But lets put that aside. I still think anyone should be allowed to use the internet. It is on the parents to take care of their kids, but maybe some information on how to "protect" your kids online should be come more readily available? Maybe the news should talk about how to protect them, and not how the kids aren't protected at the moment!
People are missing the point entirely. Sure, we on The Escapist might be able to recognize that parents should take responsibility and children should be educated, etc etc etc. The people who make the decisions, however, are going the route of banning people from doing shit. My point was, should the people banned from doing shit be EVERYONE banned from certain things online, or ONLY CHILDREN banned from the internet altogether?

The example was people bitching that Chatroulette should be banned by the government because children can use it, therefore ruining it for the rest of us. In that situation, ignoring the fact that it really shouldn't be a case of banning anyone or anything because the people in charge are ignoring that fact, which is worse or better?

Because it would very difficult to enforce.

And parents need to stop blaming technology for their kids seeing porn or getting violent games. They need to blame themselves for not paying enough f***ing attention. (This is in response to the morning show you mentioned)
Difficult? Try impossible. A humongous amount of internet users are under 18, and kids will always find a way around any given situation, sneaky little bastards that they are...

Hmm, well the fact is that Chatroulette has no wards that will prevent young children encounter people and visions they should not have seen. I would vouch for not allowing kids under a certain age to use Chatroulette, the only problem is how to enforce this without having the parents manually block the site on the kids PC?

Making sure no "harm" may come to a kid on the internet is pretty much impossible. But in my honest opinion, if a kid is old enough to watch Jack Bauer torture and kill people, that kid is old enough to see a penis or vagina... Tits too, I don't see why media and some "concerned" parents go all crazy when a 12-year-old saw tits while playing Doom 3... (I haven't played Doom 3, and I don't know anything about tits being in the game. It's just an example!)

Yeah! We should lock them in the house, too! And Force them to sit in sensory deprivation chambers!

I'm twelve years old and what is this?

All jokes aside, I agree with Onyx Oblivion. Not that any parents will listen ofcourse.

Hell I saw on youtube a fascinated American news reporter when she heard that your contacts are stored on this thing called a 'sim card' and that you can change them between countries if your phone is unlocked to not incur roaming charges while calling locally.

Seriously, there is no way to tell the immature ones from the ones with sense and actual knowledge.
I'm 17, and I think I'm fine, and have been since I started using the net, which actually wasn't tooooo long ago

Why do I have to be banned from the internet? I don't troll, I don't force my opinion on others and I like being able to see pron without having to buy it from a judgemental newsagent.

Ban teenagers from the internet, you cut off their access to porn, the number of rapes per year explodes, beastiality and incest also rise in occurence. Brilliant move.

*Checks age* I'm not eighteen for another few months =(

Besides the internet is for everyone, banning people under eighteen is not the greatest idea.

Now if we could ban stupid people from the internet we might be getting somewhere.

No, honey. You see, there's this magical force in the world that makes it objectively wrong for you to see certain things. Therefore, it's an either/or: those things being banned or you being banned until you're eighteen.

Hey my kid saw a boob in a video game once! We need to ban games to all people who are younger than 18!

This is what this conversation is equal to. Banning the internet to minors is a stupid, stupid, stupid idea.

No, no, no. Just your common troll.
Although, I must admit this to all of Escapist kind: I visit 4chan.
NOT /B/. HELL NO.
The only one I visit is the games category, and occasionally weapons.

I'm sixteen, but have an entire, functioning brain. May I be included in this new internet?
I agree, many people are mature enough for internet usage at the age of 16, in fact I was mature enough at 13 but yeah. I think rather than an age test for the internet there should be a maturity test. Plus, people can always lie about their age.

all you can do as parents is watch over your kids
But parents don't want to do that. They want their government to do it for them and ruin the internet for everyone else just to make it easier on said parents.

EDIT: @Dreyfuss: agree with your entire post, but unfortunately we live in a society of morons.
Perhaps we should ban those parents from having kids :p

Seriously tho it would be impossible to police, especially since most kids know more about computers at age 12 then their parents :p
