Meh, I have Fallout 3 (for all three systems! Whee!). I love Fallout 3. Between my nine characters I've got something in the region of 400 hour's playtime. Without Mods. Because I don't need to see the Lone Wanderer naked or an irradiated wasteland covered in lush green trees.

I'm going to get Borderlands (Not for all three systems! Whee!). It looks like a lot of fun, but Gearbox have already stated that there's only the most basic semblance of a story which boils down to "Go there. Shoot these. Repeat."

Conclusion? No reason you can't have both. They're not the same game, and I'm fairly certain that Borderlands is going to feel completely different to Fallout 3. But meh, whatever, you've already decided that Borderlands is better...

Borderlands and Fallout 3 are barely anything alike oh, they both take place in some post-apocalypitic future? BFD - that's like saying Wolfenstein and Call of Duty are the same because they are both during WW2

Don't get me wrong tho Fall out 3 managed to suck out 40 hours of my life, and I beat everything in it. Every single thing. Including punching a behemoth to death with my bare fucking hands :D
I did the same thing with a neutral Chuck Norris look-a-like. But to be honest, I'm loving Borderlands. It might be because it has 4-player co-op, or even that you can respec your character, but its a solid game. Now, excuse me, I'm gonna go play it some more.

As is my usual behaviour around this time of year, I prepare a Christmas wishlist and hand it out to family members so they can get the shopping over and done with, sparing them the stress of the holiday rush. On this year's list, two game titles I put down were Borderlands and Fallout 3 GOTY Edition, both for the PS3.

However, a thought occured to me. If I get Borderlands, why bother getting Fallout 3?

I've played Fallout 3 before on my PC; I got pretty far with my initial character, but after I downloaded that damned patch, it started glitching the hell up (ironic, isn't it?) and became unplayable. I never got the DLC packs, although I watched playthroughs of them on Youtube. As a result, I've more or less gotten everything I can out of the game.

Furthermore, I feel that Fallout 3 has very, VERY low replayability. I started another character prior to the patch debacle, playing as Bad Karma instead of my initial Good Karma... despite slight variations in my character's behaviour, the game felt exactly the same. It doesn't help that the quests feel very, very limited. My initial character was at a point where I was desperately hunting for something to do. Maybe Oblivion seemed hella bigger with plenty to explore, loot, and buy; either way, Fallout 3 almost seemed... stripped.

Conversely, I look at Borderlands and see endless replayability potential. The four different characters/classes add a good deal of diversity, the gun generator virtually assures endless loot potential, the art style even manages to make wastelands look bright and alive. Oh, and it has vehicles... SWEET, GLORIOUS VEHICLES! I realize the trailer music is "No Heaven", but I refute that! VEHICLES!

Oh, and there's multiplayer.

Sorry, Fallout 3. Your VATS targeting system isn't compelling enough in the face of Borderlands...

Comments/opinions?
First off, Fallout has tons of replayability, though not in the moral choice, depending on your skills there is far, far more to the world than you could imagine, you just have to be insane (like me) to find it all, second, how do you know borderlands will be good, third, vehicles arn't exactly a good thing, go play mass effect and tell me if driving is fun, and finally, multiplayer isn't always a good thing, especially when they dont do it right (im thinking wolfenstein, oh no looks like everyone has reduced damage and increaded firepower, too bad you dont have the money for it)

Edit: Stop comparing fallout to borderlands, the only similarity is the wasteland setting

Borderlands is really the Diablo series with guns it's a heavy Action RPG but as the primary mechanic is FPS with a greater emphasis on player skill than behind the scenes number driven
story is linear with pre-defined characters (with diablo skill trees) and no dialoge choices again like Diablo.
I'm not really sure how Diablo is not "western."
Didn't say it wasn't, Western RPG is a genre rather than location typifiyed by fully createable characters and multipul dialogue trees whereas Diablo only really uses the stat and character progression rather than character development through a story, with a fast paced real time combat system
I am so very tired of people needing to label RPGs as either JRPG or WRPG... It's one genre people. I don't recall any other genre having such a distinction. Just because it's made in one place or another does not make it different. Now if you said: Classical RPG, Tactical RPG, Action RPG, this I'm okay with as they actually define the type of RPG within the genre. I've been playing RPGs for more than 20 years and this whole JRPG vs WRPG is very recent and annoying.
Whoa wait a minuet nothing about this thread or my post has anything to do with JRPG vs WRPG and in fact I did use the term action RPG to define the Diablo series

"Classical RPG, Tactical RPG, Action RPG,"

So I guess it isn't just one genre, WRPG and JRPG are two types of RPG both similar and disimilar to the other but since no one was even talking about such things (WRGP Vs JRPG) it's hardly relevent

These games do not need to be compared to each other. I've played both and they are both very different. They only share 2 things, a point of view and a general post appocolypic similarity, that is it.

Fallout is all about story, Borderlands is all about gameplay. Fallout is a pretty crappy FPS, Borderlands is a good one. Fallout is a pretty good RPG, Borderlands has little to no story.

They are both really good games, but have almost nothing in common, they do not need to be compared.

But, to OP, if you are played out with Fallout, get Borderlands, I am really enjoying it.

BOrdelands and fallout 3 are not the same.
Post apocalyptical Downtown Dc/Planet Pandora
Wasteland/Dessert
RPG/FPS

There is nothing similar to them.
Borderlands has more in common with Diablo 2 than with fallout 3
