I'm very surprised that there hasn't been much technical Death Metal up to this point. I actually find technical death metal to be more heavy than brutal death metal. Why? Don't ask, just listen.

Probably my favourite tech death band. Truthfully a crossover of technical and brutal death metal.
Another good one.

If you know what my avatar's from, you'll know that I love grindcore. As you can guess, Nasum was my favourite grindcore band. Nasum is one of the few bands that can really get my heart pumping while simultaneously relaxing me; no one song can really encompass what I love about Nasum.

This band's an excellent homage to Nasum.

Honorable mention: though not in the same class as the other bands I listed, just how heavy can you make power metal? Here's how heavy.

"To A Breathless Oblivion" - The Black Dahlia Murder (Or anything by them, really.)"Alptraumsong" - We Butter The Bread With Butter (Or just about everything by them too.)

To which I reply:

Well played.

Wow, I've never heard of these guys before. Actually, I've never heard anything quite like this and am not sure what to call it, but it's good.

If we're trending toward dark metal/dark wave, this is one of my favorites by Aphotic:

Now that you mention it, Nile has been considerably more technical with their latest two albums, I hadn't really ever considered them tech death because I've been following them since Black Seeds of Vengeance, and I didn't particularly like Ithyphallic, but TWTGD is one of their more solid and profoundly excellent releases.

When it comes to heavy tech, there is no denying Necrophagist:

I love Necrophagist. Brutal death metal can't touch this stuff, no matter how hard they try.

You know, as much as I rage against core, and oh I do me some raging, neither one of those tracks was terribly difficult to listen to, even as ridiculous as we butter the bread with butter, and, props because they were both pretty heavy songs.

i will be the first to say I'm slightly out of my element here but this is the heaviest stuff I listen too. Mjolnir07 really seems to know what he's doing so uhh listen to him.
For my contribution
Ehh maybe not the heaviest and as aleady stated I defer to Mjolnir in all matters "Heavy as all shit metal"

I don't particularly care for SYL but I have some respect for Devin Townsend. Granted I don't actually like any of his music, but there is no denying his talent.

If you have really good speakers or headphones, I recommend using those and turning the volume most (or all) the way up.
while that IS very good music, that's... not really on topic with the thread. but yes, baroque music is badass >:)

to all other metalheads who dont respect the classics, these are our roots. you gotta respect your roots.

I <3 Thyrfing, they're a good example of mid-extreme not quite heavy but definitely awesome. They're exactly what I look for in viking metal, especially the rough vocal style. At 1:45 there's this bitchin chorus that sounds like a bunch of vikings singing a marching chant.

The Black Dahlia Murder is actually just death metal, not core.

But yeah, it's pretty easy to snag some heavy songs when you're listening to that stuff. :D

I've always considered heaviness and brutality as separate qualities, I'm a bit surprised how many people are conflating them.

(Not that I'm saying you're wrong to do so, just that it is different than my expectation.)

I have a very strong urge to just place loud annoying white sound in here... you can't top that in the "heavy" class ;).

[sub]I don't diss metal, I have just kinda grown out of it and now it doesn't cause any emotions in me... unless it's bad bad baaaaaad metal[/sub]

Oh, if you're gonna go there, the Power Rangers theme needs to be added to this thread, too.

It is one of my goals in life to play this song live in front of a crowd of aging 90's kids.

That is the "funeral" variant of doom metal, good sir.

Other bands in the same vein include Skepticism, Shape of Despair, and Torture Wheel.

Also, "drone doom". Can't get much slower than this. :D
