Do we really need another "I can't figure out how fighting games work" thread?
What we need even less of is people who post in threads without reading the OP.

Well written old boy. Well written!

Sorry. I dont have anything constructive to say because I sampled BlazBlue for about 30mins at a friends and I could never pick it up in a store again. It was just waaaay tooooo much for a casual fighting-gamer and Soul Calibur fan like me to handle.

You know whats great about bLAZBLUE? Its just like Guilty Gear, without the huge backstory. I can playing, remark that some chick is attractive, without being told its actually a dude.

The rapid cancel isn't situational to the move used at all. It can cancel any attack on hit or block. Compared to FADCs or FRCs it's super simple to use.

And you hardly need any tutorials to play the game. Just learn The high damage combos for your character. The rest of the stuff just comes from experience while playing.

There is a robot character: Tager.

I personally didn't have any more trouble with the controls than any other fighter I have played (which is no longer an issue, thank you arcade stick!). As for the characters, barring the story which gives you the opportunity to actually get to know them, at first glance they may seem to be a bit generic. However, as far as I understand almost every single one of them is supposed to be a parody (for lack of a better word) of an anime archetype and once you actually start to learn their move-sets you understand how diverse the cast really is.

Since we're on the topic of BlazBlue I feel guilty that I have neglected the game for months... it doesn't help that MvC3 is coming out :(

I don't hate street fighter, but i could never really get into it. Neither do i like the character designs, nor the fact that many of the characters use the same movesets.[/quote]

Lesee....called upon to defend Capcom's charachterization....um, yeah after Capcom made RE5 a game I can't play I'll pass on that other than to point out that one of their most obvious parody characters is E. Honda who is Japanese. Which I realize does not one thing to forgive T. Hawk and Cammy (since as we all know nothing says "stuffy brit" like goin' commando) ....but hey, at least Capcom are equal opportunity annoyers.

I think I may be misunderstanding you, or just misinformed about movesets though. I thought Street Fighter pretty much defined the basic palette of Quarter circles back and foward, charge moves, 360's. Isn't that also the move list used by Continuum Shift?

Everyone IS gay for Bridget, after all. I find the backstory and story of BlazBlue to be much harder to follow than the Guilty Gear games, myself.

Different strokes. Blazblue is my personal favorite fighting game (outside of the Smash Bros. series, because yes, I count them). I'm good at it, to the point that I bought the $120 fight stick.

I also never had to sit through any of the tutorials to pick up and play for most of the characters (Hakuman and Jin main right here). For three of them (Hazama, Carl, and Rachel), I did, but everyone else I learned through perseverance and online play. And the characters aren't as generic as first glance (admittedly) makes them look. Once you make your way through the ridiculous story (its an anime style fighting game. That poor story never stood a chance), you realize that a lot of the characters are actually really detailed and unique.

I could go into great detail about the game, but I've read through the comments and it seems everyone else has done a very good job of saying what I'd say. Again, different strokes. Can't expect to like every fighter, right?

In Blazblue, I found a few characters I thought I could play as, but for personal reasons, I didn't want to play as any of them. Would I like to play as the generic anime pretty-boy with a sword? What about the generic anime pretty-boy with white hair and a dark past? What about the generic lolita goth who looks like she robbed a Hot Topic store? The catgirl? The androgynous little kid with a puppet or that girl with the guns from Melty Blood? None. I didn't want to play as any of these. I asked myself "Where are all the cool characters!? Where are the badass cops? Where are the robots, the kangaroos or the American stereotypes?" So I settled for the ninja guy, who was designed by someone who has been watching too much Naruto. Yes, the only tolerable character, is a Naruto reject
There are three 'badass cops' (more like solders) Jin 'generic anime pretty-boy with a sword' Noel 'that girl with the guns from Melty Blood' (note: creators liked Melty Blood) And Tsubaki who someone recomended two you already.

There are also two Robots Tager and Lambda/Nu (depending on you're version).

The American stereotypes? Tager is supposed to look like a Comic-book character.

And Bang 'a Naruto reject' is a parody of shonen anime characters like Naruto.

Also there is an enjoyable story mode, that I admit plays out like a cliched anime, but has a LOT more depth and is presented better than most fighting game stories.

Oh and the 'cool characters' you are looking for. There is a Werewolf, a Robot Samurai, No Face from spirited away, and Evil snake Micheal Jackson.

TL;DR: 'I don't know Jack Shit about the characters but I'm going to complain about them.'

The things in the tutorials are not advanced, they're just basics. Truly advanced things are learned by ages of experience, the fact that you can't tell the two apart shows you're not that serious or deeply into those types of games as you think you are.

The characters rock, you just need to actually play the extremely developed storymode to understand them and not just go by appearances. Bang is not Naruto btw, he's kamen rider parody combined with Kamina.

Blazblue does a great deal to simplify complex mechanics since before that we had guilty gear which is much more difficult and complex.

Lastly, that whole complaint about not being to attack if you're not holding forward is just...odd...every fighter in existence has at least some directional inputs like that...even in brawl you get different moves from neutral to forward. It really just seems you're way out of your league here and don't know what you're doing at all.

Wow. People who like fighting games hate Street Fighter?? The literal Mother of fighting games?? If it's not to your tastes, that's fine, but why bother hating it? Just don't waste your own energy on it.
I don't. The only Street Fighter I can stand these days is SF3, but I don't usually bring that up.

I'm too busy playing Melty Blood and Arcana Heart.

I don't hate any fighters either, i like some more than others.

Btw, i just saw some more posts from the TC and i figured out something. He is playing the game on the 360 and is using the 360 controller. That is a guaranteed way of not having a good time with Blazblue right there.

Maybe give the ps3 version a go, the community is superior and the controller is quite better. (you don't seem the type to go for arcade sticks but if you do it's the best for sure)

Honestly, the only thing that annoyed me about BlazBlue was the Xbox's frustrating D-pad. And they have giant cat-umbrellas at Hot Topic?

Actually, the only thing that I can fault the game for is that to get 100% completion you need to win and lose every story mode fight. It's just kind of unnecessary. Is it the same in Continuum Shift?

Makers of Guilty Gear lost the rights to Guilty Gear made Blaz Blue. Pretty interesting back stories that they gave the characters. Fighting is easy to get into and has a decent learning curve. Only reason I don't really play it is because I am not very good at fighting games. Other than that its pretty good for a fighting game.

Nope, they fixed that, they even have a very funny ingame segment to tell you all about it :p.

That's why I use the analog stick on my controller. Works wonders for me. I've never been able to use a D-pad in a fighting game.

Cool, in that case I might have to get ahold of it.

Thanks for reminding me about this franchise, OP.
