Well, the kid's only 14. From a legal (and if i know my friends, realistic) standpoint, he is not mature enough to make the decision we deem correct. plus, he's under a lot of stress. Let's see: Stress + immaturity = Not the best course of action. I certainly don't support this action, but i certainly can see the line (in the loosest sense possible) of thought this kid took.

One needs to ask, why didnt he just pop the tyres with the knife?
You ever tried to knife a tire? The rubber on tires is thick and there are steel belts inside of it.

thats funny...
OT: i think the charge should be reduced. He was proably scared that if he let his mother drive like that she'd proably get in an accident.

I would put this into Pokemon terms, but I don't feel like it.

I agree with you and say that his heart was in the right place, he just didn't need to throw a knife at her.

Player Son uses "Knife Throw".

It's super effective!

I'm surprised he was able to throw a knife in the first place.

You can't just toss any old kitchen knife and expect it to hit point first, especially at someone running.
Maybe he just got frustrated, grabbed the nearest object and threw it at her.

Boy: [sub]("Idea forming...")[/sub]

I'm with you, OP. Heart in the right place, but wrong means to resolve the issue.
But still the most awesome!

Also, for all you saying throwing knives is hard, it really isn't, when I was 14 I could throw a machete at a palm tree from 20 metres and get it stuck in. Maybe its just because I'm Australian.

It could be he had little other choice. Stabbing her in the right place is guaranteed to not kill her, but if she got in an automobile drunk, she could have very easily killed a child, another motorist, or an entire family on the road even mere blocks from their house, before police would arrive to try to find the car and its license plate number.

You can't reason or rationalize with a drunk person, especially a self-centered one that wouldn't even listen if sober.

Stabbing is safer than bludgeoning or anesthetizing with drugs too, maybe next time he should get a tazer; but since he probably didn't have one, a shallow cut with a disinfected blade would certainly get across the point.
that is a good point, it's hard to tell if the kid was in the right or not, atleast without a profile on him.

welcome to the escapist by the way.

Imagine a world where cars dont open for people with certain levels of alchohol in their systems xD
You mean something to the same effect as a [a href='http://www.stopdwi.com/']breathalyzer ignition?[/a]

OT: Moar dataz, please. What was her actual BAC? Why did he have a knife? Was it a skill shot or dumb luck? I mean, if you throw a knife without skill, hell even with skill, it is quite a trick to get it to hit blade first; especially to get it to hit what you're aiming for blade first. Did he intend disable with the shot? Was he thinking at all? Violence from emotion is never a good idea.

All that aside: is it better to warn someone that they could hurt themselves or someone else, but they refuse, or guarantee that they do by chucking a knife at them?

His methods were questionable, but he probably saved her life, and the lives of some innocent bystanders.

Judging by your username, you seem to be the kind of guy that would appreciate something like that.

Lock him up and take her licence off her for a year and make her resit the driving test. Simple.
Agreed about the mom, but the boy is only 14 he can't get locked up. Maybe some community service. I think all he really needs is some counselling. Obviously he should have taken a different course of action, but he probably had no idea what that would be, panicked, and threw... well, a knife. But good intentions! (Sadly some of the biggest attrocities are commited with the "best intentions")
Like world war 2!
Hitler: Look, I know we're killing thousands of innocent lives but its for the greater good, I promise!

I've seen a lot of news articles like that. People who have the right idea, but use the wrong ways to achieve those means.

Honestly, the cops were a little harsh. The mom is fine and if the son allowed her to drive, she could have been in a much worse condition if she crashed and then some bystanders may have been hurt as well.

It's the lesser of two evils I guess.

heh don't judge too much, username is just a username.
To be more specific it's one of those usernames where you join a forum and think of something that sounds cool, two weeks later you regret it.

Hmm. Seems like a completely reasonable response to me. Sure, he could have hit, tackled, smacked her, or taken the keys away from her. But he wanted to send a fucking MESSAGE. And obviously a thrown knife to the back is the best solution.

Then again, it is Winnipeg. Weird shit goes down there all the time.
