Be Honest, what did you think of QTE's when you first encountered it?

I do believe it was something like "What? Press X? That's a bi-- wait, why is my character dead? Restart the level? The fuck!"

Nowadays, everyone does them wrong. Even the God of War 3 demo did it wrong!

Although Heavy Rain has done it completely right.
This, down to a tee! (Is that right, down to a tee?)

Quick time events are best done if they are not compulsory. Like in Assassin'S Creed 2, if you did them quick enough you would get a slight alternative of a scene, but it would not be nearly enough to change the gameplay, or make you die.

Whenever it was I first encountered QTEs, I thought it was going to be a short-lived gimmick. I was wrong.

"Huh? OH SHIT"
Yeah, exactly. Putting the controller down to have a sip of tea and then having to dash to respond to the input that suddenly appeared in the cutscene...not some of my finest gaming memories.

Dragon's Lair. The home version, not the arcade. I really sucked those ones up bad.

I hope somebody remembers this game. I'm getting tired of explaining it...
Never played it but I've seen the AVGN play it. I feel for you.

Except Assassins Creed 2 threw them in randomly without any warning, so when they did appear the 2 or 3 times they were used, you were completely unprepared.

Assassins Creed 2 implemented them horribly.

Yeah, the timing of them was pretty horrible, but the fact that you weren't punished for not getting them, and rewarded for getting them was a good idea. QTE's that have you dying if you don't get them are terrible. Assassin'S Creed 2 didn't position them terribly well, but not punishing you for failing to get them was a step in the right direction. (I didn't miss any of them in AC2, were they really that bad?)

I remember my first QTE was in God of War. I believe my thoughts at the time went something like:

Was good eyecandy in God of War.

.. Though annoying when they come suddenly out of nowhere like in RE4.

I only really tolerate them if they can be expected. (e.g God of War)
Speaking of which, I think God of War 2 was my first game with QTE's in it that I remember playing.

The first was Shenmue on Dreamcast I believe. I thought they were awesome. You'd never been able to control a cutscene before then. Shenmue did it rather well even then also. Many of the QTEs could be failed and the game carry on regardless.

The first quick time I encountered was in CoD3 for PS2 I believe, I was basically pinned by a Nazi and found it cool that I actually had to do something in order to survive as opposed to just letting the cutscene end.

I don't remember the first game I played a QTE, but I like them. I like the killing QTE's like in Viking: Battle for Asgard - nothing like stomping a person's face in.

I think my first one was Tomb Raider Legend. Not bad, really. Sort of exciting and cinematic. Certainly overused though.

my first experience with QTE's came from my first time playing God of War. and I thoroughly enjoyed them especially using them to wound/kill the bosses and other enemies in the game

Okay, Dragon's Lair and other FMV Games (and the like) don't really count. "Quick Time Event" suggests that it's just a quick event that comes in between other kinds of gameplay.

My first true QTEs were in Shenmue for the Dreamcast. I really liked them initially, although they got a bit annoying near the end, when you had to fight the Gollum-man.

For QTEs done right, I'd look to Mass Effect 2, with the Renegade and Paragon Interrupts. That worked well, and you weren't forced to replay parts of the game if you didn't hit a button.

The first time I encountered them was in God of War (you know, where they actually worked), and my first thought was: "Oh! That's cool."

They worked in Legend and Anniversary, too IMO.

There are certainly other games that do them right, but I can't think of any offhand.
