I buy games that I'm excited for new, most games however, that I'm not sure are going to be good I will always buy them used. Spending money on a game, at new prices, your not sure your going to like, is just a waste of your money and time.

Already upon reading the title of this thread I don't like you... Word of advice, try not to sound so bloody on the assault when you make a thread title, you'll make more friends that way.
As per your point, believe it or not some people do not have endless funds to buy everything new. That $7 reduction in price may seem laughably small but it still translates to $7 in my pocket and a game in my hand. Used games are not the devil, the developer still got the money for the game, and I paid (albeit through a middleman) a person to give me the game that they bought and they can do whatever they want with. Being a PC gamer, I don't often buy used, but typically when I do it is for a game that is hard to find new or a game that I frankly did not want to pay full price for, but I am willing to play the game at the used price. Frankly this is a still a winning situation for the developers, because since I wouldn't have payed full price for it anyway, then they are not losing a sale. What they are getting however is exposure. It's happened to me before, I've bought a game used, loved it, and immediately wanted to buy the game's sequel new when it came out. This translates out not to a loss of a sale, but rather a new customer.
Frankly good sir, before you start calling other people's actions stupid, consider why they are doing it and take a look at the bigger picture.

Why are video games the only industry that whines about this? Every year some new game gets massive news coverage for the money it's makes on opening weekend(halo3, modern warfare) then the next they are whining about used sales. You want to be taken seriously and considered art like movies, books and music? Then make sure as many people can see it as possible.

It is stupid, stupidly SMART!

Here we go again.

They DON'T charge $50 multiple times on a single copy, the sale several copies and if it was the case that a copy sold is traded-in again the it's one purchase for each sale.

I wouldn't buy a used copy if it was almost the price of a new copy but if it's half the price the i would definately go for it.

I like game shops in fact the used shops that i go to are all independently owned and I like supporting them, or as you put it 'making them richer.'

You do as you wish with your money and I'll do as I wish with mine.

Depends on where and what exactly is being bought. If you're the sort who buys it then just trades it in to a place like Gamestop then yeah that's stupid. If you're just going to play it once then get rid of it why not just rent it?

Didn't we cover this on an episode of Extra Credits already? Then there was that video that Movie Bob did over at Game Trailers.

Not to get off topic, but sometimes I wonder if the San Fernando Valley is the only place left that has independent game stores (well that and the San Gabriel Valley).

Is it really worth buying a used copy of la noire, deus ex or resistance 3 for 53$? Remember that not a single penny goes to the developers and you're only making gamestop richer.
did you get beat up outside a gamestop by their ceo one lonely night while you were a kid?

did your mother teach you that second hand stores are only for the feeble minded and mentally ill?

or are you just a republican? haa i kid i kid

but seriously... how is gamestop bad? sure they're the most corporate of game stores that sell used games... but they arent wal mart...

so i guess in short... what the hell man?

Here's the problem though, we have to buy from some sort of retailer one way or another and all of the retailers that are out there have a used game market. When the developer starts selling the games directly, then I might agree with the post, but until that time...who cares. The economy world wide sucks partially due to the fact that currency circulation is down. At the same time, the job market and minimum wage suck. It's a catch-22. If I can buy a used game for 5-10 bucks cheaper than buying it new great, unless it has online pass...don't get me started. The argument of supporting the devs only holds up if the market was competetive with the devs selling directly and had to do so against a used game market. They don't.

Where are you buying used games for $50? I thought the whole point of buying used was that you could get it at a lower price

It sounds like your main issue is with Gamestop which is perfectly fine by me. Used game sales have been the sole reason I've been able to revive my N64, Xbox, Gamecube and, SNES collections. Used game sales are the reason I'm going to be starting a Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc collection too. Not with gamestop obviously but through a mix of amazon, e-bay (if I can figure the bastard out) and, independent retailers.

I see what you're saying though. I've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever to hit $20 or less and Amazon currently has it for $18 whereas most physical stores won't have it for less than $25 or $30.

Of course when I buy used games from yesteryear, the companies who made those games don't get any money but I'm supporting a local business so there's that.

I usually wait until they have a "Buy 2 Used Game, Get 1 Used Game Free" offer and by that time, the games are usually half off. Also, I don't have a lot of time to play games, so unless it is a title that I am really excited for, I'll buy it on release day. If I buy it later, I would buy it new, because I'd rather get a brand new title for a couple bucks more.

From the dev's standpoint, buying used games is only slightly better than piracy. No arguing about it.

Why slightly? Because chances are pretty good that the money gotten from selling a used game will be going towards buying a new game. However, it's not a guarantee, and it's even less of a chance that the money from selling the square game will go into another square game.

So if You're buying used, You're basically pirating it. The fact that one thing is legal and the other is not does not matter much; it's about whether it's legit or not. The fact that You "support Your retailer" doesn't matter much; You could just as easily argue someone who buys pirated games (as those used to be sold in the olden days...) supports his local pirates. After all, they have to eat, too. No merit in that one. Edit: Again, from the developer's standpoint.

If You buy used because You can't afford new, You really might as well download it. In the end, it's probably BETTER for the industry if You download 3 games and buy one new for $60 instead of buying 4 used for $15 each.

Live with it, or stop doing it.

Thing is. I bought Deus Ex for a quid from my local game shop and I haven't looked back. I will admit that trading in games that you like is a bad idea, so I never do it, but trading in useless games is much better, cos you get money to buy better ones. Also, where else am I going to get a decent copy of Phantasy Star Online Ep 3 CARD Revolution for cheap? Used of course.

This just in: Libraries just as bad as piracy for the book industry.

Really, get off your high horse on this one. Ever heard of the "First Sale Doctrine". It's consumer rights to pass along a legally acquired item. That's right: this sort of thing is protected under legal and moral guidelines to protect consumers from big companies. If consumer rights are bad for the industry, then so be it.

Not sure if troll... or just dumb.

Used games are never sold at the original price. The simple logic being that if they are both relatively the same price, most customers will buy the new one rather then bothering with the used one. The strongest argument for used is when the price of a 50 game gets knocked down to about 10 bucks. That's a good deal. As for developers... Yeah they got paid when the store that originally sold the game order the game... so...

I hate buying used games, esp. now in the age of saved games and what not. There's just something, I don't know I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about buying a game new. It's like buying games used makes them somewhat less mine.
And then there's the issue of saved games. On most CD based games this isn't an issue, but I just started playing Phantasy Star Zero the other day and my copy is a used copy, I didn't buy it I got it for Christmas from my sister, but I assume the used copy was the only copy the store had or seeing how it was obviously GameStop/EB Games, that's probably what they told her.
Anyway, natuarally being used it had some saved games already on it, being for the DS and all, so I went ahead and deleted them and started up my own. Then later on I went to a place in-game for character records and it gave me a bunch in in-game achievements and shit that I couldn't have possibly achieved yet. Presumably it was taking into account stuff from the game's previous owner. I figured this stuff would be per character or at least per DS profile, but apparently not. What really irritates me is that there is no way to reset this. There is no way to erase the progress of the previous owner and track strictly my own.
