These people can't seem to understand that...IT'S NOT THE WORLD'S JOB TO RAISE YOUR CHILDREN AND PROTECT THEIR INNOCENCE. Do it yourself. Be a less shitty parent. Watch what your kids are doing when online!
I totally agree.

Parents these days leave their kids on the bloody telly and computer way too much.

I'm a teenager mind you, and i'm on the computer way too much, but i'm a lot harder to psychologically scar from grown men wanking (honestly, i'd probably laugh)

no no you all think too boxlike simply legislating that under X aged people are banned is enough enforcement is not an issue because the first person to complain about the current problems and save the children are bringing them selves to attention

the object is to prevent complaining ? yes then legislating a ban is enough

Parents are always too eager to blame TV, music, movies, video games, the internet, basically anything besides their parenting for their kids either being in danger, or behaving like little shits.

It's their job to moderate how much of these things their kids are exposed to. If a parent lets little Timmy play GTA4, then the next day little Timmy knifes his teacher, that's their fault for letting the little shit play an 18 rated game without putting it into context.

Personally I wouldn't let my kids play an 18 rated game at all until they're that age. I grew up playing Gran Turismo, Tekken, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy. Games with great depth that were so fun that didn't rely on excessive amounts of violence or sexual content. What's wrong with ensuring these are the only types of games kids are exposed to?

Same with the internet. If you don't want your child having little chats with kiddyfiddler1959 then monitor their activities on the internet, and perhaps even get a program that prevents them visiting certain websites.

Well MAYBE the parents should be doing a better job themselves instead of blaming technology!

Its easier to blame tech than to do a better job, which is why they do it.

I started the Internet life at 12, year later...became a not complete idiot. More of a dick yes, but less of an idiot.

Edit: What I mean is, how about we allow children to get on the Internet if they are mature? Oh, and they can't use their voice...ever. Not until their balls drop.
Not even then. I think i have run into about 4 ppl in any online game who didn't immediatly start spouting off like some random gangsta from downtown Chicago, or shout "I JUST OWNED YOU BIOTCH!!!"

Its always the most noobish people who do it too...

I don't really see why children shouldn't be allowed to see certain things anyway. Unless they're completely retarded, they should be able to close the page when they see something they don't like. A lot of people under 18 are far more mature than most adults anyway. Example: A large proportion of the Escapist.

I'm the most mature thirteen year old I know....

....which isn't saying much...

....so can I be allowed on the interwebz?
Yes well I am the most mature person I know, including the 1300 year old alien in my closet. Hah!
Seriously, calling yourself mature will seem childish to a lot of people, a better strategy is to call yourself an utter moron in a very serious tone. People will be amazed at your incredible maturity to see and point out your own faults.

OT: If you ban me, I'm going to invent my own network of machines, free to be used by any age group or ethnical minority*! It's going to have liber in it's name, as in freedom. And something with web, because I like this web too.

[sub]*I forgot how to use the footnote thing, whatever. The funny thing is, though. Once you start banning certain age groups, there will be bands of people for banning other races and minorities too. I'm sure there already are groups for that, but once it's proven possible to ban certain groups from the net, I'm sure there'll be an uproar of anti-theists, pro-theists, anti-gays and some racist people who just can't leave that old subject alone.[/sub]
Hmmmm....I am amazed and I will use that the next time someone starts the whole *maturity* thing again.

I'm sixteen years old.

I shall be excluded? How dare you! The internet is my...home.

What would I do without The Escapist, Kongregate, Google, YouTube, 4chan, paheal...

Really, the internet is all about information. Personally, I need this information for, for example, presentations at school.

This is a little off topic but shouldnt religious people be banned as well? If I hear one more thing about Creationism I'm going to have to round up all those idiots and burn them at the stake.
So its really a kind of self-preservation on their part. Otherwise I'd go postal.

Parents have to take responsibility for what their child does, not the government. Don't promote a nanny state.
My intention was the opposite. I want governments to keep their nanny state ways off the internet, not add to it. Governments are constantly reducing freedom on the internet in the name of "protecting" children. To me that seems idiotic: we don't ban strip clubs to "protect" children, we ban children from strip clubs. The same principle should apply on the internet.

Either way - banning children or policing a child-infested internet - the government has a huge task. Either way, the concept of freedom on the internet will change.

The question is which is worse: children on the internet causing governments to ruin the internet, or keeping the internet free by banning children until they reach a certain age - after which they get to enjoy it just as we do.

How about the parents pay more fucking attention to what their kids do on the internet and failiing that at least set up some security settings or how about just talk to them about internet safety rather than leaving it up to the school.

Inattentive parents need to shut their mouths and work their own problems out, it is not the internets job to protect your child, that's YOUR job. Now do your job instead of being a poor parent.

Parents should take all the necessary precautions, to ensure that their children roam the webb in safety. Be not lax in your duties, do not force this duty on everybody else.

Hello there, I'm one of the 15 year old people with good grammar, spelling, and the ability to be coherent on the internet, and knows to stay away from things like 4chan.
I think you forgot about us.

In the 50s Parents blamed rock n roll. In the 60s they blamed drugs. In the 70s they blamed Punk. In the 80s they blamed Metal, Rap and MTV. In the 90s they blamed Metal, Rap some more as well as computer games. Then we get to now and parents are blaming everything under the FUCKING SUN including the net for exposing their children to, what the PARENTS feel are, unsavory immoral evil corrupting images etc.
In the past 60 years parents have not once stopped to consider that maybe THEY are at fault. "It's not our fault our son is a rapist or serial killer. Nope. Our locking him in the cellar telling him that he was evil cause he was gay and that god hated him did nothing to harm his mind. It was all medias fault. We're fault less."
Its like governments and various faiths the world over. Nope according to them they can never do anything wrong.

*Sigh* Anyone got a few thousand nukes? Its time to start this world over I think.

But then where will under age kids get their porn?
The old-fashioned way? Voyeurism, dirty magazines, and late night cable TV.
Yeah, when I was a kid I had to work to see some boobies!

Easily accessed internet grumble has made it far too easy for the little buggers, they don't appreciate it!

the chances of life reappearing on a rock taht's gone through a nuclear winter and had its oceans evaporated into space is probably pretty low.

I am pretty sure you were being facetious but just sayin that there is no "starting the world over" It will either die and never return, or keep on going along its sine graph of highs and lows.

I think it's human nature to believe oneself is faultless. Probably because we live in 1st person and not third omniscient.

Well I'm not 18 until a dozen or so more days can I still stay on?

Seriously the internet should not have an age limit but a maturity and dickhead limit. If you exceed the dickhead lmit and meet maturity requirements you are allowed on.
