Perhaps not, but I still think all of their songs are awesome. (My inner fanboy wants to punch you.)

On topic: Of the bands I listen to... I can't think of anything. Except for maybe Panic! at the Disco. They had a major change in sound in their second album. But it wasn't necessarily worse than the first album.

Arch Enemy - Angela's material killed this band.

Slayer - Once creative, yet they chose to write more Nu-Metalish material as the years went on.
You know, I responded before but I didn't notice what you said about Slayer. And....with all due respect, your just wrong. They have never written anything even remotley close to nu-metal.

It's not really anything to do with selling out, just that as they grew up the rough edges that made them so listenable were filed off.
Once the quirks and aggression that made them unique were gone they degraded into just another teen emo-punk band. The raft of bands that popped up trying to emulate their success didn't help them either, as they instantly had the polish the Prophet's grew into, it only made them sound more generic.

Shame really, they're and awesome live group.

Got there first dude, look up ^ totally agree though. Not just the rough edges and aggression, also the experimental nature of the tracks on Fake Sound of Progress. Lots of playing with samples and DJ mixes, quirky chord changes etc.. And yeh the aggression has gone, all the Progress tracks had a feeling of anger, a bit of punk creeping in, but StartSomething and whatever the hell the last one was called just turned that into some kind of emo angst (mo' money...)

I wasn't trying to detract from their later efforts, don't get me wrong. Hullabaloo is also a masterpiece.

Just you wait.

Myself?
I can't think of any.
Indeed, that's the nicest thing about listening to bands so few people in general seem to have heard of, you can have your own opinion without getting preached at for how they "went commercial", "sold out" or "strayed from their roots" or whatever.

The first band I can think of is 'My Dying Bride' I haven't bought their latest album, but the one before that was certainly not as good as some of their earlier works, but then again, they have released a lot of albums.

Linkin Park are not as good as they were either. I haven't liked anything since Hybrid Theory or Meteora, and (ironically enough) I think they sold out, went commercial and strayed from their roots when they did they collaboration with that prick Jay-Z.

I think they might have been one of the bands that turned me over to underground music.

This thread should be "Bands which you prefer the earlier material of". Good, bad, better and worse are not useful words here, and will almost definately result in flaming.

The Rolling Stones.

A once legendary band turned into a parody of themselves. Everything after 'Exile On Main Street' was 'meh to utter crap, with the occasional glints of their former glory. Oh, and their live performances are horrifyingly bad. Not good bad, just bad bad to the extent of not recognizing some of the songs until halfway through them. Sad to see a titan fall so deep.

Metallica was ruined by Bob Rock
Guns and Roses or should i say Axl and Poses
The Who when they went funky
Black Sabbath when they got rid of Ozzy and got Dio
Everything Aerosmith after 1990

Has anyone else notice that Great bands like the Doors and Jimi Hendrix Never went downhill and lost creativity, they died before anyone could even muster that thought a shame isn't it. I would say the same for the Grateful Dead but hell everything they put out was Great or Little over average, I mean the dudes toured until their leader died in 1995.

I'd have to say Green Day. Me no likeh the new album. System of a Down changed as time went on, but it didn't make them worse. Hmm...it's hard to think.
If System of A Down's change is good in your eyes, and Green Day's is not, you have lost my respect.

U2, though, went from mediocre to flat-out bad in my opinion.
I'm not sure that I understand what you mean. In my opinion, Green Day's older albums are much better than 21st Century Breakdown. I loved American Idiot, aside from one song. System of a Down didn't really take too much of a stoop.

System of a Down also went sour after they let Daron have creative input.
Daron wrote an awful lot of their songs. Serj and Daron were the writers. I'm not sure how far down their career that you're going, but the majority of Toxicity was writen by Serj, whilst Hypnotise and Mezmerise were mostly written by Daron. Steal this Album! was written by Serj and Daron.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer Serj's voice over Daron's any day.
It's really Hypnotize/Mesmerize that I have a problem with.
Daron's voice just..grates.
Steal This Album is probably my favourite, though. Along with Self Titled.
Oh, poor old Syndrome of a Down.

Daron's voice is real chalk on blackboard stuff. Ruined the last 2 albums for me. The dude is really not a good singer.

Everybody everybody everybody fucks/sucks... not exactly up to the lyrical standard of Chop Suey.

Fall Out Boy.

Take This To Your Grave and From Under The Cork Tree were great, but their sound and style changed a lot with Infinity on High and Folie a Deux, I liked the way he sang in the earlier stuff to his new voice, and the lyrics seem to be getting worse. Overall they are a lot more pop now than before, I guess because they got so famous.
But I do appreciate they are advancing their sound and branching out into different areas.

Not a band, and I'm gonna get flamed for this, but Avril Lavinge. She actually did a good job of being the anti-Britney (someone had to) at first IMO, but she took that, set it on fire, recorded its burning, and released it as "Girlfriend."

Other than her, probably everyone considering how music fans are. Everyone seems to have "sold out" after some point, even artists and bands who just started yesterday.

Andrew W.K. - His first album rocked, but The Wolf was a huge disappointment.
Guns 'n Roses - They were never the same after The Spaghetti Incident.
System of a Down and ACDC have already been covered by previous posts.

Same. Streamline is their best song in my opinion.

I dunno. Modest Mouse gets weirder, but that doesn't mean worse. To be fair to Metallica there are some songs on St. Anger that have promise, but the production value sucks. I suppose I also prefer Children Of Bodem's earlier work too. I wouldn't call their newer stuff bad, just... not for me.

I agree. I like their older stuff, but... eh... their act of- arguably- "selling out" with Guitar Hero kinda sent them over the edge for me.

Weezer is the best example of this. Their first two albums, The Blue Album and Pinkerton, are the two best pop-rock albums of all time IMO. Since then they've maybe had two or three genuinely good songs, and they've released Make Believe, which was pure garbage. I can't see them going back to how they were though after how popular the piece of shit that is "Beverly Hills" became.
