Best place to visit? Las Vegas...

Best place to live? Anywhere but Las Vegas...

Vegas is the best place ive been to, I was there for 3 days and probably could handle a week there but living there? NO WAY! Your safer if you sleep on train tracks than living in Vegas. In the 3 days we were there...2 people were murdered! WTF! (they werent murdered anywhere near the strip so that rules out visitors)

Being in NE Missouri, I can honestly say it sucks. My small town is know for 3 things, a writer grew up here (Mark Twain, who later wrote a few books about here), a fat chick on the Titanic (Mooly Brown) and Colonel Potter from the TV show MASH.
Crime is low, and so is most everyone's IQ. Somehow we have a Wal*Mart Supercenter and 3 Hardee's, despite our town being less than 10,000 idiots.
But it isn't as bad as a few neighboring towns, 1000 people and 6 last names.

Helen Georgia is pretty nice particularly during the holidays.

It's pretty much a small German villa in the north Georgia mountains. Just fill in the blanks.

As for bad, I live in the ATL and it's not exactly pleasant to be here.
Are you ITP or out in suburbia?

OT: Georgia can be nice, but I agree...Atlanta itself can be kind of dangerous depending on where you go. Plus traffic is horrible. If you move out into the boonies there isn't a lot to do but you'll never really be more than about 3 or 4 hours away from the city at the most.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want amazing nightlife you hit New York City, Chicago, Las Vegas (especially Las Vegas--it's called America's Playground for a reason).

If you're looking for amazing beaches, go to Florida--it's in the south but with northern culture. If you want amazing food (and southern food--soul food--is amazing) go to Alabama, Georgia. Go to the desert states like New Mexico and Arizona for awesome geography, deserts and a blend of Mexican/American/Native American culture.

If you want thick forests and mountains, go further west; Oregon and Washington are beautiful states. Colorado is absolutely mind-blowing (and its where all the rich people go to ski).

The midwest has tons of wide open spaces and farming communities, smaller cities.

But yeah, you definitely can't just walk anywhere. That amazed me when I was talking to one of my English friends--she can walk to get most anything she needs. Here, everything is really spread out so we all drive. And we have an extensive highway/interstate driving system. Wide roads with multiple lanes that you can go about 80mph on. (But the US is so big that, even going on these interstates; if I left my place in northern Indiana and drove to the coast of Alabama, it takes about 15 hours of straight driving. Which is why Americans do not cringe from long drives. We are very used to it.)

And our public transpo system is actually quite poor, unless you live in a big city.

Ok im an Englishman, but i've always wondered what its like to live in the USA (everythings alot bigger over there and not just a quick car journey away)

so i was wondering, where are the best places to live in the US and why? and if you like also.... where are the worst places to live?

Pictures help sway your argument!
That's kind of a loaded question, my friend--it all depends on what you're looking for. If you enjoy the urban lifestyle, then a large city such as New York or Boston (or Houston if you want warmer weather) would suit you well.

I myself prefer living about fifteen miles outside of Evanston, Wyoming, because of the considerably smaller population--I enjoy nature and open spaces rather than a large amount of people packed together.

Minnesota, such a beautiful state... and the only one I've been to besides North Dakota and Montana.

I love California, personally. It gets a lot of crap from people who live in other states, but honestly it's mostly just generalizing. It's a big state with a lot of diversity, though unfortunately almost everyone seems to think that the SoCal/OC/Hollywood culture defines the entire place (it doesn't, trust me). I think most of SoCal is kinda crappy save San Diego, but they get some really nice weather, those lucky bastards.

The Midwest is also really nice, and New England can be as well. Oregon and Washington have some absolutely beautiful sections of coastline, so if you want to see some nice scenery I'd recommend going there. Alaska has some great wilderness, but...the people there can be kinda weird sometimes. Texas can be really hit-or-miss, and it's a lot more enjoyable when you're with someone who's a native Texan.

Honestly the only way to really find any of this out is to see for yourself whenever you get the chance. Not only are most posters going to be biased (myself included), but every foreigner I've met has said that their visit here was not at all how they imagined it would be (in a good way). As you said, it's a large country and the people and cultures differ almost everywhere.

California. Specifically the Bay Area. San Francisco, and San Jose. We have the Silicon Valley. That means you could visit Apple, NASA, EA, Microsoft, Google, Capcom, Lucasarts, and the list goes on and on.

+1 for New Hampshire. The people are great, and so are the scenery and historical sites. The cities aren't overwhelming (not uncommon for bears to walk through Manchester, NH..) No sales tax for the most part. Oh and we also get all four seasons, though sometimes they all happen in the same week.

BTW, as far as I know Rochester, NY is named after Nathaniel Rochester. I'm sure his name came from the original Rochester, but I'd just like to point out the indirection there.

Washington DC is a great place to visit, especially if you like museums and as long as you stick to the touristy areas it?s very safe. But clearly the best place to live in the US is wherever this was filmed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJzbIt37FVo (TV gets lynched) look how much fun they are having!

Sounds like Wales actually, but less rainy and hotter.

Anyway, even though I've never actually been there, just reading, hearing and seeing things about New York makes me want to go there pretty badly.
