New York is pretty awesome. Can be a terrible place to live though because of the INSANELY high cost-of-living. Rent under $1,000 a month (per person) is hard to find. Unless you're a fan of less reputable neighborhoods. Lots to see...and it will all cost you money. There are buses (some insanely cheap) connecting New York to other large East Coast cities (Boston, DC, Philly).
You essentially just summed up London
But we have more than 1 river!
The problem with wanting to live somewhere nice close to a city is that what you save for with rent, you spend with commute. Distances are large in the US. The Catskill Mountains and an entire island (Long Island, where Brooklyn and Queens are) littered with beaches are all within a reasonably short driving distance of New York City.

Yeah the bus to DC is $20. It's ridiculous.

Well, I live in Canada, but I've been down to Seattle (nothing special, just go to Vancouver - it's a fancier Seattle), but I really liked Oregon, particularly the more rural areas. Portland was okay - once again, it's just a more boring Vancouver

If you use megabus far enough in advance, it can be $1. At least this is what various subway ads have led me to believe.

The costal states offer much more to their residents because so many people live there, but they are also the most ass backwards, at least in my opinion. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It's a very nice place to be in the summer, but currently, we are in the middle of the winter where it's not uncommon for the tempurature to be -10F (-23C) or colder. Plus, we have lots of snow on the ground. Then again, we are also one of the fittest cities in the nation with lots of bike trails and things to do outside in the summer, and even in the winter if you can stand the cold. Those who are looking for culture, we have the second biggest theatre audience (plays/musicals) behind NYC, and we have a very deep history in the music scene with lots of venues for bands to play.

Everyone is going to tell you something different, because as you clearly pointed out, America is flippin' huge and most of us haven't seen or experienced every city and what it has to offer.

Here [http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/23/most-dangerous-cities-lifestyle-real-estate-dangerous-american-cities_slide_2.html?thisspeed=25000] is a list of the 15 most dangerous cities to live in America. Incidently, where I live is one of the safest cities.
But we have wood ticks *shudder*

Having just moved here a year ago, I had the misfortune of having a rather... bad experience with those things, never having to deal with them before then.
Other than that, words of truth.

New England, We got beaches, ski mountains, and beautiful land. Here we also have very historic areas, especially Boston. Boston also has very fine restaurants, very nice views, and very beautiful parks but not in some areas.

Houston, Texas. low cost of living, strong industry (petrochemical and energy production) low crime, reasonable gun restrictions (if your inclined to try shooting sports)

Ok im an Englishman, but i've always wondered what its like to live in the USA (everythings alot bigger over there and not just a quick car journey away)

so i was wondering, where are the best places to live in the US and why? and if you like also.... where are the worst places to live?

Pictures help sway your argument!
New york, LA, and basically all of New Jersey not named either Hoboken or Newark that isnt a garbage dump.

the rest of the nation is meh.

we also have a highway containing more tarmac then is on your entire island

worst would be texas, DC, and any state that was a confederate state other then florida

some good arguments so far, im really looking for something scenic, with a large city within driving distance, but the area i'll live in must be fairly quite but a really nice place to chill in, thats the aim for me really, but if you have arguments towards city life in the U.S thats cool too, i'm just sick of town life, its all fights and shit buildings
Don't listen to stereotypes about new jersey; they only apply to some parts of the state. There are some great suburbs within 30 minutes of new york.

Also, you might want to think about pennsylvania, as from what I hear, philadelphia is a great city.

Um...I can safely California and Washington are nice places to live. California's got hot summers but surprising cold winters for such a warm state. Nice suburbs, kinda boring though. You know, everyone is just going to say where they're currently living is the best, because that's why they live there...just saying.

I hate where I live. I hate the place I go to college even more though. I live in Southampton, go to college in Shoreditch.
