Be Honest, what did you think of QTE's when you first encountered it?

As of this writing, QTE is reviled by many a gamer (especially here on The Escapist, with Yahtzee's influence and all). This is not the point of the thread. Discard your pre-conceived notions about QTE's and discuss what you thought of it, when you first saw it implemented in a game you're playing.

For me, my first encounter (that I could recall off the top of my head, anyway) with QTE's was with Resident Evil 4. Now, being a moderate fan of the numbered RE's I thought the QTE's in that game was a good way of increasing the tension, that sense of dread while playing (it is an RE game, after all). I'll admit, dying mid-cutscene was pretty embarrassing, but for that game it worked perfectly. Nowhere will you feel truly safe in the game, unless you see the coolest arms merchant in recent years or an unassuming typewriter in a room.
I actually liked them when I first encountered them. "Woa I just did that with a button press !"

Yup.

Mine, too, was with resi evil 4, and I loved it irregardless of the quick time events. That's probably just because it was such a good game anyway though; I'm not sure how it would pan out with other, less good games.

i think my first encounter with QTE where in god of war (or at least thats the earliest i have memory of) and i hated them, it was annoying and stressful and i remember buying GoW2 for my brother some years later (found it in a discount bin) and they made the game unplayable for him, i was there that day to get him trough some of them but while he did fine with the puzzles and combat they just made the game impossible for him.

i really dont like them but i have later realized that GoW actually do them as right as you can.

I liked the QTE's especially those in Shenmue and SW:TFU, those were balanced and had cool results.

I've never thought of them as a bad feature, really. Sure, it may seem a bit of a cop out, but I don't emulate the hatred for QTE's that many other Escapist users seem to employ.

I was just watching the cinematic, and had set the controller down, and was like "what the hell, I want to watch the cinematic, not pay attention to this little corner of he screen."

i remember...

in god of war, there were quicktime events in the very first stage, and i sat there replaying every single part with them, because i didn't get enough time to react on them. it was tedious at best

First experience with QTEs was Shenmue on the Dreamcast for me. I enjoyed the idea at first as it seemed like a new way of getting you involved in a cutscene. After a bit it became an annoying way to make you rewatch poor acting and silly dialogue over and over for hitting the wrong button. I can't stand them most of the time now because a full decade later, games are making the same bloody mistake (a la Resident Evil 5).
That being said, I don't mind the God of War 3 style where your punishment for failing one is usually just a bit of health loss.
Wow I remember this. The one at the barber where you ARE NOT supposed to push the button.... Man I must have failed that about 6 times before it clicked.
I think the QTEs in Shenmue were what made the game memorable for me. New as they were, it wasn't too horrid when I messed up on them. I really liked how it kept the story flowing. Although, looking back, games have come a long way for that short of a period, even if QTE's haven't.

The first game I played with QTEs was Fear 2 and all you have to do is click really fast not to die. Yeah I thought it was a big bag of cack back then too.

Think my first QTE was in Tomb Raider Legend, each time they happened I wasnt ready and they were usually followed by the word "shit".

But they are starting to wear on me, getting a bit fed up with them to be honest. Especially after Bayonetta, which gave you barely enough time to react to them and probably only counted half the time

I can't even recall my first QTE. But now, as then, i still think that they are good if properly utilized, but SOME games have turned the thing into...into.......hell i don't know! Something that ha crap on it (feel free to make your own Metaphor). But the Concept itself is not bad, and it doesn't really deserve all the bad Publicity on it.

I believe the first game I played that had them in was Tomb Raider: Legend. It didn't really bother me, but they were frustrating at times, but I found them more amusing than anything else, as I would purposely get them wrong to see Lara get her head smashed by a falling 10 inch thick steel door.

You don't get comedy like THAT anymore.

You need fast reactions in a lot of games, they're just usually assigned to one particular button. So when I first played god of war I got pissed off because you had to do a long random sequence and if you failed it was insta death. I dislike that game...

I think my first QTE might have been dark cloud. It explained everything clearly before it started and I found it amazing to watch Toan smash that skeleton good.

I played them in GOW and they were brutally fantastic. The Heavy Rain demo nailed them too which is why I've pre-ordered.

"Oh, thats cool" When I found my first one, followed by a resounding "Fuck This." When I failed it for the fifth time
