I don't care if its romance as long as it has a deep story and good character design, and some action might help.
This might be what your looking for. Dont let the big boobs fool you its actually quite interesting.
It looks awesome but is there any other interesting stuff in it? Can't really tell from the intro
Its interesting cuz its like pokemon :p

Well its hard to explain, the anime takes its time introducing all the characters and then as it goes on you find out about their origins and why they are forced to fight in an all out battle royale.

Its not the best of plots but its above average really.

Angel Beats and Black Rock Shooter! Both of them have very cool concepts, excellent animation, action and for Angel Beats, comedy. I highly recommend both of them. I have not finished Angel Beats yet, I am on episode 9, but it is still awesome. Black Rock Shooter has awesome character design and art design in general, owing to Huke's sweet style. Both are superb, watch them! (Black Rock Shooter is a 50 minute OVA as of yet, but an anime is planned)

Code Geass is a must watch. Good storyline, epic plot changes in every episode, mecha, ALOT of fanservice, and very quotable.
Then for some mindless anime fun, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. Watching only once will guarantee you will not understand it.
And the mundane ones would be Naruto/Bleach. I HATE the main character in Bleach (though the recent chapter turned him more likable to my standards), but the rest of the cast are good, and the storyline's good enough,if a little cliche.

I got a few.

One Piece. (My personal favorite anime, but for god's sake avoid the first english dub)
Cowboy Bebop. (1/2 of what got me into anime in the first place)
Yu Yu Hakusho (2/2 of what got me into anime in the first place)
Death Note (But I'm guessing you've seen that)
FMA (Haven't seen Brotherhood yet, a problem I intend to fix ASAP.)
Bleach (Avoid the fillers at all costs)
Samurai Champloo
Desert Punk
Dragonball series (watch online to avoid all the 'HAAAAAA!' parts, makes it 100x better)

Space cowboys with Jazz music? How can you not love it?
why is this anime so popular? so many people like it here...

personally, i cannot bring myself to watch something with the words "bebop" in it
Top notch voice acting, strong animation, a killer score, and it does away with a lot of conventional anime tropes whilst still retaining the feel of one.

What I mean is, in a lot of long anime series, the show takes its time to explain everything to the audience. In Cowboy Bebop, it throws characters into a colorful universe and says "figure it out for yourself". Nothing is ever really explained, but you get to know the characters, and the world unravels itself through a visual, instead of narrative medium.

Plus, best intro ever.

Totally agree with Dangos post. I believe Clannad (the second season is titled Clannad After Story) is an amazingly written anime. The first season can be slow at times, but its all about the character development. This is an anime that will rip your heart out, stomp it into oblivion, then somehow revive it. As slow as the beginning is, the last story arc showed me how truly brilliant the writers are, and my standards will never be the same.
By the way, you can just quote me instead of referring to my post.

But, to make this post on topic, let me just once again recommend Clannad, and if you want a very emotional giant-robot anime, you must watch Bokurano.

My eyes tear up a little just watching that.

Naruto is a magnificent anime that goes with great depth into exploring the human condition, offers insight into Japanese culture, and has an incredibly inspiration moments.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a superb anime that has you madly clicking for the next episode.

Death Note is an excellent intellectual and highly suspenseful anime that lightly touches on the morality of killing the immoral.

Elfen Lied is a good anime. It just sort of took my breath away. I can't really describe it very well, but if you don't like blood and gore, you might not like it.

Trigun is an exciting anime with plenty of shoot outs and violence.

07 Ghost is a wonderful anime which I feel many people don't know about.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubo no Shichinin is absolutely AMAZING. It truly blew me away. It reminded me so much of going to an all male boarding school.

High School of the Dead is an absolute must. No matter what you like, you'll like this look at a zombie outbreak.

Code Geass is also a great anime, I loved the views on morality and humanity.

*edit*
Samurai Champloo

That's all I can think of for now. And I'm not that good at describing things, but I can assure that all of those listed are definitely worth watching.

3. Elfen Lied, What this show does is hard to explain. It's gory and bloody and filled with tasteless nudity but I loved it. Elfen Lied just got me so attachedto the characters that come the end I cried...
I've never even seen one episode of Elfen Lied but if it as good as everyone says it'll probally be the next series I watch, Thanks for the list
Stop right there! I bring you a different side to this "recommendation." When it comes to Anime, I've been extremely picky. I've also fallen out of the loop, so I can't do much more than bounce off of other peoples suggestions. I don't know what's hip, what's in. And in short, I don't care. :)

Elfen Lied is an anime that starts off with a lot of promise. It even kills an anime trope in the first episode. But as you watch, the show does one thing, and one thing very well. It will depress the CRAP out of you. It's story isn't told exceptionally well, its main characters seem like they belong in Love Hina, while the rest of the characters belong in Neon Genesis. As the story progresses, it's just a poorly told gore-fest.

I made it about 18 eps before I gave up. I was so determined to see what it was that made this anime so damn hot to some people. But I wasn't enjoying myself. It was a chore to watch. It was depressing, and horrible.

I recommend NOT watching Elfin Lied. It is NOT the best of the best. It is only the best at being a downer.

I don't know if you read manga, but Kuroshitsuji is definitely excellent in that department. I found all of the characters enjoyable and the plot interesting ? especially when you start wondering just what the hell is going on ? but the anime is definitely not as great as the manga. Probably because the manga is still ongoing and the anime branches off pretty significantly from the plot. I prefer the manga, but if you want, the anime isn't bad.

Trinity Blood ? It's complicated, the characters are all multi-layered and relatable and there are a number of tragedies mixed in. As difficult as it can be to follow sometimes, it's still really well done and remains one of my favorite animes and mangas. The manga is a little more faithful to the source ? light novels ? but the anime is still entertaining nonetheless.

D. Gray-Man ? The plot gets a little crazy towards the end, but in general I did enjoy the characters and the wide variety of them that there was. It's still worth trying.

Gundam SEED ? Probably the first mecha anime I ever watched, and it was a powerful one in my opinion. I really loved the characters; Destiny is weaker in this, but I still really enjoyed it.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! ? Good for the crack and fun times, but the first few episodes or so can be a pain to get through since there isn't as much happening or anything in them. But it's worth going through because it starts getting a lot more interesting as time goes on and more characters are introduced. Everyone in this series is utterly insane in their own way, and it's fun to watch the main character ? Tsuna ? grow as the series progresses.

Rurouni Kenshin ? I enjoyed it, although I definitely preferred the manga to the anime.

Tactics ? This one might be more difficult, since the fan service is aimed a little more towards females of the... of a certain variety, but the plot and the characters are still interesting enough to make it worth watching.

Tales of the Abyss ? It's an anime based off a game, but the anime does a pretty good job of standing on its own and remaining very true to its source material. Still one of my favorites ? both in terms of games and anime.

Tales of Symphonia ? Again, OVA based off a video game. It veers a lot more from the source material, but the characters are still just as enjoyable, and it's beautifully animated as well. The characters are all dynamic and unique and have their own growths over the series; it's worth watching.

Erm... I'm not really a major anime guy, but I'll still go ahead and nominate Death Note. A Japan-ophile friend of mine showed it to me to try and get me interested, and I have to admit it was an intelligent watch.

L died.

Loved the battle of wits going on and the moral issues. I'm probably not the best judge though.

Gah...I really need to watch that. I've been putting that off for quite some time now.

Um, on topic my favorite animes are Tenchi Muyo!, Kodomo No Jikan, Gantz, The Big O and Blue Sub No. 6
