Space cowboys with Jazz music? How can you not love it?
Gah...I really need to watch that. I've been putting that off for quite some time now.

Um, on topic my favorite animes are Tenchi Muyo!, Kodomo No Jikan, Gantz, The Big O and Blue Sub No. 6
I forgot Big O and FLCL. How could I do that. Lord Canti is my freaking background!

Also by Shinichirō Watanabe, Samurai Champloo also ranks as an awesome anime. (Not as good as Cowboy Bebop though).

3. Elfen Lied, What this show does is hard to explain. It's gory and bloody and filled with tasteless nudity but I loved it. Elfen Lied just got me so attachedto the characters that come the end I cried...
I've never even seen one episode of Elfen Lied but if it as good as everyone says it'll probally be the next series I watch, Thanks for the list
Stop right there! I bring you a different side to this "recommendation." When it comes to Anime, I've been extremely picky. I've also fallen out of the loop, so I can't do much more than bounce off of other peoples suggestions. I don't know what's hip, what's in. And in short, I don't care. :)

Elfen Lied is an anime that starts off with a lot of promise. It even kills an anime trope in the first episode. But as you watch, the show does one thing, and one thing very well. It will depress the CRAP out of you. It's story isn't told exceptionally well, its main characters seem like they belong in Love Hina, while the rest of the characters belong in Neon Genesis. As the story progresses, it's just a poorly told gore-fest.

I made it about 18 eps before I gave up. I was so determined to see what it was that made this anime so damn hot to some people. But I wasn't enjoying myself. It was a chore to watch. It was depressing, and horrible.

I recommend NOT watching Elfin Lied. It is NOT the best of the best. It is only the best at being a downer.
Um correct me if I misread, but elfen lied doesnt have more than 13 episodes...

Jeezus Ice Cream Nipple Tits, that's a lot of good ol' Anime on display...

My tastes keep changing as time goes on, so it's hard to recommend an Anime as being 'da best' for any length of time. Just as an individual series appeals to a particular consumer segment and carries a distinct message. Or, sometimes, it's all just flavor.

I enjoy series that break convention and pattern. Cowboy Bebop was wonderful for me.

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade was fascinating for me, even though it didn't appeal to many of my peers.

Akira is a powerful anime classic, but not an everyday show...

Grave of the Fireflies makes any meal seem like a damn banquet...

Speaking of which, most Miyazaki films, while stand-alone products, are surprisingly deep, if examined closely.

Some shows, such as Wolf's Rain, carry an inherent message that is mismarketed or mistranslated. At least that's the impression I get from fans who discuss them with me.

I've heard Gurren Lagann (sp?) is a love note to Big Mecha fans everywhere. Have yet to confirm that.

Anyway, I feel the question is moot. There is no BEST anime out there. Just something that addresses the mood you're experiencing.

I still hold One Piece as the best anime ever, but I also like Death Note, Eyeshield 21(even though I don't like football), Fruits Basket, and Case Closed.

My viewing of Elfin Lied was not what you would call "recent." :) But you're probably right. It felt like an awful long time to me though. I stopped watching when people were having some kind of military show down on the bridge, and that's where my eyes almost rolled out of their sockets. Bloody awful.

Honestly, the best anime I've seen is probably Baccano. All 16 episodes are about the characters developing into a story. It's hard to explain, but it's great. Black Heaven was pretty good too.
Oh, and if people say Hellsing, chances are they mean the OVA Hellsing Ultimate. Because the show was utter shit.

Best in terms of:
longevity.
I recommend One Piece. 12 years running and it's still nowhere near finishing. Maybe it's halfway? Maybe?
Intellectual.
Ah, so many damn intellectual anime it's almost sickening(in a good way). just......read other posts, things like ghost in the shell, FLCL, etc are all good and will make you think a but.

LOL well I enjoyed the anime I thought it was good, but the manga was way better the ending is quite touching actually. Its more deeper than the anime really.

Gundam Wing or G Gundam are both good.
Ghost in the Shell is an amazing series.
Rurouni Kenshin is a classic to me as well.
A friend had me watch Kannazuki no Miko, and I actually got really into it. It's yuri just as a warning.
I used to really like .hack//SIGN, but not so much anymore.
My top pick is Fullmetal Alchemist. I haven't seen Brotherhood, but I heard it's closer to the manga than the original FA anime was.

Actually, scratch that, Mushi-shi is the best anime out there. There is no overlaying story, but the artwork is beautiful and each episode is very well written. Mushi-shi (as well as Fullmetal Alchemist) has very good English dubbing if that's important at all.

Ohh, that was an interesting film. The riot at the start was really cool.

See, this is where I disagree-- not with the "book was better," because that rule is almost always true, and I'm betting the written version of crap is a fair bit shinier. But it's still crap to me.

I disagree with the so called "depth" that people keep going on about. When people talk about this anime, "depth" is a word that seems to be toe-tagged onto its festering corpse, following it wherever people drag it. I've seen deep movies movies (ex: Fight Club), read deep books (brain is not pulling an example at this time), and seen even deep anime (Ghost in the Shell, calling into question the real definition of what is Human, even after extreme technological and socialogical advances). They're out there. They're great to watch. But the Elfin Lied brand of depth is the yawning chasm of depression it brings.

Maybe I'm overly critical. I accept that I may be a minority (no idea the number of who else thought the anime was crap). But I judge Elfin Lied on its merits, and as a creative story writer and artist/designer myself, my eye for these elements is razor sharp. Elfin Lied flops as a story, filling in these holes with naked cat lady (fan service, I believe it's called) moments in exchange for quality. It's depth is pot-hole deep, and the one thing it excels at is the onset of depression the series dishes out.
