They're certainly an interesting country that's for sure. I'm very curious as to how the whole Google thing will play out. It's a bit scary to learn Microsoft is trying to fix IE6 as fast as they possibly can to prevent Chinese hackers from gaining entry through the loophole they exploited to hack the GMAIL accounts of Google executives. That kind of subterfuge is the sort of thing you only hear about in movies, not in real life. It just makes you wonder exactly what is going on in their government, other than the fact they're very much entrenched in power and are trying to stay that way. They're also much smarter than the Russians, so I expect they'll happily stay in power for quite some time yet. As long as relationships with them don't deteriorate internationally we shouldn't have much to worry about though.

I really don't think China will last much longer. The government is trying to keep it quiet, but protests, riots, etc. aren't too uncommon. Only a matter of time before the people snap.

Services over there are generally ok, everything's cheap, and the food's not bad if you're not worried about piss poor hygiene practice. Going to a huge internet cafe and playing some games on high performance comps for only 3GBP (6USD) for the whole day, not too shabby...

As much as people like to rage against China's government, as little as a century ago, and even as little as 40-50 years ago, most western nations were just as authoritarian and in some places in the west are still dictatorial socially (if not legally).
Remember China is a young country, which was stabilized by Communism. Remember what happened when Russia abandoned Communism? Yay were free! Except for the mobsters. And the mass (40%) unemployment, and the loss of health services. Well at least we can eat, if it wasn't for the rampant inflation and so on an so on.
