Those instantly come to mind. I don't read often but I got the whole summer to start reading some things that have peaked my interest.

Favourite series? Hmmm... probably Known Space by Larry Niven. Another good one is The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper.

EDIT: And of course, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber.

Oh! And favorite book? Death in Holy Orders by P.D. James, or The Spine of the World by R. A. Salvatore

Lamb by Christopher Moore

That book changed the way I look at my religion and by taking it a lot less seriously. Also I laughed my ass off.

I'll toss a couple of pennies in.

In no particular order, the best books I've read, are:
The Dirty Dozen
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (non-fiction history)
Das Boot
The Illiad and Odyssey
The Forever War
Generation Kill
Hardtack and Coffee

As to best series:
The Foundation Series
Space Odyssey series
The George Smiley novels (pseudo-series; the books are independent and have no real continuous plot point excepting that Smiley is the main character)
Hitchhiker's Guide

I haven't read too much, but I really liked the Pendragon series. Finished it yesterday, in fact.

There are already threads [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.113868#2065545] about this.

The Lord of the Rings is probably the best book I've read; The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the best series.

John Swartzwelder's Frank Burly stories are amazingly funny. The Exploding Detective, How I Conquered Your Planet, The Time Machine Did It, all hilarious. Seriously, the most I have ever laughed out loud while reading ever.

Just for reference John Swartzwelder was a writer for the Simpson. Have a favorite episode, it was probably written by him. Bart Gets and Elephant, Homie the Clown, Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment, all those and many more are his. Genius comedy writer.

Hitchhikers, A Clockwork Orange, His Dark Materials, The Thrawn Series, and Brave New World.

Ender's Game was amazing, as was Ender in Exile. After that I felt that the series declined steadily. Xenocide wasn't originally written as an Ender novel and Children of the Mind was a foot note on Xenocide.

I'm getting ready to dive into the Ender's Shadow series next.
