
You need to take back your country with your own hands, lest it be swallowed up by idiots who are paving a gilded road.

They should ban, banning! Because it rhymes with tanning, which requires you to show a little bit too much skin for the sunny giant island.

...and this from a country who tiles its bars so that at the end of an evening they can quickly hose the sick away.

Yeah, like Australia has cultured people of taste that need to be protected from pixelated erotica.

They should ban crayons as well. because kids can use it to draw penises on walls.
Good one, yeah. The Aussie officials seems rather afraid of sex and violence. Could it have something to do with the island being a former british prison colony?
Yeah, you would expect different from a former penal colony. (Sorry, had to do it.

Well, I definitely urge you Aussies to take action against this, because this is pretty ridiculous. Go throw eggs at your parliament buildings.

Yes but you can mod The sims to get rid of the censoring

This isn't entirely correct.
There is currently a proposed internet filter which is going through trials with a select few opt-in IP's. So it is still in the process, but any public discussion has basically been idiotic Parents who want the government to raise their children on one side and everybody else. So when a discussion paper is properly released I really hope everyone wakes up! Though with the amount of non-progressive fascist idiots that populate this country I wouldn't be surprised if it does go through.
