I did think that, until I saw Cowboy Bebop when I was younger and thought... ...whoa.
It was like a kickass spaghetti western in space.

I think its just a matter of what people have seen. But even mainstream things like the Pixar films or the studio Ghibli works are a mix of things for kids and adults, so certainly not for one alone

Simpsons and the like gets watched pretty much all the time here, so that isn't a problem. I normally have to watch anime when no-one is around though, cause I usually get cries of boredom from my siblings, or without fail "it looks like pokemon" from the parents. Even when watching Elfin Lied. Freaking Elfin Lied.

I don't really know anyone who thinks this, but if I did, I'd probaly show them the anime film Akira, and see what they think afterwards.

Forget Japanese cartoons. "Ren and Stimpy" or half the stuff shown after hours on the Cartoon Network has been made in the US, and the material is crass and definitely not for young kids. It might be funny to the right people, but it's not shown alongside Dora the Explorer, and for a good reason.
I remember one episode they helped a ghost commit suicide.
Oh god...."Ren's Toothache"...that's not for kids, adults or ANYONE.
Uuuuueueruegheghhhhhhhuuuuh. Exactly right.

OT: My parents are that way. They get pissed whenever I watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

It's that same mentality that makes people dismiss FF9 as "the kiddie Final Fantasy" and that irks me.

Yeah, they're usually the types who'll let their kids watch something like (Insert excessively violent and/or sexual anime here) because they apparently don't see that the title is written in blood, and that there's a half naked woman on the back of the DVD box and are shocked that an R rated animated movie is not meant or kids.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
WOO cartoons, there is no reason to not like them as you get older, aside from being a pussy and thinking that other ppl wont like you for liking them

nope, not a one. Times have changes, the medium has grown up. I often find that some of the stories with the greatest emotional impact are in fact animated.

well of course they are only for kids.

Thats what I regularly tell my younger brother. Then we sit down and watch some more cartoons. Cartoons keep you young.

Clone High is a perfectly acceptable means of education for all ages.

And I will be watching that series again, and again, and again, until I get old and senile.

Case in point, Toy Story 3. I'm not ashamed to admit that it's the one movie that brought me the closest to tears.

I remeber when someone told me that once. All it took was one episode of Gantz to convince them otherwise.

I would show them Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
That cartoon is definatly 100% fun for all the family ;)
Its not a cartoon its an anime.

Which brings me to my main point. I've met people with the mentality that anime is cartoon. It gets pretty annoying.

My sister is just like that. She says that something animated, cartoon or not, cannot be engaging or immersive. She didn't even shed a tear at Up or Toy story 3 because 'it's not real'. She's so stubborn that she refuses to listen to my arguments against.
