It's not tasteless just because it doesn't appeal to your tastes.
I found it hilarious.

I am sick of the rampant misogyny in gaming though, seeing as how I'm no longer a teenager who thinks with his dick all the time (now I just do it on the weekends).
Watch and pay attention to MovieBob's character analysis of Bayonetta:
Your just trading in one cliche stereotype for another, submissive to bitchy latex wearing dominatrix.

Please, go play Dreamfall or The Longest Journey to see strong female protagonists who don't have dress provocatively in order to fulfill some japanese teens wet dream. Honestly if I'm in the mood to see strippers I'm not going to pop Bayonetta in, I'll just go to the nudie bar.

I think a lot of you are missing the point. Especially because it looks like you made your opinion based on screenshots or a demo.

Let's make it clear: YES, Bayonetta is crazy over the top. YES, it can be tiring and immature. And, finally: YES, the fact that it's intentionally stupid doesn't make it less annoying.

But all of this doesn't change the fact the Bayonetta is possibly the best action game ever made. The combat system is absurdly deep. Every move can be performed in many different ways. The order of the attack moves, the timing in which they are executed, the use of special powers and different weapons... Bayonetta gives the player the widest arrange of tools I've ever seen. Watching the videos realized for the official guide is like watching some world champion playing Ikaruga. It's mesmerizing. You can play the game from start to finish four or five times and still finding new strategies, new weapons and different approaches to enemies.

Of all the action games, only Devil May Cry got near such a depth (God of War 3 shouldn't even be considered). But Bayonetta has much more elegant, flexible e complete game mechanics. And it's also pretty easy to play. The richness of the gameplay in not based on one-frame precision combos nor on complicated button sequences.

There's a reason the official guide of this game is 400 pages long. Bayonetta is a masterpiece of game design. Talking so much about the story or the sexual innuendos in the game is like talking about the color of the paint on a momument. It kind of misses the point.

first of all: its japanese. and it is atleast something new, like again a uber muscled god, without a emotions. it is not a game to take serious, but the style of the whole game (art, music, etc.) is weird but at the same time awesome.

Mind you I didn't play very long into Bayonetta, as I'm tired of the whole Devil May Cry/God of War/Amazing Spider-Man over-stylised action game design choice, but I never came across anything that was truely and ultimately immature or "insult to women". Just as I never saw any highly muscled man who rips off his shirt and glistens in the sunlight/moon light/dead demon body's burning ember light as ultimately immature. Amusing, over the top, ridiculous aye, but nothing more.
Tomb Raider with "let's make her breasts even bigger" as a real game art style choice, that's tasteless. Duke Nukem is tasteless for women as only good for sex bimbos and men as muscle head gun freaks who only care for instant gratification, that be immature.

Yeah I can see why people don't like it. I played a demo and I was immediately entranced by how trippy it was. I mean sure the plot isn't breaking any new barriers, but hey, even God of War's plot took a downward turn in the final installment. This game gets it out of the way early.

How is Bayonetta a wet dream for most japanese teens? All the characters in the game are european, the game didn't even have a japanese voice track either. I played The Longest Journey but I couldn't finish it because the gameplay just wasn't compelling for me. I prefer adventure games that you can walk around in an 3D world like Shadow of Destiny or Beyond Good and Evil. Bayonetta isn't trying to be a representation of a real women, she's a witch. Her character makes sense in the universe the game takes place. Go harp on games like DoA and X-blades.

Oh hell yeah, I'm sure the gameplay is great. BUT gamplay is not hard to design, just takes a team and some simple and good ideas.
Then honestly, why are so many games lacking in gameplay but full of beautiful visuals and/or story?

But really, do you want a gaming landscape that doesn't allow for games like Bayonetta? It would be pretty boring if every game was Half Life or Fallout. I believe it was Alan Thicke who once wrote "What might be right for you might not be right for some". I'm all for diversity in games, I like serious games and I like batshit crazy games, not to mention that the main character looks like the Baroness on a trip to the S&M bar which shouldn't bother any red blooded male. (If you are female, I can see why you wouldn't like it).

Besides, you want to mention a bad female role model, that would be any princess in a Nintendo game, they're helpless without Mario and Link. Wait you mentioned Zelda as a game that does it right, so you must be a mysoginist since you prefer the helpless damsell in distress more than a bad ass action grrl. (That part was a joke by the way).

I agree with bob and disagree with OP entirely. Will also pick the mentioning of Zelda to say that no character in Zelda is as well developed as Bayonetta, and some had ten to twenty times more games depicting them as Bayonetta.

Bayonetta is a great character complementing a great game, which could probably be GOTY if it wasn't for western people tabooing it.

Only saw the demo, to me seemed like a female version of Dante's Inferno, seeing as they came out at a similar time period. I just found the over-sexualized stuff funny as hell. The game seemed like it would do alright, but it seemed just like any other plotless repetitive fighting button masher.

It's just intentionally made ridiculously over the top. It's not suppossed to be taken seriously, and it's more of a parody than anything.

Well okay, just because you don't like a game because of the country it came from is fine. But to rant and rave when you obviously have no experience IN Japanese society is just absurd. There is a plethora of games that never are released to North America entirely on the basis that the Japanese companies KNOW they will not find an audience. Different cultures will always produce different games, as they will produce different ANYTHING.

Basically comparing the two I find that Japanese people seem to embrace their sexuality on a different level. While we are all "hush hush" and sexual areas of cities are usually slummy and dirty, and our TV is all censored to the point of ridiculousness. The red light districts of Japan mingle comfortably with the rest of the entertainment districts. As do the brothels and the love hotels spotted across the city.

Life in different countries is different. And the only way you can understand that is to GO to these places....and not believe everything you see on the internet.

yeah, i have a friend who played that alot. watched him finish it in one sitting. then when i wasnt looking, he won the perfect trophies in every level. All i have to say to that is "Why would you take so much time on such a bad game?"

Yes. Obviously there's a market for it, and not everyone gets so embarrassed by the sight of sexy fighting. There's nothing wrong with tapping into the sexual for an aesthetic. Tastes vary.

What the hell do big corporate game desingers think we are nowadays? Do they think we're all sexually frustrated creeps with bizzare fetishes? Bayonetta isn't even sexy, and the story and concepts are shit. True, it was made in Japan. Do they get excused for this? No. Keep your creepy sexual fantasies to yourself, and put your obvious talents to something with some taste for God's sake.

I'm a very aesthetic based guy, and if a game looks or sounds bad I can NOT enjoy gameplay. I'm looking at you, Japan!

Now, Japan can make some beautiful works. Look at things like Zelda and some JRPGs. Wonderful stories and artwork. But occasionally you get some shit like the game mentioned beforehand: A shallow as a teaspoon mindless boob-fest, with awful design and storytelling and incredibly immature depictions of women and sexuality in general.

Thoughts? Do you disagree? Do you just think it's all in fun?

How would YOU feel if you were a game designer who had to make that game, would you begin to despise yourself? I'm sure I would...

I'm sorry, I'm just really getting tired of things like this nowadays, popping up everywhere. They just lack taste...
Well lets be honest about games like bayonetta and devil may cry n such. Think of them as the action movies of the video game genre. They are not there to increase out intelligence and make us think. They are there for us to shoot shit slash shit and beat shit up. They will not have the best story..they will not have the best music. hell devil may cry was one damn metal song for like 4 games lol. god of war killed his family and went all emo and blamed it on everyone else instead of himself like he should have..not ground breaking story's imo. you play them for a quick bit of fun and laughs then get on with your day. if u are offended by the sexuality of her and her randomness.. DONT FUCKING PLAY THE GAME! Read a review befor purchasing. its like buying a porn called back door sluts 9 and being offended when you realize its hard core porn
I will agree with your point that hack'n'slash style games are the video game version of action movies but I think your view of GOWs story is in accurate. Firstly Kratos was tricked by Aries when he killed his family, and he did take it out on himself, the opening cutscene in the first game shows Kratos trying to commit suicide because of all the deaths he is responsible for. Another scene takes place inside Kratos's mind near the end of the 3rd game where he walks past all the characters that have died because of his actions, on the outside Kratos seems just like another hack,n,slash character but as you play the games you start to see inside his psyche and you see that he is a very troubled character. The reason he takes it out on the gods and not himself is because Athena wouldn't let him die until he did. I think that GOW has a great story, not the deepest story in the world but still a great story. It has many references to themes like regret, betrayal, redemption, revenge, tragedy, etc which is very typical of Greek sagas.

Back on topic I think the OPs view of the game is very negative. I havent played it yet but from what Iv seen of Bayonetta it does seem immature and tastless but why is that a bad thing?

Made my day.

You have a successful and wealthy future ahead of you. All you need to do is "just" make a game with great gameplay and some simple and good ideas and you're sorted.

How about writing a best-selling novel after that? All it takes is a word-processor and a good idea.

Then maybe move into neurosurgery - all it takes is a steady hand, a sharp knife and a magnifier.

Honestly! How hard can it be? It's not rocket science... and all that takes is a metal tube and something that burns fast.
