uhmmm...what about brutal legend? if you're into that kind of thing, its epic.
OMG YES! That game's soundtrack is certainly notable for having the largest collection of metal, a genre of music mostly ignored in video games. Not even all the Guitar Hero's put together can come close.
Speaking of which, lots of games sound so awesome when done in metal, I am thinking specifically of Metriod Metal. Look it up, you might be surprised!

The MGS2 theme tune that played during the intro.

The piano music in FFX, think it was called Zanarkand (seen someones already posted). And I'll admit that I enjoyed the FFXIII trailer with the Leona Lewis song.

Morrowind and Oblivion had really great ones too.

Might as well throw my own opinion into this topic (by the way, these are in no particular order):

-"Hope Runs Deep" (Gears of War 2): If this song doesn't scream 'epic', I don't know what does.
-"With Sympathy" (Gears of War 2): This track has got to be one of the most gripping and tragic pieces of music I've heard in a long time, at least from a video game
-"Halo Choir Theme" (All Halo games): The vocal theme heard on the menu of all 3 Halo games (not counting ODST) has become the musical symbol of the series. Personally I prefer the Halo 2 variant.
-"Greatest Journey" (Halo 3): Gets both ends of the spectrum; a slow, sad, truly moving segment, and one of favourite renditions of the Halo theme for the rest of it.
-"Hyrule Theme" (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess): Just plain epic, enough said.

Well there's 5 tracks of note, and I'll leave it at that. but as one final note, I'll let people know that I prefer the epic orchestra music as opposed to the synthetic, electronic music of older games, so don't expect anything pre-2000 on my lists.

Might you consider seeking out orchestral remixes of older games? They are really good, and I'd hate for someone to miss out.

THE FREAKING MOON THEME?!?
I hope you mean The Final Hour. I love that one.

However, my favourite has to go to Bloody Tears. Only song I've ever seen that is good in every version.
Oh no, I MEANT the Moon Theme. Go listen to it if you haven't heard it, it's from the Ducktales game on the NES and is hands down got to be the best song on the NES.
Also someone mentioned Gerudo valley, and Chrono Trigger (Black Wind Blows...love it!), this is why I couldn't make a list, I'd forget something and I'd feel bad!
*EDIT* Is that The Final Hour from Onimusha 2? Also, Castlevania IV soundtrack rocks my socks!
Well, you should have said so! That track was awesome! In the words of Brental floss:
"This sould have been the ending credits theme,
It's a soaring song, flying high, like a dream."

Agreed. The reason I mentioned it twice was because I consider it to be THE defining song of the NES. It starts out slow and mellow and quickly kicks into gear into a rockin' tune! Reminds me a lot of the title theme from Mega Man 2. But then, Capcom music has always been iconic.

I barely even notice the music in a game. You could take music of the industry and I wouldn't mind. That being said good music shouldn't be noticed.

Some of my favourites.

Any of the explore tracks from Morrowind

The combat simulator music from Perfect Dark. Great to get into a killing mood!

The intro to MGS2. Heard this one played live by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Video Games Live. The hairs all down my arms and neck were standing on end!

I don't really think there is any one "best gaming music", because such a thing is incredibly subjective. For example, many have mentioned Still Alive from Portal, yet I absolutely loathe that song. Meanwhile I praise the other piece of the Portal soundtrack which go largely unnoticed by others. So I guess this thread is essentially a "favorite game music" thread, and I will respond appropriately. Though personally I don't even have a single piece of favorite gaming music since there are so many different ones that mean different things to me.

However this is one of my personal favorites. It's a very immersive piece from both of the Half-Life games. During the first game it played during the tram ride into the heart of the facility. The time at which nothing was going wrong and you may have forgotten that the game was supposed to be about a physicist bludgeoning aliens to death with a crowbar. It really eased you into the game and helped you to assume the role of Gordon Freeman. In the second game, it plays when you acquire the gravity gun in the scrap yard with Alex. And that's what I find to be special about this song. During both games, it plays in the only two area that could truly be considered "safe". It invokes a feeling of calmness that is experienced exclusively in these two areas, a time in which you weren't being told to hurry along to the next destination. The music is used to create a very special moment of nostalgia for the player as they think back to the very beginning of it all.

The area this song plays in is very different from the above. In Half-Life, this song plays inside a teleporation room in Xen, while in Half-Life 2 it plays in the flooded basement of Nova Prospekt. Despite both of these areas being in the heart of enemy territory, this song also invokes a feeling of calmness. You know that you are still in danger, yet these places feel relatively safe. A calm during the middle of the storm.

These two songs invoke feelings that contrast with the overall oppressive feeling of the rest of the game, hence why they are memorable to me. This at least how I felt when listening to them. I imagine people had different responses to these songs than I did.

Ever heard of the Timesplitters series? The music for those games was godly.
