How is it any different than parents forcing their kids into little league sports?
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. It's a little baffling seeing how intensely everyone in this thread is freaking out.
Ignoring the extreme parents who force their children to do a certain sport or they are failures (I hope they are few and far between) the psychology behind pageants is slightly different.
Most little league sports are team sports correct? (I'm from the UK, we dont have little league here) so you win as a team or lose as a team and theres the whole social and physical exercise aspect of it all. It doesnt focus solely on winning and losing, hopefully good sportsmanship is taught and the children just enjoy taking part.
However with pageants many mothers impress on their daughter that winning is all and beauty is all, to the point these girls base their entire self esteem on these pageants, which are actually ALL about winning or losing. Imagine a girl who's been told shes beautiful her whole life and that its the only thing that matters, she enters one of these pageants only to find out that some other girl is more beautiful and unlike sports where you can make yourself fitter and more skilled, you can't (or at least with difficulty) make yourself more attractive, you look the way you look.
I feel so sorry for these poor girls, in their childhood their mothers tell them beauty is all and in a few years when they're teenagers and women, the whole of society (media, films, adult beauty contests, potential boyfriends, fashion industry etc) is telling them the same thing, having their self confidence shattered so early and having no other persuits to make up for it will make life very difficult for them
