I WOULD say a book, but as we learn from film and game cross overs, THEY DON'T WORK. I am too afraid my favorite books would be burnt before my eyes. keep them seperate please!
True enough, but don't you ever just wonder how a book you like would be played as a game? What ever book you say, is most likely not going to be made. It's just how you would like a certain book to be played if it were a game.
Hell, I would be happy with just a free roam world from the books I mentioned, just to see them.
Although I understand your opinion, I believe that as two very seperate mediums, they are almost impossible to fuse together in a coherent way. If you are ging to be cmpletely faithful to a book in the adaptation process, the game would lack a certain entertainment quality, and if you made changes, The game may become too contrasted to the book. Then there is the problem of subjective interpretation. Someone will always be left unsatisfied.

Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger books could make a good game setting as well. Also Dennis R. McKiernan's Mithgar books. Come to think of it David eddings books as well.

Dunno if this would count, but I would like Christie Golden to take over World of Warcraft's lore team.

She might actually salvage the story.

All the books by David Gemmell. One problem would be that since all the characters are so awesome, the difficulty would either be stuck at insanely hard or insanely easy
It would be awesome to play as Tenaka. (I have only read the two first books)
Yes. Same for Druss, Waylander or Culain

I advise you read more, so you know what I'm talking about =P

Forever war by Haldeman.

Like tribes with a lot of novel fighting concepts.

Instead of a range of weapons, you'd select from a range of laser setting on one arm, thick blasts, maintained beams and rapid shots.
Grenade launcher on the other arm, estimating distance and explosive charge strength.
Gun turrets which automatically fire on any thing that moves, you hold a button (deadman's switch) down to stop them from firing and release it fire, you role is to keep them from over heating or killing friendlies.

Fighting suits (power armour) that amplifys strength and speed. But the level are of varying deadliness, almost absolute zero blocks of hydrogen that explode if you touch fall on them. Slippery pools of frozen helium that cause you to skate around and varying gravity , for example on some levels you might be able to level the planet's gravity by jumping too far.

The stasis fields you enter where nothing can go faster then 17m's a second (your suits are insulated to prevent you freezing instantly) and you have to use swords, shields, spears and slow throwing weapons. You can't see inside or outside of the dome, so someone can be outside saturating the dome with laser fire, or hiding inside with a diamond tipped lead weighted arrow knocked on a bow.

Alice in Wonderland.

I haven't read it, it just seems like the sort of thing that could be really interesting as a game.
See Amercian McGee's alice. It isn't really like the book but it is (fucking) awesome.

the assassin and fool books by robin hobb
The court intrigues, assasin's missions and opens battles would be a good balanced. Also Fitz's gap between the two trilogies could be interesting, make something more out of his trip to bingtown.

Hmmm, Robert hienlein's Glory Road would be quite interesting, however the City watch series by terry pratchett would be equally interesting if you managed to pull it off.
In realtion to sceince fiction, anne mcathy's Planet Pirate seiries would work to some degree if you were able to pull off a balance between story and action although with the avent of augmented reality systems that are afforable ( less than the 2000 pound ones currently on sale, possibly between 700 and 300 dollars) the scope for first person games will open up for multiple generes including a mix of RTS-RPG-FPS-freelancer. Of course it all depends on the balance, if you wish to use the same universe or setting as a book or if you wish to actually attempt to effect a complete reenaction of the events entailed within the text. Space cadet also by robert heinlien would be a okay single player game while the crystal singer universe also by mcathy would provide interesting grounds for a Masssively multiplayer online game. However i think that Both the Old Kingdom Series by garth nix, which involves quite a few things that would be cool and make for an interesting combat system with plenty of opportunities for slicing up undead with sword, bells(Necromancers use instruments to raise the dead, primarily seven bells each dedicaded to a single function; protagonists send the dead back to death using the same instruments) and symbol based magic. I'd suspect any spell system would allow you as long as you knew the right symbols or charter marks and chose them in the right order and bound together with the right master, to use any level of magic; however if it is consistent with the book, then you are going to incapacitate yourself if you try to cast a spell of near ultimate destruction on day one. I also predict you would retain the ability to cast any spell sequences you have previously made in an instant possibly hotkey bound. The seven towers series also by garth nix would work as a single player but also as a online RPG, Within it the focus would be retained with chrachters gaining the ability to use different levels of light magic, that is a form of light manipulation using light generated from 'Sunstones' in vairous intensities and colours to genreate effects.
There are many many more possible choices than this, even possibly the old books of the faraway tree series; where the charachters went up a tree so high that the top could touch different worlds which changed from time to time.

The bible. That would be insane. You could play as Jesus, Moses, Joseph or even God himself. It would certainly appeal to mature gamers as it is the bloodiest book ever written. This book was made for a video game adaptation. Make this game!

And Gotrek and Felix too. Slaying hordes of every type of enemy would be an endless stream of happy moments.
