I tried reading the first Eoin Colfer book, but it just seemed strange. Like someone had put on a Douglas Adams latex suit and was trying to imitate his voice... but it just became somewhat disturbing....

Tricky, my first instinct is Tolkien, but to be honest, he finished his "great epos" and, yes, I know he have a lot of unfinished stories, he didn't leave a gap in my mind. Also, while showing him the movies would be interesting, it's pretty clear from reading about him he wouldn't like it, so a pass on him.
Second instinct is Jordan, since he didn't get to finish his series, but he got him self a ghostwriter, and how much would really be different if he wrote it? No, if I only can choose one, he'll stay in the coffin too.
No, I'd go to the mainstream answer, Douglas Adams, he need to salvage his series after the fifth, I did not like that one at all, and we need to get him on the new Doctor Who staff.
But if we could preemptively save Pratchett, that would win i suspect.

I must admit I liked Eoin Colfers book more than the fifth one. He didn't write that one, his depression did.

There are a few problems with what you just said. I bolded and italicized them to help you out.

H.P. Lovecraft wasn't just a little racist like most people back then, he was very very racist and xenophobic, although saying his writing is bad because of that is stupid. The reason his writing is so interesting is because of the way he talks about things he doesn't understand, which is really just a huge metaphor for his xenophobia. He probably wouldn't fit so well in the modern day.
