The only words I could read without my brain exploding were "this" "and" "just" and "crap".
Where did you get "This" from? I sure as hell don't see it.

OT: But...But...I need my internet!
"DiZ" = "This"

But what the hell is... lYk and rYt.

I'm the most mature thirteen year old I know....

....which isn't saying much...

....so can I be allowed on the interwebz?
Yes well I am the most mature person I know, including the 1300 year old alien in my closet. Hah!
Seriously, calling yourself mature will seem childish to a lot of people, a better strategy is to call yourself an utter moron in a very serious tone. People will be amazed at your incredible maturity to see and point out your own faults.

OT: If you ban me, I'm going to invent my own network of machines, free to be used by any age group or ethnical minority*! It's going to have liber in it's name, as in freedom. And something with web, because I like this web too.

[sub]*I forgot how to use the footnote thing, whatever. The funny thing is, though. Once you start banning certain age groups, there will be bands of people for banning other races and minorities too. I'm sure there already are groups for that, but once it's proven possible to ban certain groups from the net, I'm sure there'll be an uproar of anti-theists, pro-theists, anti-gays and some racist people who just can't leave that old subject alone.[/sub]

People are STILL managing to miss the point? Holy shit.

To reiterate: we've established that yes, parents should be more involved, take responsibility, educate their children and themselves, etc etc etc. You can stop spamming it now. The point is, the people in charge don't agree and are going down the route of censorship instead. Since our options are censorship or censorship, the point was to discuss which type of censorship is least bad.
fine. Censorship is bad M'kay?

The least bad would be charging people to use specific sites. What kind of guy is going to pay a monthly fee just to wank himself off?

Okay, there will be some, but I can only see youtube improving if people had to pay to post.

It's a disgusting bastardization of what the internet stands for, but it'd be better than a virtual police randomly killing sites they deem, "inappropriate"

Because age banning has worked so well in the past.

Minors drink, gamble and smoke well before they become of legal age.

Parents need to actually be involved in the kids lives, instead of letting television and the internet do it. Maybe then we'd have a group of people who were less affected by them at an early age.

But schools attract paedophiles, surely we should ban children from there too?

Or as so many have stated, you can place the home PC in a shared room, where the kid can be left alone to use it, but can be checked on every now and then, to make sure they've not wandered off somewhere weird.

No, parental filters are not perfect, but damn, when I visit my parents and try to help them with their PC, I'm always wary some pop up is going to offer me 'free naked teens' while they're watching :D

Just take some interest in what your child does is all, if all my child did was chemistry, in the end I'd want to make sure it's not all working towards home made drugs or explosives. Same goes for the internet.

(as for pedos, they're a tiny tiny minority, and while I'm not ignoring the seriousness of child abuse, we shouldn't change the world 'just in case', when sensible precautions work far better than wild overreactions, for more information youtube 'brass eye special')

No, because not all kids are complete idiots. Just most of them. I guess I'm biased because I'm young myself, but really, we're not breaking anything? The news will always find something to complain about. You could ban everyone from the internet and they would still complain.

I'm going to stop checking back here because people are obviously skipping the "read to see if your issue has been addressed" phase that used to be a big deal and just repeating the same inane comments over and over, completely disregarding the point of the thread.

Feel free to continue on the derailed path, I'm opting out though.

Other than the escapist, I don't use social sites. I don't look at porn and I NEED the net for my school projects. I'm 15, so I disagree with the idea, make the age 13 and we can see about something.

Beside, how would you enforce the ban? The internet is like capitalism, its greatest strength and fatal flaw is freedom.

The sad thing is the fact that most children actually have a functioning brain and you might have difficulties noticing that they are under aged (like right here on a forum).
The ones we call "children" on the internet are useless annoying pant pissers who think writing word "dick" into every sentence is funny. I hate this kind but I wouldn't dare to close classify every kid on a planet as "an idiot who is unable to use the internet properly so it's better to ban him from it... FOR HIS OWN GOOD" that's just stupid and intolerant.

Oh and I'm turning 20 in a month (1 of june :p) so it's not like I actually CARE about such thing because I'm under aged...

Oh my god I'm old.

Well I'm under 18, and I need the internet for a large portion of my schoolwork. I have never done anything that really justifies me losing the privilege to use it. Also I just enjoy it..

But then where will under age kids get their porn?
The old-fashioned way? Voyeurism, dirty magazines, and late night cable TV.
They're not smart or organised enough anymore.
Its not out fault dammit, 'teh interwebs' has ruined the imagination, creativity and sheer bloody mindedness required, as our forebears did to get a playboy mag....
Man, when I was a kid, a skin mag was GOLD.

You could trade it for anything you wanted, it was a commodity to be horded and used as currency.

As someone who very recently turned 18, I endorse this idea. Suck it under-agers!

I don't think 18+ only would be fair. 13+ would get the job done, and the only way those 13 and under could access the internet is through a school IP where everything is already monitored by the IT department. And if your child gets online at home somehow, it'll be you getting fined or jailed for negligence, not that messed up website getting sued for being messed up.

banning the internet for children because they could be taken advantage of would be like banning the internet for EVERYONE because SOME people can use it to plan terror attacks ect.

censorship is ALSO wrong, ESPECIALLY with the internet. it is SO EASY for parents to install their own filter and censorship programs on their own computers if they want to, or atleast it should be. then, AS ALWAYS, it should be THEIR responsibility to protect and raise their children right!

I mean ffs! apple, do something USEFUL with your "closed" ideology, actually create a non hackable kids PC, that comes preloaded with all the parental controls in the world!

Because they'll find a way to circumvent the ban?
Because kids under 18 also need the Internet for school work?
Because it's not fair banning them when the problem is the people who expose themselves?
Because it's just about impossible to do?
Because... okay this has gone on for too long.

So yeah, it's a bad idea. Some kind of vigilance on chat sites could work, but then there's the whole privacy issue.
I'd say; Put a child-safety lock on every computer a kid uses.
