Can we give the new Call of Duty a chance?

I've played every Call of Duty game since CoD2 (and seriously got into the multi-player at 4).

I have always greatly enjoyed the games. Even the "bad ones", I've enjoyed. The games have all given me what I've wanted; a good(ish) single player campaign and a fun multi-player game with my friends.

And then Ghost happened.

Holy balls. I don't know if it was just a slow build-up or if Ghost was that bad but that game left such a bad taste in my mouth. The single-player was bad, the multi-player was worse, and it came very close to me giving up on the series.

I have bought Advanced Warfare (currently installing). However, this wasn't a gimme as it has been in the past. For one, I got it for about $25 due to all the stacking of deals I did with Best Buy (I would NOT have bought it at $60). Also, this is the first year that I did NOT get the map pack with it.

Basically, this is the first year that I've ever not gone in expecting to be happy with the game. As a long-time fan, Call of Duty has been on thin ice for a while and Ghost cannon balled right through that. Getting this one cheap was the only saving grace it got and if this one falls on its face as badly as Ghost did, there's a very good chance that I'm done with this series.

As with all cods, whether I like it or not depends on whether the zombie mode is good.
Except MW2. Which is still the only cod game that was worth playing without zombies.

I don't really follow games before release much though so I don't even know if zombies will be in at all.

if i wanted to spend $60 on a game, i would buy Wolfenstein: The New Order again. Wolfenstein is how you do a modern FPS and make it really fun.

And I doubt they care.
You've got to work out by now that they don't care about the quality of their games, people will buy them regardless, so they just keep making the same replicate over and over.
It's going to be exactly the same as the one before.

Played it for about half an hour at a friends house and it is different. There is a big focus on mobility, rather than licking a wall to regen your health. That alone is a huge step away from conventional COD

I've still got a soft spot in my heart of CoD, considering I've played the series from the first game until BLOPS II(I might play GHOSTS if someone pays me enough).

I'm open buying a GOOD CoD game. If Advanced Warfare ends up being good, I'll pick it up. If it's really good(as in, the best COD since 4), I won't wait for a steam sale.

But I'm more then prepare to skip it as well.

Either way. It looks like it could be pretty neat, but I have very little interest in multi-player and even less so in competitive multi-player, so all of my thoughts about maybe checking it out for the campaign went out the window when I discovered that it takes up ~50 GB of hard drive space on the PC. Don't care enough to spend more time downloading the thing than I would playing it.

My old school sensibilities prevents me from taking Call of Duty seriously in any way. It's a below average series driven by marketing and cult of personality instead of any kind of quality experience. Will I play it if someone else is and invites me to it? Maybe. Will I buy it for myself? Fuck no.

Hating on Call of Duty is just an internet thing. The game series itself has never actually been bad. I'm not a big FPS player myself and so my involvement with the franchise is that I buy the games years after release on a significant price drop and then have a blast with the single player campaigns.

All told...it's a franchise that delivers a very familiar experience with each entry. No different than say Zelda, Mario, Madden, WWE, Command & Conquer, Arkham games, etc. In other words...its a game you don't need to learn. You can pretty much jump right in and be a master of the mechanics because of your experience with a previous entry. You have a good idea of what the general story will be so it's just about the experience.

Personally...I'm not even remotely hyped about this entry in the series. In fact, I paid so little attention to it that I wasn't aware of it's existence until I saw it pop-up on the steam pre-order page. Despite having zero hype or immediate interest in the game I could easily see myself owning it in about 3 years (they take forever to significantly price drop).

So yes, I'll give the game a chance. I'm just in no hurry.

No.
It's a mixture of Battlefield 4 (battlepack type rewards), Titanfall (the double jump and mechs) and recycling the same old CoD stuff with some new and some futuristic weapons and maps.

I bought it with the full intention to return it for full price in a week to tide my friends and myself over until Halo's released.

I'll give it a shot when it's cheaper, around £20 or so. From what I've seen, AW seems to be pretty much Titanfall, with less mechs, more story and a better unlock system in MP.

I haven't played it, but I will say people are being unfair about the whole 'press X to pay respects' thing. Nobody was complaining when Arkham City did it, and it's still not as bad as 'press X to Jason'.

Well, are people complaining specifically that you press a context sensitive button to pay respects or is it something else about how that context sensitive button scene works? I don't know the details.

There's a funeral being held in honour of one of your squad mates (who committed suicide by explosion (his arm was stuck) to destroy an enemy vehicle). At the end of the scene (which is about 20 seconds), you need to hold X to turn and place your hand on the coffin (the prompt is "Hold X to Pay Respects"). You then turn and walk away. Some stuff happens then which isn't relevant.
It feels a little silly, but it's nothing to really dwell on.

Already got it and rather enjoying it. Although that being said I somehow enjoyed Ghosts as well and that seems to be hated by almost everyone.

On a side note, I did not really enjoy any Call of Duty after 4. Just keep playing them cause friends were. Ghosts was the first one in a long time that I actually played without needing to have friends online.

But back on topic: I like what Sledgehammer has done, taken Call of Duty and given it a little injection of Unreal Tournament.

Why?

It's a media product with mass appeal. It has a budget likely in the tens to hundreds of millions. It's being developed by numerous studios and is backed by a publisher with far reaching influence, money, and power.

I don't need to give it a damn thing. It needs to impress me, if it wants me to spend a dime on it.

Not quite as much as it was. A lot of analysts are saying the series has peaked. Still hugely popular, though.

True, but not all detractors are contrarians. Some people just genuinely don't like the series.

OT: I'm going to wait till I've had a chance to try it. I loved CoD, but I just got sick of it The campaigns got more and more stupid, and the multiplayer just felt worse with each iteration and I'm still pissed about them removing dedicated servers, that killed my clan. We used to have a great time, we had a nice bunch of regulars, we could kick and ban hackers as soon as they made themselves obvious (i.e. we'd spectate them and see them doing clearly dodgy shit. Wallhacks and aimbots were so bloody obvious). I'm not wasting more money on another CoD until I'm sure it's worth it and I'm not going to feel ripped off a few weeks down the line.
