People didn't go there for sight-seeing already? I know that there's a bunch of radiation and shit, but it would seem like an interesting thing to do.

Tourist attraction? Like hell it is. You pay a fortune to get your own weapon, hazmat suit and anti-radiation drugs. Then you're dumped in the middle of the Zone and told to fight your way out through zombies and mutated animals. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. anyone?

That, I would pay for!

Somehow I don't think I'd be up for visiting a locale that's radioactive. I'm going to guess that this is a publicity move, and they're not actually opening it up four tourism.

And thats pretty much what I meant earlier. It's sad.
I wonder, how they would've liked shoveling radioactive material from the reactoor roof.

As far as I've heard, the dose is not enough to do any real harm. You'd need to be there for weeks to get something not so good going on because of it.
You mean like the people that work there?

Already been there in 2008 and most likely going back next year (and this time we have the green light to stop by GSC's headquarters to meet the team *g*).

And as far as radiation goes, honestly you get much more radiation when you fly by plane than there (as long as you avoid the patches of moss that have higher peaks).

I'm not sure what this "opening to the public" will have as effect however, maybe you will no longuer need approval from the military anymore I guess ? (which is already pretty much transparent as it's handled by the mandatory ukrainian contact)

900+ photos, if you're curious: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wildpeaks/collections/72157616378257481/
(and yes, next time, I won't use the fisheye lens as much...)

"Still "dangerous"" is only positive for the image. I'm sure many people would like to visit that place. Just think of the amount of apocalypse-threads on The Escapist...
They're not going to a real life dangerous area, they just like the idea of being the hero in a zombie apocalypse because they like the idea of being much greater than themselves and actually being able to do something.
Possibility of danger just adds interest and my side point was just a casual demonstration of the interest people have to apocalyptic scenarios and environment.

Working and living can be ten different things... if they go for just some hours a day, they won't eat too much of that crap. I'd bet it's even healthier this way, as they'll be doing extra to keep their health up - the body can deal with the rest, perhaps even better than before overall.
