I wouldn't say anything bad about Dumbledore or Gandalf anyway, because I do love those characters. But in my opinion, I'm biased as he is my favourite ever character, Harry Dresden is the best wizard.

My wizard in D&D has my vote.

He's the only wizard that I know of that has not only established his own nation, but has taken out a half-dozen mindflayers with a single spell, escape an exploding airship while blasting through pirates, only to loot the ship later underwater... Well, after taking out a nearby megalodon with a lightning bolt.

Don't get me wrong, Gandalf's pretty cool, but he didn't do any of that...

And I mean real wizards here not Harry bloody Potter. Althrough by best I do not mean most powerful Harry Potter is an embarrassment to wizards. he knew what 5, 6 spells at most. How crap is that.

Whoa whoa whoa, hang on just a minute! Gandalf doesn't really use that much magic either, in fact I remember reading something about Tolkien saying that he didn't want Gandalf to be cliche and so used his magic sparingly. I mean think about it, aside from his fight with the Balrog he only really uses magic to light up places and throw people, oh and let's not forget making fireworks.

Not that I'm criticising him, in fact my vote would go to Gandalf as well, but dismissing Harry Potter because he doesn't use enough magic is just absurd. He has about a dozen spells that he uses regularly and more that he only uses once or so. He can also fly a broomstick and he mixes potions. Despite being a teenager he's more of a traditional wizard than most of the people listed on this thread.

Gavin Guile from the Black Prism. IN those books magic comes from the light spectrum, and most people can only control one or two colors. Gavin is the Prism, and can control every single color in the spectrum and does some crazy shit.

Gaborn val Orden from the Runelords series. He's the fucking earth king and saves the world from a crazy powerful army of subterranean behemoths AND a psycho conqueror who is nigh-unkillable.

Everyone else is kind of a puss, except for Gandalf. I like how his power is implied, but rarely used.
