So, a high percentage of people, mainly Americans (I'm not pointing fingers, it's just the higher percentage of people!) seem to think that "British" means "English". That may very well be true, but it doesn't just stop there. Being "British" means your part of Britain, or the UK. However, it can't be used in the sense that it's your nationality. It's a lable, yes. However, if I were to have "British" as my nationality, that would mean I'm Welsh, Scottish, English and partly Irish.

I'm just throwing this out there but, everyone gets that right? I hate to be a little elitist, but this is the Escapist, and it's built up of a mutli-diverse, but mainly intelligent group of people so I'm assuming the answer is yes.

But, just to be sure, and probally a bit patronizing, you all get that right?
Thats nice sweety, but then so many assume "American" is our nationality, I mean, we have so many types of people from America so you can'-*Bursts out laughing* Sorry, couldn't say that with a straight face. If you are from the old territories of Britian (Before you changed your fucking names for the 8 millioneth time! Are you just TRYING to make Geography for us yanks hard out of spite? >..<) but yeah, I am sorry to say, your nationality is decided by where you are born.

Yes, but there are also a lot of people of Germanic blood and ancestry spread out all through Eastern Europe and even Russia and Kazakhstan. Incidentally, this was one of the reasons Hitler was so intent in conquering them.

well and as england has no bussiness in northern Ireland whatsoever and this should still be fixed we can exclude that one and still call it great Britain :p

[small]Yeah I'm one of those kinda people [/small]
Was there any referendum to decide if N Ireland is part of the Britain or not? I don't think there was, but it seems like a rather rational thing to do. At any rate, my impression is that most N Irish are sick of the whole conflict and glad their is peace.

You could move to the Irish Republic if you want, that could be a compromise.

There are many different cultures in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Scottish have their own culture just as the welsh have theirs and the English have theirs. There is no such thing as a collective British cultute.

I have also noted many Americans comparing the states to the UK. There is a large difference. The different countries in the UK were at one time or another their own sovereign independant nations. This cannot be said of any state within the USA. Thus their sense of regional identity is not as strong as ours. Especially as the different states within the USA have not spent generations fighting each other.

And for the record, i am English.

Northern Ireland is park of the UK, not Britain
I think your better off checking your facts before becoming condescending.
That's a religious debate anyway, the hard facts essentially prove that Northern Ireland is a British region.

I fully empathize with this threads point but I think the source is probably from the sheer size of America in comparison.
I think your better off checking your facts before you come off all high and mighty.

Great Britain (England/Scotland/Wales is the worlds third most populated island island, Northern Ireland only comes into the equation when talking about 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Ha your ability to quote wikipedia is phenomenal, but that doesn't mean it's relevant. Did you actually READ it?

I'd be more annoyed if I was Indian or Pakistani or Bangladeshi and constantly being referred to as Asian. It's like when several complaints were made that there were no Asian Soccer players in the English Premier league, even though there are a few Russians, Koreans and Chinese players
Russia is partly European (I think, though I'm not sure, its the most densely populated part too) so that would be a dubious call. I can't think of any Chinese players in the EPL and only 1 Korean comes to mind. I've never heard anyone make the mistake of forgetting China or the Koreas are in Asia anyway, So struggle to see your point
It was on BBC radio a year or two ago, and some focus group or other said there were no Asian players in the EPL. at the time i counted about ten or twelve (including Russian, turkish and isreali players)
