any of the Scarecrow encounters in Batman: Arkham Asylum...or (to go really old-school on ya) the end of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver...walking through the time streams and getting to see the "visions" of what was to come...total "what the hell"-ege!

The opening of Metal Gear Solid comes to mind. Must of played that part hundreds of times over and over. Sneaking into the base and seeing what skills Snake has! I think having the demo helped it all, as you could only play that part and the demo would end once you got inside.

And in Resident Evil 2 - getting inside the police department for the first time and the build-up to the licker.

The train level in Splinter Cell 2. It's a very intense level of stealth seeing as the whole level is really narrow and straight.

Agreed, And the first time I went through I didn't even know you could use Flashbangs, it was like a Frictional Games game, I felt defenceless as a kitten in the land of Hell-hounds, dodging ghostly psychos leftrightncenter...

Although Half-Life's Blast Pit comes a close second for me, running around fixing a rocket booster to fry an alien hydra-beast? Pretty damn classic...

The Truth and Reconciliation from Halo 1; specifically the approach to the ship with the sniper rifle that had a crazy obscene amount of ammo. At night. With all your marine buddies. And possibly a co-op friend.

There was much awesomeness to be had.

The final mission in Mass Effect 2. Intense gunfights, a terrifying boss and the knowledge that one bad decision could get someone killed... Now that's good design.

The first mission from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Storming a tanker ship has never been so intense and satisfying.

I forgot to mention this. Man, I was so scared I'd make the wrong decision and lose a team leader (my heart stopped when Jacob, my team leader both times, got hit once but ended up not dying... PHEW).

You guys are lucky. I lost the doctor, Grunt and Jack.
Well, at least Tali made it through

The final mission of Assassin's Creed 2. I'm not going to spoil it, but I will say that it makes you feel like a real Assassin. Infiltrate and kill, baby.
Hardly spoilers since its been out a year, but come on loudly gutting all the guards on the wall, jumping on the pope and then having a magic item showdown - not very assassinish

I'd say first and sniper levels of CoD4 - THOSE were special forces levels that made you feel superior on the boat and fragile in the sniper level

And recent level I've enjoyed has to be the Deadpool level from Spiderman:Shattered Dimensions - why? It's funny as hell and a lot of fun to play

Ah yes, another level I complety forgot. I hated it on my first run, because I kinda...got lost inside :) But on my second run it was really interesting.

I really like the part when you and a squad of Combine are fighting one of those... bug things. You know, the ones that charge towards you.

I have a few contenders.

All ghillied up is great, as is the level after when you need to fight at the ferris wheel.

Pripyat in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Shadow of Chernobyl, the whole city pretty much. Filled with enemies, simply amazing.

The swamps from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Clear sky are also outstanding. It's a vast area but the reeds make it quite claustrophobic.

The whole chapter from Metal Gear Solid 4 when you return to Shadow Moses, stirred a lot of emotion and ended with a giant mech battle, what's not to like?

And most of the underground portions of all the other Stalker games.

And the Reds vs. Nazis bridge in Metro.

Oh yeah, best level on Halo 1.

I remember, when I played it for the first time. I restarted the level 6 times just to play the beginning of the mission again :)
