I've been living in Shanghai, China for over four years now, albeit I haven't experienced the rest of it, or the stark contrast that is the undeveloped countryside, but I still feel I have somewhat of an understanding as to what China is like.
What I hate is the censorship and restrictions on the internet: Google, Facebook, Twitter, Newgrounds, IMDB, parts of wikipedia... the list goes on. It seriously hampers your anti-social life.
What I find a little amusing, is how many Americans view China and the Chinese. A lot of it is in a negative light. I can only hazard a guess that such opinions are derived from media, movies and word-of-mouth, probably not from personal experience.
I'm British, so I'm not too sure about this, but here is my guess... is it because America fears China? I think we all know why. Growing global power, huge debts, etc, etc. American seems to be doing a lot to pull China's face through the dirt, as are its citizens:
- Constantly bringing up China's dark past- (you'll be surprised how many Chinese actually know of the horrible things that have happened here, they are not ignorant.)
- Constantly mocking China's products- before, there was never even a single comment about things made in China (probably 99.9999% of all products are manufactured in China hehe), but all of a sudden, there is media attention to everything made in China. Even movies are mocking China's goods. If you can recall the scene in The Dark Knight, where in court, the failed assassination attempt by a gun made in China is thwarted due to it being faulty "next time, buy American".
- Constantly bashing Communism- you need to experience it yourself before you truly understand it. In the cities you cannot feel it, it's the countryside folk that get the brunt of it. This is the safest I have ever, ever felt in my life. I could expand upon this, but i'd set myself up for arguement.
- Constantly bringing up human rights- Meh... human rights is overrated.. but don't quote me on that haha. I'm sure western countries are having problems with the complete opposite. Ever get the feeling your society is too politically correct? Ever hear the story of the Thief that sued the old woman, because she stabbed him with her umbrella as she defended herself? Ever recoil in horror as your children must sing "baa baa rainbow sheep" because "baa baa black sheep" is deemed racist? How about at Christmas.. I heard it was called "winter holidays" now.. wouldn't want to offend those minorities. Bring political correctness over here and prepare to get laughed at.
Now here is the irony: you ready for it? Chinese people ADORE Americans. Seriously guys, the common Chinese person is in LOVE with you. They worship your rights, they worship your freedom, they worship your personalities, your looks, your skin, fashion, everything!
Since I have been over here, I never hear anything negative about America. It's just praise, praise, praise. (O.K.. the odd comment about being power-hungry and war-mongering, does occasionaly slip out). My point is, I get a little offended and take it personally when I hear all this China-bashing stuff. To be honest, you need to experience it first hand as several of the posters here have.
