Is it like an an episodic game? Interactive liniar cartoon with preset characters you help get from point A to point B with a few choices that realy don't effect what happens in the game.

No. Beside, if it wasn't for DLC, i wouldn't call Fallout 3 a RPG.
BioWare didn't make Fallout 3. Your thinking of Bethesda. BioWare made Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Baldur's gate, KotOR and the like. And be advised, your poor grammar and spelling, combined with your aggressive tone come off as VERY fanboyish. Really doesn't help your argument.
First, hasn't it occurred to you that maybe i don't write or speak English on a regular basis? Contrary to many, i use a dictionary to correct my errors but it can't do all the work. Still i got good grade and it isn't as horrible as you might suggest.
Second, you miss the point like a Stormtroopers miss they're target. Fallout has a custom character creation tool which is what that BioWare guy said was just what was needed to make a rpg. But now that you mention it, isn't Baldur Gate - Dark Alliance for ps2 a rpg? No, because you can't create your character so... that's dumb!
Third, i'm piss because i believe that there people that are bright enough not to fall into such a trap and give BioWare what they want. What do they want? Being on everyone mind like a commercial break that is repeated until it's burrow into your mind. What they achieved? A forum of discussion filled with people arguing for what a guy said. Some being more dick than other.(not you Gray Sock... not in your quote, you wasn't) You get it now?

He raises a very good point.

JPG would be better.

Also there's plenty of role play in Mass Effect to though that say there isn't. To say theyre just about stats? Football games have stats. Are football games now RPGs?
Manipulatable stats that effect the ability of your character. Also, I wouldn't identify RPGs under the terms of the moral choice system that Bioware incorporates into their games because Bioshock, Infamous and Heavy Rain all had decisions that effected the game (or atleast the ending in Bioshock) but I wouldn't consider those RPGs.

Since when do you have to create characters for RPG's? Since when do you have to create characters in RPG's? The Japanese made RPG's before westerners ever did, so this is essentially bullshit.

There's no such thing as a true RPG video game.

Simply put it's impossible to create a video game that's like the paper & pencil RPGs of yore.

For me the 'role' part of an RPG is how connected you feel to your protagonist.

I don't see how you're meant to be more connected to a character that can only answer in single sentences than a fully planned protagonist with a detailed backstory, complete characterisation and a personality that develops throughout the game just because you designed the former's face. And the plot choices you make are either the 'nice' ones or the 'mean' ones depending on what ending/bonuses you want to get.

Think of it like this - do you feel more connected to the main character of an epic novel or a choose-your-own-adventure storybook?

Of course, FF13 was like the prologue to an epic novel followed by a very pretty flick-book.

Isn't it the same case with Diablo? All the characters you can play with are already created and there are no choices to be made by the players. But it's still considered an RPG. Same with Zelda.

I don't know... I always considered a game an RPG as long as you can level up at your own pace, have an inventory stuffed full of objects, and a reasonably open world to explore. And maybe armor you can switch around that changes the way you look.
You can choose any one from a rather big pool of classes. Those have 3 different talenttrees which again cjhange your playstyle.
Its more of an rpg than FF 13, since you can choose what your character can do and what not.
But its called an action rpg not just an rpg like ff13.

To me, the term RPG has become a lot like the term "indie" music... you can practically apply it to anything, and is usually first bandied about by the creator.

"Oh, we allow some customization and inventory options, making the game more like an RPG"
"My music doesnt have a defined genre so it falls into the "indie" category"

As for Final Fantasy XIII, its as far from "RPG" as i think you can get in video gaming. There is no stats, the customization options are on par with Saints Row 2: Switching weapons, thats about it.

Sure I can put some points into the world's most linear skill progression tree, but it's not like I can really modify my characters to fit specific skill-sets. It's essentially a loooooong progression unlock system. Want Fire? you'll get it eventually, after about 4 wasted crystal nodes that modify pointless stats like hp increases that I might not want or need.

But worst of all, in FF XIII you aren't playing a role, you control an increasingly random collection of characters through very specific story moments... you can't even choose your own party until far too late in the game, so until then, you are forced to utilize people with skills you wouldn't probably want.. I hated Hope. Given an option I never EVER wouldhave used him. I'd have had a constant party consisting of Snow, Frost, and Sasz. maybe vanille or lightning here and there.

You can't even modify their weapons.. you get stuck with whatever archetype the game wants you to have.

Bioware's Daniel Erickson:
Well, before I address the main point I just want to take a slightly more controversial route: You can put a 'J' in front of it, but it's not an RPG. You don't make any choices, you don't create a character, you don't live your character... I don't know what those are - adventure games maybe? But they're not RPG's."

I tend to agree but that's my opinion.
Wasn't it the Japanese who came UP with the first RPG's? (video game wise)

EDIT: Okay....thanks to everyone for clearing that up for me
You know... Taking tabletop RPG, simplefy it and put it into a game isent really that great a feat :/

So you expect them to create a perfectly liveable world that you can go to in escape of the real world? You are comparing apples to oranges. I couldn't do one small thing that I wanted to in a game, therefore, the game is the same as another game with a glaring lack of something that by definition is the hallmark of an RPG. Your logic is dumbfounding and just shows that you are only here to nitpick a tiny thing Bioware shunned you on.
If real RPGs are oranges and computer RPGs are apples then perhaps they should not share a name?

What a strange thing for him to say. After all, if it has whiskers, four legs and goes 'meow' it's still a cat, not matter what you call it, so I'm not really sure what he's trying to get at here - is he trying to say that (the genre formally known as) JRPGs are inferior?

Regardless, most games call you to play a 'role' of some sort, so perhaps the whole terminology we apply to games is outdated. However, it's still a convenient way of labelling things so we know broadly what a product is going to be like.

To be fair neither is Mass Effect. Mass Effect 2 is a JRPG in disguise.
Mass Effect is totally an RPG, notice all the dialogue choices, guns, and level up system? And there is no way in hell Mass Effect 2 is a JRPG. It's more of a cover-based shooter/RPG hybrid, if anything. FF13 is angst-fulled turn-based combat.
