I recently reread my old Calvin and Hobbes books. It is a very humorous strip, but something stood out to me that I never would have noticed when I read it in my youth. Somehow, that comic perfectly captured what it is like to be a child. I was unlike Calvin in almost every way, yet when I read strip I remember doing many things that he did. I remember seeing the world the way he did, mainly in this strip;

Actually, this was the final Calvin and Hobbes strip:

I loved Calvin and Hobbes.
I used to see the world like that. When life was still unknown, and even the simplest things could fascinate me.

I hope I don't forget what it was like to be that young.
And really, it's the perfect way to frame Calvin & Hobbes. It's an exploration of the fascination and imagination that comprises a little kid's world.

OT: I always wonder what an animated TV series or such would be like, but in the end, I'm glad he refrained from commercializing it. As it stands, it's pure, unadulterated art.

One thing I am curious though, why does every one of these drawing make Calvin have a Daughter?
A quote from Watterson in the Tenth Anniversary collection: "I sometimes imagine a strip from Susie's point of view would be interesting, and after so many strips about boys, I think a strip about a little girl, drawn by a woman, could be great."

Because I've read that book a million times I'd probably make Calvin's child a daughter, too.

Well, that and the "karma's a *****" thing.

Let me start by saying I don't usually read or write fanfiction. I was directed to this [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2048837/1/Reminiscence] story by a friend of mine who knows how much I love Calvin and Hobbes. It's kind of sappy, yeah, but really, I think it's a great "goodbye" piece to the series, and to me, it's probably always going to be what really happened. The picture in the OP reminded me of it.

Karma. After torturing Susie Derkins for his childhood, of course the gods are going to give him a little girl who will get tortured in her turn by some future version of Calvin (perfect irony if it's Susie's son.)
Bah...he did it better then me. : )
Clearly, Calvin married Susie. That would be the obvious result of their relationship.

I am sadface that I never got to read it when I was a child. I'd still love to, and I still feel the same emotion when I see the picture, because I used to take my stuffed animals everywhere with me and we'd go on all kinds of adventures, but then I had to grow up...
Shit, now I'm almost in tears :(

In the same vein, Toy Story 3 left me heartbroken :'(

I can't really imagine much of a 'good future', if I look at it objectively.
What if Calvin finally gets diagnosed with a severe hallucinogenic mental disorder?
That seems the most likely scenario, going by his trips into imagination land.
I mean, sure, we've all had our imaginations run wild when we were young, but Calvin is on an entirely different scale.
He'd realize just how deluded and simply fake his entire childhood has been.
I think he'd go into a severe depression and eventually resort to drugs to make reality go away to regain his childhood ignorance and bliss.
Or maybe he's too far gone to even be conscious of his immediate surrounding that doesn't comply with his deranged mind by that point.

Good times, good times.

Even though I didn't have a perfect childhood, there was always something to cheer me up. Always a way for an escape. I would lose myself in my own imagination. Just trying to enjoy every second of my youth.

Oh shit.........*sniff*

Thank you, Bill Watterson.

I probably wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't for your comics.

*cries*

I was Calvin growing up. Calvin's "problem" was he had ADHD/ADD. That's all. Clearly you have no experience with such and are speaking from ignorance. Ah well. To each their own.

You better post the second part to that, it showed up in different thread here not to long ago.

I love the comic and the OP's post was just beautiful. Thank you.

When I was growing up, this was my fav comic hands down. I remember constantly asking my aunt to lend me her copies of books she hand on Calvin and Hobbes. This art work is wonderful.

Ah, now that brings back memories. From the Snowman House of Horrors, to Space Man Spiff's many space battles, to Tracer Bullet's brooding P.I. office, they made my childhood.

I bow before you, masters of the lazy Sunday. Hats off to you, Calvin, Hobbes, and Bill W. Hats off to you.

That was very moving, I love Calvin and Hobbes and it's nice to see an artist making an ideal end piece for my childhood nostalgia.
