Characters that are a disgrace to gaming

Ok, first I'd like to say that I agree with the Master Chief/Gordan Freeman thing mentioned earlier. I don't hate Gordon, but I just HATED the fact that he doesn't mutter a single line ... EVER! I know the point is to make you feel like you're him, but I would like to say a few lines here and there like "Who the fuck are you, weird man with a briefcase?" or "Hello there old one legged friend that I am apparently close to but never really show it because I have the vocal range of a brick" or for me personally "Damn Alyx, you've got a fice ass" Now, all perverted joking aside, my most annoying/hated/despised characters would have to be:

ROSH FUCKING PENIS. I HATE THIS FUCKING ASSHOLE! The second I saw him I KNEW I was gonna regret sitting next to him ...

Well, I'll go ahead and say Duke Nukem. I know that it's satire and intentionally over-the-top, but he's still just about everything I hate about gaming protagonists. Though I do admit that I like the fact that he isn't as bland as a lot of heroes you come across.

Bloody Tidus. Not only was he superfluous to the plot and a complete waste of space, but he didn't even have the good grace to realise it!

Tidus at least had a purpose. Until he showed up and said "y'all be crazy", everyone was content to just keep doing what they were doing. Granted, he was ear-gratingly awful, but he had a purpose.

Y'know who is the worst?

Vaan. From FFXII. In addition to somehow looking worse than Tidus did, his only purpose was to get the story moving. After the first three hours of gameplay (maybe a bit longer if you count pettiness and contrived plot), his sole purpose is to tag along. He has no idea how anything works, makes no effort to intervene when characters make stupid decisions, and generally does nothing besides goof off.

Although, arguably Penelo is even worse than him. Her only purpose was to smack him upside the head to get him moving on getting the plot moving. After that, she has a contrived plot purpose for staying, but that gets resolved within the first chunk of the game! The rest of the game is her being the tagalong to the tagalong. I think she only has maybe six or seven lines of dialogue after that, and it's a very word heavy story.

Even all the way to the end, you get the feeling that they had so little to do with the story that they weren't supposed to be the main protagonists. Arguably, Ashe and Balthier would be the leads.

Sure, Tidus was pretentious. But at least a good deal of did require his intervention.

Did you even play 1-6? You know the series started before 7 right?

Yeah, I know there are 6 other games, but I was mocking all the ones that came after that had EXTREMELY unlikeable protagonists. I guess I shouldn't have said 'all', but whatever. I made a mistake on the internet and will therefore be crucified for it.

If Dissidia is any indicator, Cecil, Bartz, Warrior of Light, and Terra would all be bloody annoying as well.

The only real difference between emo leads like Cloud and Squall vs. Cecil or Terra is that one of their games came out on the new gen, and one didn't.

Trust me, Dissidia isn't the best indicator. I just played FF4 for the first time so I'll use Cecil for my comparison.

FF4 Cecil: I've just redeemed myself for my ONE sin, now it's time to save the world with my friends.

Dissidia Cecil: BROTHER! BROTHER! WAIT, BROTHER!

See the difference.

I'll admit he was a prick in 2, but in 1 he was an endearing relatable person who, in a split second and stroke of sudden fate became the sole person who could preserve and protect the entirety of humanity.

But yeah, I wanted to kick him in the balls in the second game.

I mean, he wasn't SO bad in the first game, because there were plenty of supporting characters and the voice acting and scripting was pretty damn good.

Nearly everything that over aggressive jackass does only serves to make things worse be it through nearly killing others, successful killing others, or making martyrs out of the enemy and directly disobeying orders while doing so, all while being dumber than a bag of pig based fertilizer!

And does he ever get punished for it? Placed on latrine duty? Shot or demoted for insubordination!? NO! They REWARD him! They PROMOTE him! They give their biggest idiot AUTHORITY! I was hoping Killzone 3 would have a Helghast mode just so I could finally shoot him, but nope.

Heck, given how much the creators seem to like him, that fictional Helghast mode would probably end with Rico killing the player character after everyone else was dealt with.

I agree with this, the only reputation this guy has going for him is what the fanboys give him; he's got nothing else to make him interesting.

Also Samus from metroid other m, it was interesting to see her talk but the moment she started I just wanted her to shut the hell up.

Also Salem and Rios from army of two, both were annoying.

Well the books go into more detail as to who exactly John is and what his motives are, but I see where you're coming from. If you go solely by the games then there's not much you can glean from him.

Rosh Penin from Jedi Academy gets my vote. It's like they took everything that was annoying about Anakin from the prequels and cranked it up to eleven. You can tell just by LOOKING at him that he's a whiny *****:

He is without doubt the WORST character ever written. Nothing is charming about him, nothing likable, he's just made to be PERFECT. And that is your problem. You don't make a realism game and throw in a perfect character. There needs to be flaws to make the character seem vulnerable or make the bad guys seem intimidating. Not only is he "perfect" but every time he opens his mouth I just want to beat him to death with a crow bar. Its like playing as Justin Beiber, made to look handsome, embarrass other people within the same category (singers), and very very annoying!
Just looking at him is embarrassing.

Emil form tales of symphionia: dawn of the new world. Sure, tales is my favorite series. Sure the first game is my favorite game ever. But Emil in the sequel made me want to scream he was so whiny and had potential. Also what the deal with Marta from that game? So much dissappointment.
