The funny thing is at first Darwin was actually a very religious man. He thought he was glimpsing part of Gods Divine Plan. He thought that evolution was part of how god created the world, not with magic but by creating a world that worked.

Then the church read his book and thought it would turn people away from the Bible. So they excommunicated his ass.

I have no qualm with religion, but it shouldn't be run like a business like most churches do.

That is stupid... but, then again, I think the people evolving from monkeys is about as ridiculous as everything there is in christianity...
Anyone who claims that this is the basis of evolution has as tenuous a grip on the subject as the person who wrote that first review. Let me spell this out for anyone who actually believes that this is the case.

Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Both species have a common ancestor, where selective pressure lead to the induction of different traits in different organisms. Humans are no more related to monkeys than I am to my 100th cousin twice removed.

I'm really starting to be bothered by the common use of the Christian scapegoat as an excuse to justify one's fears that a movie won't be successful. As people have said before, 39 percent is still a broader audience than some movies have and they still are successful. Could it possibly be that the film is considered not good enough for a release in the states because it didn't do well in Britain or wouldn't appeal to American audiences?

Secondly, I'm also sick and tired of people considering the states to be the fucking devil, stop it, we're not trust me. I mean we're not the super-messiah awesome country, but we're also not filled with inbred hicks that constantly spout misguided religious references to justify everything they do. There are some intelligent Americans who actually ENJOY living here and I am pretty sure I'm not the only one.

I didn't think it was that low!

Thats it. Thats the last straw. I've had it with America, I'm moving to England.
Hello my friend you wanna have some crumpets and maybe a cup of tea? After that we can play some soccer or cricket. Also look at our women, they are beautiful.

Have fun in England.

Ahhh, I love English women....

Less hate, more discussion.
eh not so much hate just a bunch of americans going "goddamn it" and a bunch of christians saying "well thats weird"
My apologies, after a while my mercy subroutines fail and I see only hate in all around me. In the sky, in my fridge, in my dog. I see only the hate of a black apocalypse and the singing rage of a million vengeful angels. I am consumed by the pounding heartbeat of the fury of a universe.

Also, this is pretty blatant thread derailment on my part. Don't reply to this. I'm issuing myself a warning. That will teach me.
STAY AWAY FROM THAT HOUSE!

No, the person who wrote that review linked Darwin to Hitler. Christians as a whole did not. Not trying to flame you or anything, but I am Christian myself, and while I certainly don't agree with all of Darwin's beliefs, I would never describe him in the way this reviewer did.
indeed i didn't mean to condem all christians there but its saddening to think that many are going to read that review and give it a thumbs up :(

In case any of you have problems with evolution or want to shut some creationists who try arguing science down, here is a nice site to look at - http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/list.html

It's weird that the US is missing out on something while Australia gets it. The first step in payback for all those banned games I suppose.

39% isn't enough of a possible audience?
I mean, come on, films like Watchmen don't have the broadest probable audience, either, and they're still successful.
Well, whatever. I'll watch it.
Also, controversy is good advertisement!
it sure is, but you have to remember who the film is up against. The westborough baptists would probably blow up a theater that dared play it, not to mention the damn crazy motherfuckers who will just protest wildly.

Most American people probably know so little about evolution they couldn't make a well informed decision one way or the other. And I'm not picking on Americans, as I think the same applies to just about any other nation.

Without the knowledge to make an informed decision, people will just believe whatever is easiest or most commonly espoused in their everyday cultural input, it's just in America the anti-evolution crowd shout a lot louder than elsewhere.

Someone else might have already said it but Im not arsed looking through all the posts.

Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated.

The Nazi propoganda folks once tried to make him seem like the second coming of Jesus.
He also believed in Galtonism, not Darwinism, and the scientific comunity never accepted Galtonism.
What he actually believed in was Social Darwinism, suggesting that in a society one group of people will always be on top, and others are just below them. For Hitler and the Nazis blonde haired blue eyed people were the fully evolved human beings, compared to the Jews who the Nazis believed to be scum and the lowest form of human life. So basically the Nazis read a good theory on how man has evolved, and then put their own sick twist on it.

Also people will see this movie even if it is banned. In the UK Life of Brian was banned in some areas but not others, so people just organised trips to go see it elsewhere. Banning films and things never really works anyway people will always manage to find a way to watch it.

Why not Canada?
It's not far enough, TO CHINA I SAY!

OT: I'm from UK and the way I see this is that its absolutely ludicrous, surely religion can't rule over scientific proof in someone's mind, maybe it's worse than I thought over there.

100% - 39% = 61%
Not 71%, it's definitely a math fail
