first off i dont know if this post has been done but ive got to let you all know that the sniper in tf2 is not a ruddy aussie seriously why would an australian say for queen and country?.

the slang that is used in australia is also used in the uk, wanker mate and so on besides i have never heard a australian with a cockney accent.

so please people stop saying this character is australian if you really want to know how it goes its like this :-
Heavy - russian/eastern europe
scout - brooklyn new york
Sniper - england
Spy - france
Demoman - scotland
engineer - southern usa
Medic - germany
Soldier - usa
Pyro - ummm well idk this one i doubt anyone does

anyway this should clear up that the sniper is not a aussie

Well, he is supposed to be australian. Its just that its an english voiceactor with a bad australian accent.
And i believe, that technicly, the queen of engalnd is also queen of australia, in a very seremonial way.

The queen is the head of state of Australia, hence why he says queen and country, also, he may be an British ex-pat which was common in the 50s, which would maybe explain the purposefully bad Australian accent.

And if the engineer were southern, he would have had a banjo. And a Southern accent.

There aren't many reasons to carry a Kukri around in England last time I checked. Nor wear a hat to keep out the sun or say "G'day".

*sigh* TF2 comes with developer commentaries (the 360 version does, at least) and in these commentaries, they mention that they chose a British guy to put on a bad Aussie accent for the sniper because they thought it was funny. And it is.

Because the Queen is the ruler of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. Although, the commonwealth is basically now just Australia but she's still sovereign there. He's voiced by an American by the way.

Sniper - Adelaide, Australia
Spy - France
Medic - Stuttgart, Germany
Scout - Boston, USA
Soldier - Midwest USA
Pyro - Mystery
Demoman - Ullapool, Scotland
Heavy - USSR
Engineer - Texas, USA

That's according to Valve. =]

Um, considering Valve has said the sniper is Australian, I'm almost positive you're wrong.

Valve set out to make all of the characters in TF2 completely unconvincing stereotypes. The sniper is played by a british voice actor faking an australian accent.

not to mention that several sniper achievements reference Australia, as do the spy achievements involving the sniper (Melbourne supremacy, Australian Rules, etc)

Yeah, the accents are purposefully bad. Like how the guy supposedly from Boston has a Brooklyn accent.
