I think that people put way too much thought into games that obviously aren't meant to be taken seriously. If say... Mass Effect were as silly, but wanted to be taken as seriously as it is, then you could complain about how immature it is, but it's Bayonetta. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

Bayonetta is a wonderful piss take on alot of gaming and pop culture. it's super over the top, silly, and if you take anything in it seriously, you've missed the point. This is the same guy who directed Viewtiful Joe, DMC and Okami, he knows how to joke about, and also, all these games have poked fun at sexuality in games. it's a running gag with clover/platium

I liked Bayonetta, but not for the oversexed themes.

The gameplay was great; frantic, speedy and good looking. The story wasn't brilliant, but I can forgive it for some pretty cool bossfights.

From what I've seen and heard it is a pretty damn good game, good combat, replayability etc. with a lot of tongue in cheek innuendo, double entendres, and straight out entendres lol.
I'm almost certain they did it as a joke, it isn't just Japan, and lighten up.

Oh hell yeah, I'm sure the gameplay is great. BUT gamplay is not hard to design, just takes a team and some simple and good ideas.
I would respectfully disagree, often getting game play right is one of the hardest parts of designing a game. And the mentally over the top silliness of Bayonetta couldn't have been easy to get just right.

Y'know, I actually didn't mind it.

Usually the needless sexualization of female game characters gets on my nerves. But Bayonetta was so utterly blatant about it that I really couldn't hold it against the game.

Basically, if you bought Bayonetta then you probably knew exactly what you were in for and if you don't like it then you have nobody to blame but yourself. Buying that game and expecting tasteful aesthetics would be like buying Gears of War and expecting solid characterization and groundbreaking narrative.

When all is said and done, I would rather that a product like Bayonetta be presented in an up-front manner rather then trying to sneak the sexualization under the radar or hiding it with terms like "strong female lead" or "empowerment".

Firstly, the game wasn't trying in anyway to take itself seriously. It was a cheesy action game and it reveled in it. And, Bayonetta is currently my vote for game of the year.

And, according to MovieBob of this site, Bayonetta is perhaps the first video game female character to forgo the dismissive and submissive conventions of a female character. Bayonetta is the "first video game women that's been successfully and unashamedly built to not just be sexy, not just be strong, but to be sexually intimidating." Check out the videos for his complete thoughts.

I agree with very much of what MovieBob had to say; I'm sure Bayonetta isn't the absolute first, but probably the first that has such a level of popularity. Bayonetta is a very strong character in every sense. She does do some very sexual dancing and moves in the game but she does it because she wants to (it fits her character), she enjoys doing it, and it's not just to attract male gamers to buy the game like Dead or Alive.

I agree but in wider terms the dominate and sexual confident women is as much a cliche of female sexuality as submissive, the only other character in gaming I can think of is SHODAN from system shock which was basically an A.I dominatrix

Bayonetta was basically this

It's a game, what else could it be other then "all in fun"?
I only played the demo of bayonetta and I didn't really care for it either, but it's obvious to me that they made a game that they wanted to make. Not every game needs to be tailored specifically to you to deserve a place in the gaming world. It's actually big enough for everyone, believe it or not.

I thought it was bloody hilarious. It's worth playing just to see what they'll do next to cram that extra bit of sexualization in.

What makes what the game does a good thing, more than anything, is that it doesn't take itself seriously for a second, and neither should you. Seriously now, tell me with a straight face that anyone could be in any way sexually aroused by this game. I dare you.

Honestly, if you're going to complain about sex in video games, complain about Dragon Age, where they've just thrown in a bunch of god-awful sex scenes to make the game "mature".

I think of it as a Devil May Cry game where I have an ass to look at from time to time without feeling weird

and it is damn fun, I just love it =P

Psst! It's not just Japan.
You can find hyper-sexed/ silly/ awful design game content from just about anywhere.

Stop pointing fingers at one culture. It's pervasive among ALL cultures.

EDIT: And the way some people are, even Dragon Age can be pretty silly in matters of sex.
Ever order the special service at the brothel?
Agreed.

OP: Dude, dont blame the companies that make the games, blame the people that buy them. The game companies make games immature and sexual because that SELLS.

I did not like Bayonetta, found the combat too easy, the QTE's were stupid, and I disliked the core of the game (Art style, what I saw of the story, the characters, and the 'humour').

I also dislike God of War, Darksiders, and Devil May Cry so I don't know what I expected. Would not have picked it up at all if not for working at a game store and needing to know about it.

Needless to say it was returned quite swiftly.

Bayonetta is tasteless and immature?! HOW?! how could that be? no NO that's impossible! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

they lied to me! LIED TO ME! how will I be able to game from now on knowing that not all games can be like Call of Duty or God of War! how can I live with myself... with all these lies!

all those combos, gameplay, ridiculous over the top goofiness, epic huge boss battles and pure unadulterated FUN are meaningless now... might as well quit... there is nothing sacred...

IT'S ALL LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES! *sob *sob *sob

How would YOU feel if you were a game designer who had to make that game, would you begin to despise yourself? I'm sure I would...
Uh, as far as I know, Bayonetta was basically the brainchild of the game designer, so why would he despise himself for HIS OWN idea?

I know I wouldn't.

I'm sorry, I'm just really getting tired of things like this nowadays, popping up everywhere. They just lack taste...
Didn't your mommy teach you that "good taste" is subjective?

I've heard it was supposed to be a self parody, but I almost get the feeling it was crying that excuse a liiiittle too much. Some parts were pretty funny in that "oh I get what they're making fun of" sort of way, but then there are bonus galleries that seem intended to give player something to jerk it to and... well I just don't buy it entirely.

I loved the gameplay enough that I didn't have to love the story/aesthetics to enjoy it. Same way I feel about DMC 3 and 4, and I actually enjoyed those components of 3 (given, I was like 14).

I thought it was great, it was so bizzare that I actually enjoyed playing a game for the first time in a long while.

I found it very refreshing because nowhere in that game were the 3 words "shooter", "first" and "person" clumped together.

It's all very tongue-in-cheek in Bayonetta.

I freaking loved the game, so I'm a little biased.
