Which brings me to my main point. I've met people with the mentality that anime is cartoon. It gets pretty annoying.

Japanese don't make the distinction. Why should we? Anime is a loanword for animation after all.

My sister is just like that. She says that something animated, cartoon or not, cannot be engaging or immersive. She didn't even shed a tear at Up or Toy story 3 because 'it's not real'. She's so stubborn that she refuses to listen to my arguments against.

Use the live action film argument. If anything animation is more expressive than a human as they can be manipulated much better than an actor could.

Oh dear heavens, I know exactly what you mean. I love my father, but he is so old-fashioned when it comes to games. Every time he sees me play something, he has a comment ready that goes something like: "You aren't in kindergarten anymore."

Animation is just a story-telling medium, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is synonymous with children's programming. The notion that they go hand-in-hand really bothers me because I love animated shows/movies, but they desperately lack mature content.

My mother says it all the time when Im watching Family guy, South park, American Dad etc.

She obviously doesnt hear the swearing and the strong moral issues some of the episodes represent.

I was in Suncoast, when a parent was looking for "Cartoons" for her kid, searching in the Hentai section. Obviously wasn't looking at the boxes very closely...

That would have been hilarious for five minutes before all mature (and I do mean mature, not necessarily erotic) cartoons were knee-jerkily banned for THE CHILDREEEEEN.

Yeah thats bullshit. there are plenty of examples of adult animation, and i'm not talking about anime porn. The most recent example i can think of is Avatar. I don't really get how the mentality of cartoons are for kids started. originally cartoon's were only seen in the theaters so it was mostly adults that were watching them and while we don't think about it today but looney toones was straight up for adults. Alot of the humor (for the time) was aimed purely at adults. Even today i see alot of cartoon's that are defantly too mature for kids.
