Best wizard in fiction? I didn't know there were non-fictional ones...

Anyway, I'd say Gandalf, for me the archetype that Dumbledore was based on. Kindly old man, but dangerous when necessary.
My thoughts exactly.

I've always been a Dresden guy myself. Especially after he became the Winter Knight. Though tbh, I think Cowl could probably take him, at least at this point in the series

Still 10 more books and a trillogy after that to find out. Cowl may already of hit his peak where as Harry is only 38-39 which is really young for a wizard so he still has about 100 years before he hits his peak and he is already more powerful than most.

Boris Ignatievich (aka Geser). Regional director of the Night Watch in Moscow.

Some of these other wizards may have power, a few may even have some slight measure of cunning, but Geser is always five steps ahead of the competition, has immense personal power, and for those very few situations where his magic or manipulation won't do the trick, he has access to the Russian nuclear arsenal.

I second Dresden.

My second favorite series of books ever, with the first being Discworld.
In a magical duel, Rincewind would best both Dresden and Gandalf. They'd never be able to catch him, and that's before the Luggage got involved.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, *****.

Well, that this if you want 110% wizard.

Kvothe the Arcane, the Bloodless, the Kingkiller, Meadre, Sixstring... ∞ if you want awesome person who also happen to know magic very well.
^ this guy wins. /thread

Dumbledore is by far the most powerful wizard in fiction, let's be honest, gandalf doesn't do much magic. he sets some pine-cones on fire and makes beams of light that may or may not cause damage to what they hit. Not that impressive. He's more of a facilitator than a wizard, his main awesomeness comes from bringing people together to work for the same cause.
Gandalf is only supposed to use his true power in times of great danger for himself. Hence how he was able to defeat the Balrog. Gandalf is not really even a wizard though, he is a Maiar (one of the lesser Gods from Valinor) who takes the form of a man when he comes to Middle Earth. The Balrog was also one of these Maiar. So Gandalf basically goes and kills another demi-god. Ya no big deal.
Honestly I believe the fight would go something like this" Dumbledore shoots all kinds of super powerful spells at Gandalf. When the smoke clears Gandalf is seen standing safely inside a spell shield (like the one he uses against the Balrog). Gandalf then says "Dumbledore, your mind is broken." Dumbledore becomes insane and is no longer able to use magic.

Raistlin Majere, of course. If you don't have hourglass eyes, you're no wizard. Yes, it's a petty reason, but damnit it makes him cool.

I don't know if he would actually count as a wizard but Rand Al'Thor (The Wheel of Time series) is shown to be able to slaughter hundreds of thousands and just plain destroy the world if he felt like it.
I will second this nomination. As well as having the perfect fantasy background (farmboy leaves home to save the world), as the Dragon Reborn he is the single most powerful mortal in the WoT. In the most recent book, he went so far as to decimate an entire army of trollocs single-handedly, and that is without his ter'angreal that lets him draw even more of the power thru the most powerful sa'angreal there is.

All the armies, leaders, aes sedai, ashaman and what have you have little purpose in the end except to keep the enemies occupied while Rand gets on with the business. He's also an interesting character. Deeply flawed, emotionally frayed and in love with three different women. He's a conquerer of nations, a destroyer of armies and a rural farmboy.

I cannot deside between Gandalf or Harry Dresden.
Is this really a contest? It's Rincewind from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

I mean, honestly.

Fucking ninja'd!
Exactly, He's so powerful, he has a wooden box eat his enemies for him, AND press his laundry.

Either (Quick)Ben Aedephon Delat or Tayschrenn from the Malazan book of the fallen. Either has faced down a hundred wizards and warlocks and a few gods both. I could say Kellanved, the malazan emperor, but he has ascended to godhood, so that wouldn't be fair

I'm going to go with Zordon. Even though he was trapped in an alternate dimension, he was still awesome. I still wait for the day a disembodied head gives me dinosaur powers and a mechanical Tyrannosaurus.

Sauron.
Even mighty Gandalf trembled when Big "S" name was spoken. And yea, he is a wizard.

Also : Bigby. Dem Fistz of Fury and their unconventional usage... :)
Mordenkainen had more variety.
Variety doesn't ensure superiority. ;)
Proof ? Linux vs Windows. Gaiman vs Tolkien. Gurps vs D&D. And so on, and so on... :)

Why do you lie to us? Wizards aren't fiction. They're real, they're all just hiding from us because they're afraid of us, much like the aliens.

OT: I dunno, I haven't read that much about wizards so I don't really know half of the ones mentioned here, but I'm just gonna say Merlin.
