aside from the fact that i think the beauty of a book is that you can create all the characters and story in your mind and that a game would completely destroy that in ways a film could only dream of...

open world rpg:
grand theft horse : discworld. and i want every voice part to be given to tony robinson (baldrick from blackadder, also narrates the terry pratchet audiocassetts).

does this thread make anyone else remember "bruce coville's: my teacher is an alien?"

i'll second ender's game, but i think that the assassin books (havent read the fool ones) would end up being pretty crap. "do favours for patience, learn how to write, watch yourself helpless as regal hits you in the face, wash down the horses" sounds like a minigame-fest where the game would probably be poorly done anyway.

although, now thinking about it, if you set it about another character, say a child born with "old blood" and made it an open world sort of game... but that would require so much work i can't see it ever happening, let alone be well executed.

Anything by peter f. hamilton specifically the commonwealth saga would be awesome.
You sir are a Legend.

Can't wait for the third in the void trilogy.

Also, Ontopic, "The Witcher" was based off an awesome book-More games should take this idea because the storyline is usually already made for them, The dimwitted story creationists of today would no longer have to think too hard. Disagree with that sentance? Think about the amount of sequals we're seeing nowdays. Is it a case of the public not wanting anything new, or the devs. not being able to think about inviting stories.

In contribution to the thread, Any of the Richard Morgan series (Broken Angels, Woken Furies, Market Forces, Altered Carbon), Any of the Void Trilogy (or any of Richard F Hamiltons works).
The universe has already been setup, The pieces are ready to be played however the game simply isn't here.

Also to think about-If Grim Fandango had a book, would you read it?
Absolutely if we could some how get a game with kovacs in it past the censors... Silly having the best beaches punishment (i live in australia).

I WOULD say a book, but as we learn from film and game cross overs, THEY DON'T WORK. I am too afraid my favorite books would be burnt before my eyes. keep them seperate please!
The Hobbit was a pretty good game.

Matthew Reilly. probably scarecrow of one with shane schofield in it. good 3rd person shooter-adventure material. prolly needs good quicktime events
*Agrees wholeheartedly*

Though I should tell you there is a game which many claim has ripped off the story of Scarecrow, and after reading the plot synopsis of the game I'd have to say it certainly seems to be the case.

And I would like a game based on the Spook's Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney. Its set in England (not sure about the century) and is about a boy who starts an apprenticeship with the county spook (a spook being someone who exercises ghosts, demons and witches among other things).

It'd just make an interesting setting and the gameplay could potentially be quite unique, fighting off hordes of witches with no more than handfuls of salt, iron filings your staff and your wits.

Caiaphas Cain: HERO OF THE IMPERIUM. I could see how it could be a very good game, but also a very bad one.

American Gods and Hithciker's Guide to the Galaxy (the book's a lot better than the movie) they're both incredibly good for completely different reasons one has a compelling serious in-depth mythology storyline, whereas the other one is hilarious, though if they ever make those games, I'm sure I'd be thoroughly dissapointed as is always the case.

Also Neuromancer would probably make a great game, unfortunately I can't remember the plot really, just that it was good (awesome title too)
Hitchhiker's Guide has been made into a tremendously difficult adventure game written by Adams. Neuromancer was also made into a game but I don't believe it followed the book much.
I know about both adventure games, but as you said, the neuromancer one was rather unconnected and the hitchhiker's guide adventure game is a bit dated, I'd like a thematic RPG for all three books, but prefereably not one that actually follows the main characters, so that there would be some creativity in the storyline and some original and interesting gameplay

To disagree with Matthew Reilly point, He's a brilliant action author, for sure. Won't disagree in the least. However I feel his books were very linear-Making them into a game would end up with another straightforward shoot-em-up. Cod4 for instance, Where nobody really understands the story but just straight out loves to shoot shit. Know what I mean>?

That's fair enough, to be honest the same could be said for a great deal of books, perhaps it should be a topic about making games based on a book/series. Not to mention I'd prefer a game about the Seven Ancient Wonders/Six Sacred Stones storyline anyway. Dodging traps and the use of wit almost exclusively over firearms, it could also involve puzzles you have to solve to research the locations of artifacts.

Still, as others have said, its very rare that the movie -> game thing works, I wouldn't hold too high hopes for a book -> game adaptation.
If Contest ever does get the movie adaptation that its sposed to though, we can expect a Contest the book the movie the game, good lord don't let them ruin it.

Alice in Wonderland.

I haven't read it, it just seems like the sort of thing that could be really interesting as a game.
I give you "American McGee's Alice"

Seriously cool game, and a sequel is in the pipeline, so hooray!

edit, sorry Geek! :(

@FletchTalon::What did you think of Chronicles of Athena/The other Vin Diesal game? (I havn't played them-Not a console fanboy :p)
Otherwise the only book-->Game that I can think of (The Witcher) was actually a great success! Especially with the latest release of the game improving the dialogue, graphics and a number of other elements with the game. I played the original- Still think very highly of it. People slag on it for having the softcore porn cards...That's fair enough. That *is* a mediocre element of the game. As well as the combat being uh....repeditive to say the least. The story wasn't half arsed though!!!

How about 'I am legend'? Offensive guns blazing levels as you hunt for the vampires during the daytime followed by defensive levels as they attack your house at night. Maybe add a few repair your defensive positions and scavenge for supplies mechanics to add depth.
