Meh. Citizen Kane and Vertigo both aren't that great to me. Sound, sure, but great? I'm filled with an unimpressed mind on this one. Of course, my tastes are a lot different than what a film critic's are.

upon reading this my instant reaction was "well that guys clearly 12" and moved on to read other replies. it wasn't to start ripping on the guy for an (albeit fucking stupid) opinion. leave off guys :p

One second, you're an AMURICAN. That makes Pearl Harbour your favourite movie and your idol is Michael Bay .... lol, can't even keep a straight face whilst writing this.
What do you mean? Michael Bay is the greatest thing to happen to movies ever. His clearly superior understanding of pacing, humor, character development, and spatial editing during action sequences are second to none, and who doesn't love the unnaturally orange skin of his actors? Pearl Harbor is a true American classic and a reverent reminder of what happened on that fateful day, and I wouldn't have it any other-

Oh god, I can't keep writing this post. It's a crime against humanity.

I haven't seen Citizen Kane or Vertigo yet (I'll have to), but the two of them make more sense to me than the IMDb list, which puts The Shawshank Redemption at the top. I'd have difficulty finding a film I liked more than V for Vendetta but if both films are good they could dethrone it in my eyes.

Dear god sir i hope you are joking..... or well, thats just very sad, sad indeed.
Yes, because personal opinions are always wrong if i don't like them. Why? BECAUSE OF REASONS!
Dude, chill, it is sad, it really is. Be less defensive.
You blatantly insulted someone for a differing opinion. One dick move deserves another.
Your definition of blatant insult is really extreme. Honestly it is really sad that you cant appreciate some of the greatest films of all time. On a side note, um, harden up son.
You said it "was sad" that the guy's favorite movie was TDKR. That's... pretty "blatant" to me. Not to mention, "great" is completely subjective. If someone came up to me and said that The Room was their favorite, I wouldn't care. Finally, don't just tell me to "harden up," you were being a jerk, and I called you on it.

Lol, It is sad that you cant watch any film that is black and white, and yeah it is sad that you honestly believe that dark knight rising is the greatest film of all time. It doesn't make me a jerk to call out your sadly lacking film experience.
Your going to have to accept that as we grow older people will challenge our opinions on the internet, sometimes sarcastically sometimes dismissively but it doesn't make them all jerks,
Wait... do you think my favorite movie is TDKR? Because it's not. And instead of just asking the guy why TDKR is his favorite movie, you called him "sad." There are ways to disagree with people without being mean! Finally, you ARE being a jerk. Why? You're touting your opinions as complete and utter fact, you're being completely unironic about it to.

You got hurt feelings bro?

First of all, I regard anyone who tries to tell me what the best of something subjective is, as being pretentious at best, and insulting at worst.
Ignoring that, however, I still don't agree with them. Personally, I think that Citizen Kane is a way better movie than Vertigo.

I would have to say Fight Club, even though you can't really watch it twice
Why is that?

Fight Club is one of the few movies I can think of that I can discover something new in, every time I watch it. There's an amazing amount of detail in that movie, and for that, I'd say it warrants quite a few viewings.
I have watched it several times but i have to say the first time you discover the secret (not spoiling it because people might have not yet seen it) you can't really get the oh my god moment where all the pieces fit together.

Both are great and classic movies. I don't have the knowledge and education to decide if one is technically better than the other though.
As for personal favourites, Blade Runner and Once Upon a Time in the West

I've had the ending spoiled for Citizen Kane so I moved it down on my to-watch list for the time being. I have yet to watch any Hitchcock movies though, so I better get 'em on the list.

Besides using numbered lists to possibly brand out and discovery new things, I don't like 'em too much. However, considering the types of people involved, the decade between votes and the sheer number of voters, I think I can take this list a little more seriously than most I've encountered.

You people and all your fancy old movies that you have actually seen.

The Blues Brothers is the greatest movie ever and I absolutley refuse to budge on this point, despite the fact that I hardly watch movies anyway. So there.

I dislike this notion of "best film ever." When you're dealing with a subjective medium, and one that's had a fair number of excellent submissions, it really becomes a matter of personal preference which one is really best, even if you force people to have quality standards as relates to editing, writing, cinematography, etc.
But I liked Citizen Kane. I preferred some of Welles' other films on a personal level, but Citizen Kane is an excellent film and it revolutionized the concept of film-making at the time. I haven't seen every movie that's ever come out since then, naturally, but I don't know that I've seen a movie that not only revolutionized film making that much, but was also an excellent film on its regular merits.
That said, no, I don't like to label films as "Best Movie Ever." I don't think you can really make an objective statement on that matter.

Psssh. Vertigo?
Everyone knows the greatest movie of all time is Trolls 2!

But seriously, even though it isn't pretentious enough to be the best film ever, Fight Club will always be my favorite movie, and I just broke two rules to tell you that.

I think Hitchcock in general ages better than some of the more ponderous movies from that time (like Citizen Kane). Me, if you told me to pick a classic from that time I'd go with Casablanca or the Maltese Falcon. Yes, I'm a Bogie fan. He was defining cool back when grandma and grandpa were still just holding hands.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could selectively wipe our memories so we could see the old films without fifty year old spoilers? I mean Psycho would be REALLY awesome if we didn't know that

I would actually cast my vote for Departures or Seven Samurai.

Truth be told, I was pretty bored by Citizen Kain. I think 12 Angry Men is a much better movie from that era. Or High & Low. Or really any film by Kurosawa beats out Citizen Kain, in my obviously ignorant opinion.

While a lot of people seem to find Citizen Kane boring, when I watched it I agreed with it being the best of all time. It is not my favorite movie by far, but it was just so damn ahead of its time.
