The Recession has to be solved by the private sector, not the government sector, but the government has the power to completely screw everyone over. If the government wants to help then they would need to do some really unpopular things, like lowering minimun wage or deregulating manufacturing industries.

I can't be the only one who took one glance at the thread title and immediately thought of at least three reasons to say "bullshit."

But, on-topic: the U.S., India, and Pakistan sign and ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. I'd hope for North Korea, too, but there's a limit to hopes and dreams.

I was surprised by this sudden shock announcement and was expecting to be reading all about it in the papers tomorrow, until I learnt that it was kind of a joke thread. Pity, that wouldn't have been too bad a discussion point.

Of course, the first discussion point would have been "how on earth could the executive make a law right off the bat?"

I almost had hearth attack reading the name of the topic. That is the news i want to hear (except the prostitution).

It would be better if prostitution was legal. They are legal in Amsterdam, and because of this, the percentage of people with STI's has decreased immensely. They are required to have an STI check every month, and aren't controlled by pimps, so they have a nice carreer.

*EDIT* I wouldn't actually 'rent' a hooker, though.

Well, there are still problems with pimps and women forced to work as prostitutes here in Holland. These women are typically from Eastern Europe and are brought to the glorious west with promises of better lives.

Also, prostitution is legal in all of Holland, not just in the capital

Marijuana is an anesthesiologist's annoyance, there are better, more convenient, and less addictive pain medications for all types of pain. If someone has short term pain, morphine (which is pretty similar, but not quite), and nothing as addictive an opiate (morphine, vicodin, percocet, weed, etc.) should be used for long term, medicinal marijuana is bs, because if an addiction is developed to morphine or percocet, its harder to get a quick fix than with weed

I'm stunned by how many people actually believed this...

The president doesn't REALLY have the power to get things done instantly, guys. I mean, his biggest idea since starting this whole president thing has been the 'health insurance for all' plan, and after all these months we aren't any closer to it at all. How could you possibly believe he'd say "Oh, by the way, I made it law, marijuana's legal now"?

Okay, I would like to point out that I am British before I say this...

Actually you are ALOT closer to getting the Public Option, Harry Reid has put it in the bill so now it needs 60 votes to get it out and the Republicans dont have that. So it is VERY likely that the Public Option is going to go ahead... AND it is the Opt-out option rather than the Trigger option so its actually the good version.
