I've heard about the Australian government banning so much stuff, that I'm not surprised. It won't be long before they just ban computers, because they can be used to go on the internet. Then Australia will just become completely isolationist.

We're starting to see casualties from Australia's internet ban. Second Life was banned because the user can engage in sexual activities, which were which are added to the game through community objects. I think it's just a law of the internet: You give people tools, they're going to find ways to recreate their tools. Australia should ban XBox Live and all manner of online chat, because you can say and hear all manner of crude racial epithets involving your mother and a small equine.

That said, we all know what Second Life is really for.

Yes, but rarely on XBL will you hear anyone roleplaying the rape of a three-year-old boy. i stumbled onto that once--even just as a game it was horrifying.

I think I read somewhere that Michael Atkinson has a Wii in his office so he can better understand gaming...

It wouldn't surprise me though, don't forget the delayed release dates, we are after all like 6 months behind the rest of the world.
Playing on the Wii seems like an odd choice for someone who's opposed to mature rated games and is planning on locking down the internet. I mean, fitting, yes, but helpful? It's like inspecting a vegan kitchen to find the best way to clean cheese stains. The console has few mature titles and minimal, though highly restrictive, internet connectivity within games. I'm not bashing the Wii, I'm a proud owner, but that's the reality of the situation.

Bottom line: That's not how you get in touch with the issue.

Excuse me while I beat my anti-puritan head against a penis-scrawled wall.

And yes, Rudd has banned sex. [http://itsnothingserious.wordpress.com/2009/06/26/rudd-conquer-of-internet-bans-sex/]

"WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN..."

Seems that is ALL people do! I, for one, am sick and tired of doing "this" and "that" for "children."

When do ADULTS get a little attention? Especially SINGLE adults! We pay MORE in taxes for this luxury of being "single" yet have little say in what is "created" for us. Then when there IS something made, a government like that in Austrailia comes along to usurp it.

Talk about safe sex! At least Second Life doesn't have to sell condoms nor have clinics for those who begin to suffer from sexually transmitted diseases.

Parents, WHEN are you going to talk with your "children" so that they know that the word punishment actually means what it implies? WHEN are we going to "restrict" children rather than make more laws restricting ADULTS?

I am most definately thinking of the children because it is the fault of the parents and not the governments when these mischievious rug rats go beyond their limits and enter the adult ones. Hmmm...parents "banning" their children from playing Second Life...what an interesting concept.

Does that mean they will eventually ban The Sims for being able to conduct sexual activity too?
Probably not, it is already censored after all...

snip quote wall
Now that the discussion has moved on to the ratings system and censorship, do you guys enjoy the cathartic thrills of splitting a man in half in [Prototype]? Also, judging by the inflated prices for games there, I'm willing to bet that your government is setting you people up to give up on videogames entirely.
I think I read somewhere that Michael Atkinson has a Wii in his office so he can better understand gaming...

Yes but you can mod The sims to get rid of the censoring
Sorry bout the quote wall, but unofficial mods like that on games that have already met the ratings boards standards don't count. Online games cannot be rated for content apparently thus making them technically illegal.

At one stage they were thinking of stopping the sales of WoW and GW in shops because of this.

WHy dont we just send Michael Atkinson and Jack Thompson to the moon or Mars.
And sacrifice future space colonies? I say we drop them on a small island somewhere and let them govern themselves.

i don't really care about second life in fact i haven't cared about any games banned here.
That's OK, then. As long as you don't care.
Will you give a shit when it's too late and you lose something you do want to play?

This isn't about games, this is about civil liberties.
Stand up now or it will be too late.

I raised this question before and now I can say: HAHA told you so!

The question I raised was simple - if given the choice of testing the engine on it's own merits or using user created content that our government would go for the later and rate based on user content. As this article pointed out, you give us the way to make porn with a engine and we will make porn, every online game out there will have a uphill battle pass the rating tests. SL was first cause it was the most easiest to target, as user created content is a backbone of this online program and it has a smaller legal team and client base then most online games. Others WILL become targeted based on user interactions and content, which means ALL online games will fail the M15+ or below rating. Simply because all it would take is one user posting one link to some sort of porn site and suddenly you have nudity added to your rates.

First they came for SL and I said nothing cause I don't use SL....

Uh, I'm on the site at the moment, so unless Telstra finally did something right and told the government to go fuck themselves...

It's just another game I couldn't care less about and it's only the internet. I can live with it, no big deal.

This is what the world is coming too: CENSORSHIP
NOTHING is worse for a free society than censoring in service of the government
NOTHING
One country mass-banning sites does not a world make.

But this does raise slight worries to governments and (idiotic) parents that may follow suit.
I'm still hopeful that people here have common sense.

Hopeful.
